Hi,
In GPL there are some corners that I mess up very frequently, especially
when I am doing a very fast lap...
1) Nouvelle chicane (Monaco)
2) Turn 8 (Mosport, the righthander after the hill)
3) Masta kink (Spa)
4) Flugplatz (Nrburgring)
5) The lefthander before Nouveau Monde hairpin at Rouen
6) Abbey (Silverstone)

GPL corners where players crash most
Han Monsees listed the GPL corners he crashed at most, and others shared their own, with the Monaco chicane, Mosport's crest and the Nurburgring prominent. Tips for the Monaco chicane and Mosport braking were offered. A side debate covered drivers who use the chase view instead of the cockpit.
Automated summary.

Good idea, here's mine:
1) That righthander after the dip at Watkins Glen
2) The bridge in the right sweeper right before the second karusell at the Ring
3) Before Nouveau Monde, Rouen
4) Lesmo 1
5) Parabolica
6) Curva Grande
Monza is a pain, tries to hard every time :)

6) Corner just after Flugplatz
5) Parabolica
4) Abbey
3) Most of Mosport, especially the r-h after the crest...
2) La Carriere
1) Bloody Malmedy. Ugh, ugh, UGH.
Yep, two corners from my favourite track as 1 and 2. Maybe that's why I
like Spa so much - there's a great feeling of satisfaction when I get round
a really fast lap without ending up in the hedge...

I'm sort of getting better at this now ... key (at least for me!) seems
to be get to right of track on approach and then look at the armco on
left and *ignore* the hay bales. Somehow by starting at the right of
track an aiming to just miss the end of the armco I'm much much better
than thinking about missing the hay bales!

1) lefthander after long straight at the Ring
I can take this one right 1 out of 3 times.. often I hit the
fence/bushes on the right side, very bad for the car..
2) lefthander at Mosport
(you know the one I'm talking about)
3) hairpin at Monaco
(loose lots of time there)
4) Parabolica at Monza.
Yesterday I drove a new pb of 1:27.75 at Monza, yet GPLDump
shows me that I lose more than half a second at the entrance of the
Parabolica. No matter what I try, I allways lose major time here..
5. hairpin at Rouen
(so difficult to judge speed there)
6. Last corner at Rouen
(also lose lots of time there, when I try to take it just a
little bit faster I allways lose the car there)

Yeah, it's 50% psychology and 50% setting up the approach properly after
the tunnel. The car can get loose when the track starts to slope
downwards, but if you keep right (possibly lifting a bit at the crest)
it's just a matter of nailing the throttle down and *pushing* it
through, not letting go until you have to brake for Tabac. Feels very
nice when you get it right.
More troublesome corners:
- the last left at Silverstone and the right before it
- T1 at the Ring (in races with >10 drivers)
- topi

Definately. I was told during practice for a league race last year
that I had to try the chicane flat out. After lifting a little bit to
settle the car over the crest, i floored it, almost closed my eyes and
pushed through it. Very satisfying, although, when I get it right the
adrenalie rush makes me forget to brake for Tabac :)

My choices would be:
1) Stavelot, Spa
2) Big Bend, Watkins Glen
3) Turn 1, Mexico City
4) Hondenvlak, Zandvoort (The quick left-right about halfway round)
5) Turn 2, Mosport
6) Hairpin, Rouen

I wouldn't know. I can't floor it before I'm about halfway down the hill, and
I have a 'confidence' lift in the middle...<g> I've never gotten it right at
full speed from the crest, and I have to lift after getting through it to get
control back.
I'm sure that would gain me a couple of seconds if I could DO it...

particularly troublesome...
1) Mexico (any turn) - although T1 guardrail has my firestones tattooed
all over it.
2) Mosport right turn after the crest of the hill
3) 'Ring - those blasted hedges halfway around the track
4) 'Ring - right turn downhill before the overhead bridge (Aremburg?)
5) Glen - The loop
6) Rouen - left + hairpin combo (IMHO GPL's toughest section to be fast
and in control)
Honorable mention: Mosport T2

Just "burp" the throttle to keep the rear of the car under you, look down
the straight towards Tabac and floor it. Don't even look at the armco or the
hay bales. Just like when approaching a pile-up, you'll hit what you're
looking at, so keep looking at the gap and you'll put the car there. Leap of
faith, but it works.
I now have different problem... I carry enough speed there to seriously
destabilize the car when it crashes down on it's soft suspension through the
compression, so I have to hold back for fear of losing it on the exit. If I
stiffen it up I start compromising other sections and I haven't found a
compromise I'm happy/faster with.

After two years of this chenanigans I have a pretty failsafe strategy for
most turns on most tracks... it's when I try pushing the envelope that
things start to go wrong. Maybe my "little bit faster" isn't "little"
enough.<g>

About half the turns at Nurburger.
Chicane Monaco (Not a race track, IMO)
"Leap of faith" fast left had jog at Solitude
La Carriere, Spa. Easy to blow if you're being pushed.
Although I seldom crash, I often goof up Malmedy, Spa. A quick way to
wreck a good lap.
Same story at Mexican Esses.

like making laps, it's the best place to "practice" flips.

The best part of that corner is that it provided me the very first GPL
scare in the demo over two years ago. I still remember that first
lap. Slowly out of the pits, easy up the esses, and then hammered the
throttle on the straight. WOW! And then that nasty corner turned up
mid air :D

It's very simple - as you go over the crest and into the dip, the car
"unweights" (rather like when skiing) and therefore you lose grip.
The trick at this corner is to lift off the brakes as you go over the crest,
then immediately (but smoothly) get back on the brakes, and trail-brake into
the corner.

1) T1, Mexico (90% of the time I wreck there)
2) T2, Mosport (Eh, 40% of the time there)
3) The right hander after the crest at Mosport (95% of the time!)
4) The corner right after the chicane at Monaco (always brake too late)
5) Parabolica at Monza (always seem to get out of shape or enter too deep)
6) The corner before the hairpin at Rouen
7) ALL of Rouen!

Like others have said, it's best to get your braking done before the
crest. I can usually start braking just after that sign on the left
disappears from view - the one Steve Smith mentions in his book - and
get it all done before the dip and then start to turn in as I go over
the crest and before I can even see the corner. However, you could
also try moving the brake balance a bit more towards the fronts for now
if this is giving you major problems. It may cause your fronts to lock
up a bit more often until you get used to it, but less chance of what's
happening at the moment.

Unfortunately, I think more and more users will be 'tailgunners.' As
the 2nd and 3rd generations of Nintendo and Playstation drivers graduate to
computers, they will bring the skills honed from years of driving behind the
car.
One of SCGT's most glaring weakness was the fact they had NO dash until very
late in development(thank the beta testers for getting one in.) It really
should be the CORE of a sim. All the feedback, the visual cues, the sounds,
are in the cockpit...not floating like a kite behind the car.
I'm pleased for you Dan that you can run so well using the arcade view. I
just have this very personal bias against that....not the folks who use
it...just I'm pretending to be a race driver...not a race kite...If I was 10
seconds faster in tailgunner mode I'd still give up that speed cuz when I'm
in the cockpit, I'm 'driving' the car. When I'm floating behind it, I'm
just moving it from side to side.

I'm faster that way. Being faster gives me a better chance of winning,
and the current top man in the business certainly supports the
attitude 'do anything to win'.
(I haven't yet sussed how to nudge opposition off the track without
damaging my own lap, though - that must be advanced stuff!).

That's about it for me also ;-)
I'm sorry but after two years of extensive GPL racing I simply can't master
that chicane if I had my life depending on it. 9 times out of 10 I will
pass the Monaco chicane without a problem, but there is still 10% left where
I just crash.
Still, I always said that the Monaco chicane is wrongly modeled in GPL. It
wasn't like that back in 67.
