Bremgarten add-on track for GPL released

Bruce Kennewell and others praised the newly released Bremgarten circuit for GPL as a frightening and beautiful track. Offline racers reported bizarre AI behaviour, including unnecessary pit stops and crawling starts, and GPLEA's Ed Solheim explained that no proper AI had been made in time for release. The Sabre Team was said to be working on improved AI, and some suggested hybrid engine swaps to mimic pre-war cars.

Really, you blokes have to stop this output of wonderful add-ons for GPL; Sierra want to put the thing to sleep and you just keep it going! Seriously..........another wonderful piece of artistry from the circuit specialists and definitely (in my humble opinion) the "scariest" track to drive fast. Can you even *begin* to imagine what is must have been like in a pre-war Auto Union or Mercedes? Pounding through the "green tunnel"? Shudder!!! A beautiful job. Take a bow, chaps; you certainly deserve it. Oh...before I go....just a minor thing that someone might be able to address further down the track (pun definitely intended!): the behaviour of the AI at the start seems a bit wonky. It's as if they're all on Valium until just after the first corner then they all get a charge of adrenaline and off they go! :-) Now....back to Switzerland.................................. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. ---------------------------

It's no wonder they couldn't race on it after 1955. All we need now is someone to make an Auto-Union or Mercedes car model. I don't know if it's possible or not given current GPL editing technology. With new sounds and a low-grip setting you wouldn't need to change much else to have what "Spirit of Speed 1937" should have been. - Michael

Bruce, The AIs are...well, *bizarre* doesn't begin to cover it. I 'staged' (but didn't participate in, so I could observe) an AI race, and can confirm yer observation: they get off to a crawling start, then seem to pick up the pace. Then it gets *really* wierd. In a 7-lap race, every car made one or more pit stops...but then RAN OUT OF GAS! Well, almost everybody. Scarfiotti won (!!!), and Parkes (!!!) was second. Both finished at about two mph. (Rindt led most of the way, with Gurney--who posted FL @ 2:23--second.) Every other car else stopped on the track and then winked out; simply vanished. I've never seen AIs make pit stops (I guess no one told them you can't make pit stops in GPL!) in a race; I can only imagine they thought they were in a P&Q session. Lovely track! I'm sure it will be a nightmare online. I can't wait to d/l Greger Huttu's Hot Lap, tho. --Steve Smith Bruce Kennewell <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Really, you blokes have to stop this output of wonderful add-ons for GPL; > Sierra want to put the thing to sleep and you just keep it going! > > Seriously..........another wonderful piece of artistry from the circuit > specialists and definitely (in my humble opinion) the "scariest" track to > drive fast. Mike, the reason that they couldn't race on after '55 wasn't because of the danger of *that* particular track, but due to the Swiss government's approach towards racing following the Le Mans disaster. Racing against a clock on a point-to-point track (hill climbing) was still okay but actually racing head-to-head on a circuit was illegal. I have to agree (and have pleaded before now) that a package including the cars from the other eras, the early 'tween war years, the 1950's and the early 1960's, would be brilliant. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- MichaelJP <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > > Absolutely! Well, sad to say that, as much as I like the circuit, unless the AI can be improved I'll just have to use it for sight-seeing, as it isn't really great for off-line racing as it stands. I confirm *your* observations too, Stephen, about the AI behaviour during a race. Only five out of the seventeen practised; Bandini took off like a scalded cat and was never seen again whilst the others all milled around behind me until they also disappeared from F2 replays. At the end of a 15-lap race it was Bandini first by about 3 light years and me second. Nobody else finished! Oh well. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Stephen Smith <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Xq096.83098$[email hidden]... > Bruce, > > The AIs are...well, *bizarre* doesn't begin to cover it. But strange things seem to happen... :-) I drove an AI race, full field. I qualified 13th, I won only those poor drivers who did not want to drive in qualifying... ;) In the race I was driving around 8th - I do not know, what happened to those behind me... (I have the rpy, I'll check later). In the beginning of the last lap ALL the drivers in front of decided to go to the pits! They came back to the track after quite short stop. And I won the race! :-) But there was no newspaper... :-( Anyhow, new experiences with GPL... ;-) Arto
This may be totally wrong, but could the AI cars being low on car be related to the fact that the default setup for the player has only four gallons in the tank? The default usually shows a full tank. Stephen Smith <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Xq096.83098$[email hidden]... > Bruce, > > The AIs are...well, *bizarre* doesn't begin to cover it. If you want to *somewhat* simulate the pre-war cars, use the Engine Manager and put an F1 engine in an F2 or F3 chassis. I did this and the car is unbelievably sensitive to power.

True - after all they were still racing on the Spa circuit! Probably wouldn't have lasted much past the early 70's though. Wasn't much of the circuit surfaced with cobble-stones? I'm not sure if that's represented in the GPL track. - Michael

Can you FF people notice anything different when driving on the cobbles? +Cinquo
Gents, To be fair to the Bremgarten development team, to AI's at their track is non-exsisting - for one reason; *I* couldn't find the time to make it - before they wanted to release the track. So if you experience weird behaviour etc. - you now know why. Ed_ The GPLEA "Stephen Smith" wrote:... > Bruce, > > The AIs are...well, *bizarre* doesn't begin to cover it. Yes you do get wheel spin, so it's important to apply power s-l-o-w-l-y. Also with the effect of narrower tyres on the trainers (I read this on Alison's site) the brakes are not as effective. If you think you are pretty good with the GPL F1 car you might find an F1 engine in an F2 or F3 chassis (I call them formulas FY and FZ) pretty enlightening. I am still crumby in the stock GPL F1 so it's doesn't matter which formula I run, it's just a matter of when and where, not if, I am going to spin off the track! -- Email: [email hidden] Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

F1 engine/F3 chassis might come close to replicating the traction of pre-war cars, but don't forget those flivvers were as tall as telephone booths, and the polar moment would put a 200-lb. bench press to shame! Not to mention the dodgy brakes and steering so wonky they probably had two inches of play at the rim of those 19-inch steering wheels. No wonder the cockpits were so capacious; drivers in that era had to have somewhere to put their b*lls! As Tim Nightingale said, "Every corner at Bremgarten is a great corner." Bring it on!
