Eldred- i have been reading this site for over a year now ,and just a month ago, finally went to your homepage. Great stuff. Great sense of humour. i have followed your plight, religiously(sp) and think i might have some good advise for you. first of all, i just put in my last laps so i could get a gplrank, 614 or something like that, but thats not important as the only track i've done more than 3 laps at is Monza. This is because i also play; SCGT, NHRA2, OF1R, F1WGP, F12000, VIPER, NASCAR3, and Mobil rally champ. I just started this video gaming and quickly realized after reading a couple of weeks of R.A.S. that GPL was going to require hours and hours of practice before having any reasonable skill. In other words, i fully expect my rank to go down quickly now that i have added the 30 extra tracks-textures-sounds and utilities that really make the game better than it came out of the box. Ok your a bowler, and a pretty good one from those averages. I myself try to bowl once or twice a year and can usually average 185 for 3 or 4 games.you need to use the skills that make you a good bowler, and translate them to GPL. What i mean is, you probaly know immediatly why a shot was missed. Too much wrist, not enough knee bend, and so on. How this translates to gpl is that you really need to identify why you went into the grass. theres only a couple of answers right? Did'nt brake early enough, or hard enough or missed the apex. Now when you get to this turn on the next lap you have to use the knowledge from previous lap and adjust accordingly just like moving over a spot or two in bowling. Brake a little earlier and a little harder and concentrate on not turning in at the same point you did the turn before. With this method of trial and error, you can be flying thru a difficult turn after about 5-10 laps. Also, i use the allison ferrari setups and dont touch them, and have found that you can take alot of corners much faster than it would seem. And tapping accelerator just before apex will do wonders in the right setup.to sum this up, dont make the same errors in the same turns all the time. try 10 laps and on each one do something different that should help get you thru the corner faster and with more speed. 9 times out of 10, if you drift the apex into the grass, chances are you missed the turn in. it was probaly a hair earlier. you cant be a good bowler and not have some athletic ability. be more confident while driving because it seems you enter most corners positive something will go wrong.Just a thought. I hope this helps you and if you've already tried all this-try again! lancemanyun P.S.- if you want maybe we could hookup some night and just run laps and if one of us spins the other will wait. no racing-just learning- and its more fun when there is always a car in front or behind you that you can see. let me know...
I can't speak on behalf of Eldred...BUT I don't think his problem is with consistency and trying to find brake points, but rather he is finding it tough to make the transition from turning the car to sliding the car through the corners. He wants to point and shoot like other games out on the market (SCGT) when he needs to be using some neutral throttle and letting the car slide through the corner. It is one of those things that is tough to learn/teach, it takes some self-discovery where once you feel it, you can normally do it again and then get more consistent with it...The problem is that before people make the jump from turning to sliding the car, they feel like there is no way to go faster and so they drive the same way and never get out of their rut... Just my quick note...nothing against you guys going out to drive together, but I think Eldred needs a different kind of breakthrough in his driving. Jesse Black

And is there any magic word that will suddenly make everything clear?<g> It sounds like a catch-22 though. You can't make the change in driving style until you feel it. Sometimes I know. Other times, I don't That's one of the tough things. I've had times where I'm sliding backwards towards the fence, thinking "WTF did the car do THAT for???" That's what took me out of the GP race at Silverstone. I crashed at Club corner without a CLUE about why. I crashed in the same turn in my GPLe Mans race, and it pissed me off... :(

I don't really have a 'set' turn-in point. That's probably why I can't be consistent. I may have a braking point, but it's more like "Okay, right about....HERE..." Part of my problem is that I can't see the track clearly enough to 'anticipate' where I'll be. I have to 'react' to where the car is when it gets there... Ok, I realize that won't make any sense to anyone but me...<g>

Agreed. I learned this at the Skip Barber school. You turn early, so now the angle on the exit will cause you to drift off the turn. If you lift(common reaction) the weight unloading from the back and onto the front(likely in full turning lock) tends to cause a snap spin. There are some turns where I turn early 95% of the time, and don't know why. Someone mentioned this about my Rouen replay(turn 2 and Gresil). I watched the replay again, and sure enough, I was turning 1.5 to 2 car lengths earlier than he was. So back to the track I go, armed with this new knowledge. Guess what - I *still* turn early. I even tried driving in granny mode, and still wanted to turn early. Rouen is one of the tracks where I can't see the turns clearly, so I think I'm turning at the FIRST sign of entering the turn, which is too early. I think I do the same thing at Masta, which has cost me more Ferraris than I can count...<g> > you cant be a good bowler and not have some >athletic ability. be more confident while driving because it seems you >enter most corners positive something will go wrong.Just a thought. I >hope >this helps you and if you've already tried all this-try again! I don't seem to be able to pick up enough clues/feedback/etc from the game to place the car where I want it. I have NO problems doing this in my passenger car, and really didn't have any problems at Laguna Seca. I can't get the correct sense of speed(or whatever) from my monitor.

I really don't race VROC that much, except for league races or on weekends. For one, I got tired of driving around by myself in pickup races after people disco'd or rocketed off into the distance. Two, my dialup SUCKS... :( But, but during a league practice session last year, I set a PB in a Cooper while being chased around Monaco by someone who was MUCH faster that I was(and we both knew it). He wasn't trying to pass, but he kept up SERIOUS pressure. I didn't beat that PB in ANY car for another 8 months - and only beat it by .3 with a Ferrari<g>. So, I understand how driving close to someone could help. Eldred....take it from me...I only have major practice at Monza, brief affairs with the others, but I was 1.29.74 PB and was NOT going to get faster,i was in an Eldred Rut <g> Then I went online had some asswipe smash me,got VERY angry due to the circumstances and set off chasing him. Three laps later I caught him and smashed him hard....and pressed ESC. Saved the replay for later and left. Next day,was intrigued to see who the 'accused' was..... ...and about DIED when I saw my 2 clear lap times...!! 1.27.93 and 1.28.04.. and mate....never been near since. My PB apart from those 2 laps is 1.28.93 now,so i have improved but hell do I yearn for that <devil> inside to return. Morgan

Yup...catch 22...that is why so many people are getting stuck at the same mark at Monza... I used to find this sort of thing happening a lot. I finally put it down to hitting the bump rubbers. Raising the car or shortening the bump stops certainly helped a lot, but it still happens occasionally. I think, maybe, in ideal circumstance, the car gets close to the bump stops. Or in my case, there is enough leeway that most of the time I can correct my line/speed without contact. Once something goes just that little bit more wrong, the required corrections cause extra suspension travel which may go that extra fraction of an inch and cause the bump stops to come into play. So, suddenly, the car goes completely out of your control. But I'm just guessing. BTW, Eldred, you used to complain that you couldn't see the track very well, so can't judge where the edge is, leading to problems selecting the right line for one. What is your ambient light level? I have relatively small windows in my computer(/dining, heh) room, and even so in full daylight I can hardly see the track myself. I often need to pull the curtains in daylight, especially in the mornings when the sun is on that side of the house. Just a thought, try darkening the room somewhat. -- Peter

Who knows? I'd have to search the setup screen to even FIND the ride height on my setups. I don't know what it is at the moment...

Ceiling light almost over my head, and the light has 2 60W bulbs in it. That light is usually on when I working on my computer, since there aren't any other lights nearby. I don't notice any glare on my screen, even now that you've drawn my attention to it...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL F1 hcp. +28.67...F2 +151.26...F3 hcp. +373.73 Never argue with an idiot.
