Newcomer breaks 1:32 at Monza in GPL

Craig Jones celebrated breaking 1:32 at Monza and asked a list of humorous questions about jumped starts, his crush on Alison Hine and his wife's complaints. Replies mixed practical answers, such as waiting until the pitboard disappears, with jokes about engine-sound devices and learning GPL before real driving lessons.

...1:31 here I come (eventually) Okay, so it's relatively slow. But I reckon if my times are 5 seconds off the pace of the really quick guys, I'm the equivalent of a Pedro de la Rosa of today?! A few questions for the GPLers of ras: If I have to come in to the pits for a jumped start, how long to I have to wait? What key turns off the handbrake on my Ferrari?(!) Maybe I'm leaving it on throughout my laps... Should I feel bad about having a crush on Alison Hine? Is it normal to be thinking about the fastest exit from Ascari whilst at work? What do I do about a wife who describe's the 312's gorgeous sound as 'too loud'?

Your problems will really start if... 1. you're thinking about Alison Hine whilst at work 2. Your wife reads this ng & finds out about your aforementioned crush on AH 3. You record the "312's gorgeous sound" and play it in your road car on the way to work

Are you using any of the helps (throttle, brake or shifting)? If so learn to do without them. When I finally learned to drive without throttle assist and anti lock brakes my monza times went from 1:32s into the 1:30s in a matter of weeks. They really do hinder you alot. If you arent using any helps...then all I can say is practice practice practice. You'll get there eventually...took me a year before I got into the 1:29s at Monza and I only just recently am I able to be competitive on almost every track. Watch some fast lap replays and see where those guys brake... accelerate... etc. Youll find it helps alot to see how a fast lap is run. >Should I feel bad about having a crush on Alison Hine? > Hmm...not sure on this one...what does your wife think? :) j/k >Is it normal to be thinking about the fastest exit from Ascari whilst at >work? Yup...untill of course you master Monza and move on to Nurburgring....then you spend countless hours reviewing the best line through Tiergarten...and Hatzenbach, and Bergwerk...well you get the idea... >What do I do about a wife who describe's the 312's gorgeous sound as 'too >loud'? Invest in a set of quality headphones. I got a pair of Aiwa HP-X222 enclosed phones at BestBuy for about $35 USD. But you can spend as much as you want...if you have $100 or more to burn thers a full assortment of excellent studio quality headphones around. Maybe someone else can make a suggestion as to the higher end ones go (personally I think my Aiwas are just as good but thats me...) Hope some of this helps. I am by no means a top notch GPL'er but I have owned it since pretty much the initial release date so I have alot of miles under my belt with it :) Chris

Yes indeed, I remember seeing the same device on BBC1's Tomorrow's World, back in the 80's. At the time I thought it was silly! But now I won't one for my VW Camper Van :). Cheers Gerry

hmm.. how abouts would we start doing a search on this on the web? maybe a newsgroup talking about inventions or something? or...? I'd be interested to know if it's still available and just how much one would cost. He worked on an active noise-cancellation system that they fitted to a Citroen (IIRC) saloon car for demonstrations. He told me they'd put a journalist in the driving seat and turn the system on and he'd be very polite about the wonderful system, how it made the car like a Rolls-Royce, etc. Then as well as subtracting the noise of the Citroen engine they'd add any engine sound they fancied. All of a sudden this poor old Citroen would be hammering down the straight, screaming round the bends, as the driver got high on the glorious sounds! I don't know what became of the system, but I think it would be tricky to retrofit (especially if a Geo Storm is what I think it is :-). I once found a frequency on my previous (anciant) radio wich made a noises that sounded like a lawnmower and it increased in pitch as my engine revved up. They still sell it here in South Africa for about US$12. I as usual bought it for about US$20 about a month before the price dropped... I started playing seriously and almost gave up. When I started doing the research thing on the web I found out about the F2 & F3 racing hack. That changed things substantially for me. I was finally able to go through corners without losing it totally. The next big advance was getting the dualshock analog control working. Its rare that a game remains soo damn good so long after its release. Now that I think about it. There can't be many games attracting first time players 3 years after its release... *ramble mode off* regards all, ian

I've actually owned GPL for around two years now, but made the classic newbie decision of giving up after a few (okay, ALOT of) spins at the Glen, and drowned my sorrows in NFS Porsche Unleashed and GP3. After lurking in this fine ng I became intrigued with words like 'trailbraking', '36pfs', 'GPLRank' and 'Eldred'. One PC upgrade and Alison Hine's <blush> site bookmark later, I'm now joining the ranks of frustrated (yet enthusiastic) drivers and sub-10 minute 'Ring wannabes across the world. God bless this ng!! <sniff> Btw, other classic wifey quotes, re. GPL :- On my driving - "you're not very good, are you?" On the Lotus's sound - "is it supposed to sound like that?" On the news of my blood, sweat and tears which resulted in a 1:32 at Monza - "what shall we have for dinner" You can see what I'm up against. I'm sure Schuey doesn't get this sort of 'enthusiasm' from Corrina. Can't believe there really is a duct-tape website; my order's now in place! (Only joking, love).

I am also doing driving lessons and GPL at the same time. You'd be surprised how often one improves the other, although I'm still to stubborn to play it in manual. Perhaps I will when I get a paddle shift. (Gee that's authentic!) So if you see a fiesta diesel using all the revs away from traffic lights, that's probably me about to be told off. :) I had a female instructor in my first driving lessons! An ugly and not so nice one so it wasn't really a plus. I don't know why but she seemed to hate me because I (thought I) knew what was going on. Instructors don't seem to like that. They want to teach and they get annoyed if they can't I guess. The only thing she learned me was to pay attention to the speed-o-meter. Never learned to do that before. I didn't do a 4 wheel drift 'cause... Well that bmw 320d is kind of exensive and judging from my gpl ranking I'm not very good(yet). Sjoerd

Why did you give up on the key board? Decent FF wheels are REALLY high priced here... so I got 1:29.8 in a lotus with the numpad/F5-6-7 combo without slipstreaming. I think training mode and hotlaps do not help, single race is the way to go IMHO. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Dude, I'm with you. My latest stretch of singularity is getting really old and it has only been 6 months. I'm 38 and all the chicks that I recall (he he) being all over me the last time I was single seem to have other interests. Boo Hoo. :-) Chris In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] (EldredP) wrote: > In article <[email hidden]>, AndreWarringa

I had learned GPL long before this. Guess what? I didn't scare my instructor. :) Hell, according to anyone that I ask, I'm a good driver. Looks like GPL was good for SOMETHING. :) P.S. It was nice that we had snow one day I was out with my instructor. He had me drive onto a deep-covered back road of my subdivision and learn a few things about snow. First, he had me jam on the brakes as hard as I could so I would know what anti-lock brakes sound like so I never freak out if I get on the brakes hard. Secondly, he had me do a burnout to see if I could control the car. :) Now, since I've had plenty of practice doing starts on GPL, I managed this perfectly. ;) ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited http://simcrash.00game.com
