Fixing GPL texture corruption and freezes on Voodoo3

M Connolly asked how to fix texture corruption and freezes in GPL on a Voodoo3. After suggestions of more RAM and patches, Roger Squires recommended George Smiley's Glide wrapper with its GPL override and mirror update options, which Andre Warringa confirmed fixed the problem. Posters also compared framerates on different CPUs.

Hi, I use a P3-500, 64MB, V3, SB Live & LWFF for GPL. The system seems fast enough to run with most "goodies" on, but I'm living with some annoying glitches. From the beginning I was suffering texture corruption - usually a "snowy" track or terrain. At first I assumed this was just a driver issue and I upgraded a few times from 3dfxgamer.com But the problem persists. Right now I'm using the retail release for the V3 from last November (I think) - I quit upgrading the driver as it didn't seem to make any difference. The problem comes and goes - seems most frequent at Spa for some reason. I also get screen freezes, especially during VROC races (and usually on the last lap!). I am always careful to kill all background apps, but of course it could be swapfile related. I'm happy with my frame rates but I'm losing patience with these glitches, and am seriously considering splashing out on a V5 in an effort to solve them. I love GPL track graphics and it seems a shame to switch them off! Am I "thinking wrong"? Would an upgrade to 128MB RAM help? Will I get the best out of a V5 with a P500? Am I paying $150 just for FSAA? Is it a driver thing after all? Your advice would be appreciated. Michael.
Well, i can't help for your freezes, but if you have to upgrade i recomand you a GeForce + D3D Patch, that is IMO the best solution , very good gfx and constant 36fps with every thing on ( Athlon 600+GeForce DDR ). regards, "M. Connolly" a crit :

Sometimes we have to ask VERY basic questions. I apologize if this has already been covered. Have you updated GPL to the v1.21? The patch is available at www.papy.com and somebody in another thread posted a direct link to that patch. dave henrie "M. An earlier poster pointed out that a RAM upgrade is a no-brainer these days, and that's undoubtedly true. I just can't see how that's going to help with the texture problems. I'm guessing that the 16MB on the V3 is more of a limitation in this regard. Am I wrong? M
That's a pretty unusual problem to be having with GPL, particularly on a V3. There are definitely lots of V3 drivers out there that run GPL flawlessly, which suggests maybe it's not the drivers. If you have a non-intel chipset motherboard (say VIA or something) then it could be the AGP drivers, or it could be faulty RAM, or even a faulty video card or motherboard. That's just guess work though, I certainly wouldn't go throwing money at the problem until you're sure what's wrong. I don't suppose you can try the suspect parts in another PC can you? That's the only way to be sure. Really, theres loads of things that could cause this kind of problem. I presume you aren't overclocking either the video card, CPU, or AGP slot. And check you haven't got any old glide files hanging around in your GPL folder, except the one that should be there. Maybe it would be worth trying a fresh install of GPL (in a new folder so you don't lose your current install) ? Lastly if your current V3 drivers support HSR (hidden surface removal) then turn it off. "M. So if you've got less than 128M now (64M?), then 16M of that is unavailable to you as its used for graphics. Sort of. There's no way that having a 16MB card is affecting GPL in any way. GPL runs perfectly on a 16MB V3. It also runs perfectly on a 12MB V2. It even runs, although slowly, on a 4 MB V1. And lack of texture memory would only ever effect speed, it would never cause corruption of textures. "M. Mine is a PII-350 w/64mb ram, V3-3000AGP, SB Live and I dont have these problems. I run gpl at 1024 and have the replay memory set to 20000. I'm using July 99 drivers for the V3. So I doubt it is a ram or driver issue. Make sure the glide settings are all off and the image quality is at auto in 3fdx tweaks. Dont know if it matters but I have the desktop set to 16 bit hi color. An overheated V3 will cause texture corruption so trying it with the cover off is a good idea. My card seemed to run hot so I added a card cooler and a slot fan. youIn article <[email hidden]>, M. Connolly <[email hidden]> wrote: > Hi, > > I use a P3-500, 64MB, V3, SB Live & LWFF for GPL. V3 texture corruption is completely fixed with the "GPL Override = 1" glide.ini wrapper option. This also eliminates the endless mode-switching when going from track to menus. Don't forget the mirrorupdate=2 for framerate boost. Download it, Use it, Love it! rms [email hidden]

What type of framerate do you get, with which graphics options? Your system is slower than mine, and I'm looking for a comparison.. True, but GPL patch 1.2 also fixes the same problem, and MC said he's running 1.2. "Roger Squires" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:63_d6.4267$[email hidden]...

I installed this also yesterday, and indeed, on my system the texture problems are gone also :) Only problem is that the menu screen is now not full screen anymore, more like 1/3 of the screensize, but it's more than worth it. Andre, there's a switch in the INI file for "full screen" mode or some such. Read the docs and the INI fully. My question: So, is using that humongous overhead mirror a "cheat" on par with the F10 view or swapping engines? Will GPL-purists boo me off the track? OTOH, as my buddy and I figured out, get that big honkin' mirror at *just* the right angle and you get a ton of downforce... :) "But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

I get a solid 36 fps at 1024 except on the grid. All ahead boxes checked except driver arms. Cars only in mirrors. Quality and effects all checked except AA. Detail slider a tad left of center. Mirror detail full and trackside objects full. Sounds at 16. At monza with AI at 19 I get 25 on the grid and get to 36 about 1/2 way to T1. There is a slight drop in heavy traffic. Hmm...I only get 22 fps on the grid with the same settings. I actually have the detail slider farther left. Something must be funky with my system. I have a K63-400, 96MB, V3 AGP and SBLive. Two things which might make a difference, I have a pdpi game card which is worth a couple fps and I have vsync off on the vid card. Of course the third thing is mine is Intel PII vs K6.
