The ugliest Formula One cars ever

Posters nominated the ugliest F1 cars, including Derek Daly's 1979 Ensign, the March 711, the six-wheel Tyrrell and the Ferrari 312T4, sharing Forix photo links. Discussion also covered traditional national racing colors.

Ah, yes, the old card table on the nose of the car trick... Guess the wind tunnel was down for maintenance when they came up with that design! Anyway, odd and freakish, yes, but I think the Ensign was much more hideous. To each his own. Lol BTW, your link didn't work. I had to find 1971 in Forix and go to the photo gallery. Ok, here's the link, to make it easy... >Ah, yes, the old card table on the nose of the car trick... Guess the >wind tunnel was down for maintenance when they came up with that design! FWIW it looks more like a surfboard mounted to the nose :) Either way its odd...shows what some teams did to simply "improve" upon last years car back then. Look at some of the monstrousities that filled the back of the grid at Indy in the late 60s early 70s...talk about plyboard remodeling :) And yes the Ensign is far uglier...and to think they actually DESIGNED it that way. Chris
for your information this car is still racing today. It is driven by Peter MULLER, team manager of a race truck team and is entered in the FIA classic F1 championship. This championship is with F1 cars from 1970 until 1978 (the black lotus of andretti), they are having 6 or 7 races per year on european tracks, some of the races are with us (the trucks), at least 2 next year, Nurburg (mid july) and Zolder (end of september). Even though the drivers are not "professionals" the noise is still there, and what a noise, you also have the 6 wheel tyrell from Depailler. I think the "Ugliest F1 car" award has to go to the 6-wheel Tyrrell or the 1979 Ferrari 312 T4. Urgh :-) - Cheers! Graeme Nash
I think the past two Ferraris are OOGLY(Derek Daly's word) I just saw the 2001 Ferrari and it is MARGINALLY better, the nose droops some now. The Car Schooey won the WC in looked to me like a dang Preying Mantiss... (now comes the argument...it doesn't matter what it looks like, so long as it is fast...){here is the reply to that in advance: BOLLUCKS!} dave henrie "Graeme Nash" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

hey Graeme! I used to think that Ferrari was an ugly beast too, until I saw the December 2000 issue of F1 Racing magazine! They've made that Ferrari look like a Sex Machine (As the article is named :-) Tecki Graeme Nash <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

The Ugliest race car I've ever seen was an Austin Maestro Turbo Diesel Automatic (I'm not kidding!) in a saloon car race last year at Castle Combe. Although I'd say it's probably the worst possible car for track racing it was by no means last. Some Call Me Tim

When I visited 2 years ago, the car was on display at Donnington Park museum. Andy.
Ugliest cars I ever saw? Anything from the 2000 grid would fit that bill nicely ! MS <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:959q1n$tt6$[email hidden]...

That'll be the March 711. Peterson actually took that car to four second places in 1971 and finished runner up in the championship. Dem was da days when you could buy a chassis and a Cossie and go racing with the big boys at Grands Prix <sigh> MS <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:95a0a2$422$[email hidden]...

Naa, I don't think the current cars are that ugly, compared to all those seventies' abominations people have presented here. The problem is that they all look identical. BTW, I understand that in the past F1 cars used to be painted according to some kind of scheme of national colors. Do the modern cars pay any heed to this tradition? +Cinquo
Red was Italy. Green was England Blue was France Silver was Germany(?) Ferrari developed a specific 'Blood Red' color that has been bastardized by the Marlboro Orange-Red they are forced to wear now. The Ligier/Prost still run blue. The Lotus colors were green but none of the current English teams run a strick British Green. However the Jaguar team does run a shade of green. the rest carry sponsorhsip colors not national colors dave henrie "Ville V Sinkko" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:95k25r$rrq$[email hidden]...

Silver was the traditional German racing color due to a special happening: Somewhen a car was to heavy to fulfil the regulations. So the mechanics scratched off all the paint during the night and the car started aluminum-silver on the next day. Later white became the official German racing color. No, I can believe it's a significant weight savings on a jumbo jet. But, we're talking about a single-seater racing car, not a 747...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL F1 hcp. +28.67...F2 +151.26...F3 hcp. +373.73 Never argue with an idiot.
