Today I tried out this overclocking V3 voltage hack
http://www.geocities.com/frankisger/v3volt.htm
and it had zero effect on overclock-ability for me, but it *did* prompt me
to improve the voodoo3 cooling a bit, and that made a significant
difference.
I carefully took off the stock heatsink (twist side-to-side, be patient),
scraped off the lousy heat-tape they had used and replaced it with compound,
then mounted an old 486 fan on it. Remarkably the mounting holes in the fan
lined up exactly with the holes in the V3 heatsink, so a couple screws and
1/2 hour later I was done.
Now I'm running at 186 with complete stability (vs. 172 before) and the
heatsink is barely warm (vs. quite hot before). This is a no-brainer for
die-hard V3 owners. There are designer kits at http://www.2cooltek.com for
V3&V5 but heatsinks for the memory chips are just for looks, and the stock
heatsink seems adequate, once you help it do its job. Remember to test
stability by running 3d games for some time, desktop apps don't cut it.
