Just thought you guys might be interested in a reply that I received from
Sierra today about the problems with Nascar 4 and some CDROM and DVDROM
drives. Maybe it will help some of you.
David Hearn
--------------------------------------------
Summary: Can't play Nascar 4. Won't start
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:
At 02/09/2001 10:49 AM we wrote - There are a few systems that are
having conflicts between some of their components and the new copy
protection software (SecuROM) used with this game. Specifically the
issues are with the CD-ROM drive, sound card, and some of the
maintenance suite software packages.
Some manufacturers, such as Kenwood, have resolved this issue with
firmware upgrades for the CD-ROM drive. Contact either the computer
or CD-ROM Mfg. for the firmware upgrade and instructions on applying
this upgrade.
The Hourglass problem can also result from conflicts with outdated
or incompatible driver software for the sound or video card. Always
be sure that the computer has the latest drivers for the video card
and sound card. Drivers are frequently updated to keep the hardware
current and to fine tune performance.
To find the brand and model of the sound and video cards as well as
the CD ROM:
Click the Start button, choose Settings, and then Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click the Display Adapters icon, then the icon of the listed
device.
Make a note of the name and manufacturer of the device.
Double-click the Sound, video and game controllers icon then the
icon of the listed device.
Make a note of the name and manufacturer of the device.
Update the sound and video drivers
Driver software is generally available for free as a download on the
Web site of the card manufacturer. The particular Web site can be
located by a Web search, although domain names are often the name of
the manufacturer itself (just as Sierra On-Line is found at
www.sierra.com). There are also general driver sites such as
http://www.windrivers.com and http://www.driverzone.com.
When a driver file is found that is the latest for the particular
model of card, select it for download. A window will come up asking
what to do with the file; select Save it to disk. Find a place on
your hard drive to download the driver software; be sure to create a
new folder to contain the driver software. After the download, go
into the driver software folder in the hard drive and double-click
on the executable to extract the other files. There will be at least
one README file with instructions on how to install the drivers.
These directions are brief, and relatively simple to follow, but are
extremely precise, so read and follow the instructions carefully.
For further information on how to update the Video and Sound
drivers, please contact the Mfg. of the computer or the specific
hardware Mfg.
*NOTE* Users with the Creative PCI64 should download the latest
PCI64 drivers from Creative Labs Support.
The Hourglass issue may also be caused by the joystick port settings
on some soundcards conflicting with the copy protection software.
Please follow the instructions below to disable the joystick port.
****NOTE**** disabling the gameport will render any device connected
to the gameport (sound card) inoperable. As the device is necessary
for use with NASCAR 4, we have developed a work-around to re-enable
the device once the game has started. If your controller connects to
the USB port, disabling the gameport will not affect the operation
of the controller.
To disable the gameport:
Right-click on My Computer.
Left-click on Properties.
Click the + next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
Click on the sound card.
Click on Properties.
Click on Settings.
Put a check in the disable Joystick port box.
Click on OK.
Start the game.
If the game will not start, re-trace the steps above, but remove the
DISABLE selection.
If the game did start, but your controller is connected via the
gameport, do the following:
First, you must have set the video to run in Direct3D. If OpenGL was
chosen it will be necessary to run CONFIGURE 3D GRAPHICS from the
Main Menu. Select DIRECT3D as a renderer and click NEXT. Set the
GRAPHICS MODE to 640x480x16 and click FINISH.
Next, hold down the ALT key (on the keyboard) and, while continuing
to hold down the ALT key, press the TAB key (on the keyboard). This
will drop you out of the game. The game is still running and will be
indicated on the TASKBAR.
Now, re-enable the gameport:
Right-click on My Computer.
Left-click on Properties.
Click the + next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
Click on the sound card.
Click on Properties.
Click on Settings.
Remove the check in the disable Joystick port box.
Click on OK.
Re-start the game by clicking N4.1.0.0.0 on the TASKBAR.
Sure am glad there is an easy fix for something that should work out of the
box......

From the SecureRom website(below), boy, the 0.01% you out there sure whine a
lot.... ;-)
"Compatible:
Unlike other systems on the market SecuROMT does not employ
unreadable sectors (C2 errors) on the disc to create an electronic keycode.
Due to its highly advanced digital signature (keycode) SecuROMT is offering
an unmatched high compatibility rate (> 99,9 %) with all CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
drives on the market to save you from costly consumer calls to your tech
support helpline. "

David,
Thanks for the info.
You know, that 2-pager could be reduced to one line:
1. Sierra removes stupid copy protection that doesn't protect anything
anyway.

Oh really?
So when do I have time to go to work.
What a bunch of hogwash. There's no way we should have to deal with this
convuluted work around.
Alanb
The last time I saw "help" that was this
complicated was the advice offered by Zipper and
Microsoft on how to get Crimson Skies to load.
Nothing quite like having to flash the BIOS in
order to get past the splash screen.....

Actually the process is not as Sierra describes it, at least not as
difficult. I wonder who writes these things? Here they screw things up and
then like a bunch of buffoons they compose a fix that by their estimation
takes longer than it should.
First, you do not need to be in 640x480 resolution: any will do. Second,
you don't have to be in Direct 3D mode: OpenGl will do.
Just disable the joystick port, start the game, atl-tab out, re-enable the
port, go back in, select "direct input" (the one at the bottom-- not sure
what it's called), calibrate wheel, and you're all set.
I wasn't able to calibrate wheel when I had the top button selected.
Despite this, we shouldn't have to do all this crap and a fix is warranted.

Like most of these, it won't actually address the problem. It just gets the
user off the phone.

Damnit, when will people learn? The ONLY effect of copy protection is
to inconvenience legitimate customers. It has been this way for twenty
years.
Why do they insist on inflicting this punishment on their customers?
It has NO EFFECT on piracy whatsoever. Thank goodness for
gamecopyworld. The crack will be up there in days if it isn't already.

Seems to me the only thing it would deter them from doing is keeping
the game. They'll return the flawed product to the store.

Probably wrong. It has a huge positive effect on piracy.
No cracker would be proud to present the first
working warez - as long as the original has no protection..
I guess, half of the warez-sites wouldn't be there
without cracker groups wanting to show off their skillz :)
