While Montoya has visited Australia as part of the CART series, he has never
driven the Albert Park circuit where Formula One stages its races. Still,
the Colombian doesn't see it as a problem.
"I've driven it lots of times -- on computer games," says Montoya. "It's not
the real thing but it gives you an idea how you've got to turn right, left
and stuff like that."

Don't laugh too hard.
Before the first race of his career in Melbourne a couple of years ago, I
had the privilege of spending a day in the Arrows pits speaking to Pedro de
la Rosa (among others). My friend commented to him that he had read in the
papers that Pedro had been using Sony Playstation to learn the track. Pedro
stated no he hadn't. In fact he had the disc, but his brother had taken his
console.
He then asked if we knew where to get him one. Picked one up for him, which
he had a play on that night. Speaking to him after he had played it, he then
stated that the game play was not even close to realistic, but he said that
it was really helpful in learning the track.
Now is it a coincidence that he came in 6th in that race - his first and
only points so far in his carreer.
If it worked for PdlR, why not Montoya also?

Spa the first time, and didn't he do something fairly stupendous? (I don't
think he actually crashed that year :)

I read in a Car & Driver article that Juan learned most of the CART tracks
the same way. I think he used Microsoft CART Precision Racing.

Actually, Montoya used ICR2 to learn the tracks in CART before his carrer in
Champcars,... and JV used and f1 sim (can't remember which) to learn the
tracks in F1 when he moed overe there,...
The funny part isnt so much the fact JPM used sims to learn the tracks, its
the quote. he sounds like a 12 year old kid,...
Yip, Himself and Jacques are confirmed computer racers!
A few others show signs of it too, but in a more of a "Need for speed" way
rather than a GPL loving way :-)

What's so funny about it? I'm sure you can learn at least the layout of a
track from any proper sim (as long as it's not too old :-). With the better
sims I imagine you can also learn roughly where to brake and where to shift.
Cheers,

Well, if you buy one of those high, high end simulators that gives you all
feedback possible and runs the track on a hugh screen wrapping around your
vision... ;-)

It was also in Gerry Donaldson's J.V. book about him using it for Spa.

That's Montoya for you. About the only time I've seen him not acting like a 12
year old is when he's talking about his car. OTOH, the only times I've seen him
in person was at the Naz in the pits. Still, he's got all the youthful
exuberance of a 12 year old who's living a dream. Given what he's achieved so
far, I suppose that's close to the truth.
