In GPLrank and the Ranking system for F1cs2k, the Americans lag far far
behind the
rest of the world. Why? I believe, after moments of shallow thought, I
have discovered the reason. Americans drive differently than many other
countries...and so far no sim has
model the style that will allow we Yanks to excell. What is missing?
No sim, to date, has included a cell phone to be used while driving. Once
that oversight
is corrected, you'll see Americans literally jump through the rankings.
After all, how can you expect us to do well when we don't have our heads
crimped over to hold the phone up and how well do you think the rest of the
world will do when they have to drive with one
hand like most Americans do these days?
dave henrie
Flame warJoke theory on why Americans rank low in F1 sims
Dave Henrie joked that Americans lag in GPLRank and F1CS2K rankings because no sim models their driving style, such as using a cell phone at the wheel. Some readers missed the joke and responded with threats, prompting others to defend him, and the thread spun off into long off-topic arguments over whether the US is the greatest country, Europe, language and football.

I suppose none of you chest-thumpers noticed that the original post said

NO Don , I'm not a S.P. hiding behind my computer. And I truly am an
American.(and said as much a couple of times in the original post.)
Traveled throughout the West, Lived in two States. With the exception of a
few days in Canada, I have never left the country.
I am, and have said so here MANY times, a ridiculously BAD sim racer.
But I enjoy it and I find humour(or at least I thought I did) in mine and

We don't
encourage people talking while driving, but, in an attempt to make it safer we
give a hands free earpiece with each phone. So, what does that have to do with
anything? Well, I actually had a set of headphones on while racing (roomie was
sleeping at the time), and answered a phonecall with it in. Found out how
comfortable those NASCAR drivers must be while using those earpices in the
cars/trucks.

The same study that showed the use of a cell phone while driving makes you 4
times more likely to crash also claims that using a hands free device did
NOT reduce that number.

Wrong! Act Labs has an RS Star-Tac add-on pack for $39.99. It includes 200
minutes a month talk time, which is a pretty good deal. But I still think
you're wrong, the cell phone isn't what's missing. American's, myself
included, need a "road rage" feature to get us going. Ideally this will be
a foreigner with diplomatic plates driving without any regard for local
laws. Although I guess saying a diplomat disregards local driving laws
would be redundant ;-).
If this person was simulated as the leader in an F1 race sim, American's
would have no trouble catching up and passing. The only problem is that
after passing, we'd be unable to avoid the uncontrollable urge to slam on
the brakes in order to scare the crap out of the guy ;-).

That's funny. Most Brits insist that the language used in the US is debased at
best, unintelligible at worst. I've learned to take that with a grain of salt as it
is coming from a group that would gladly mug each other while professing a love for
a 'football club'. Particularly when sport in question is soccer....

In Australia there is a $120 fine and a loss of points from your licence if
caught using a cell-phone while driving - Then again, we've had compulsory
seat belts since 1976 and we still don't see anyone in American movies/TV
wearing them.
Now all we need is the same (cell-phone) rule for people smoking while
driving

Hehehe.. that's what Icelandic people say too. :) Once you spend a
week in Iceland you go "Wow! This place freaking rocks!!!! Why isn't
everyone here?"
And the Icelander's will say "We like it quiet.. so let's keep it that

American is only similar to English. :)
RB
Ahhh.. the soccer/football argument. :)
Well... soccer is clearly "football" in any language. American
football should change its name to "TackleBall" or "American Rugby" or
even "WarBall" but not Football!
A player in American Football touches the ball with his foot maybe 5%
of the entire game.. MAYBE! "Soccer" doesn't represent the game at
all. I guess that's the great Americanism.. call two sports the
completely wrong name while taking the true name from one and giving
it to the other.
Almost like calling racing "walking" and then calling walking
"Buddledeedoo."

That's right. The time when you are most distracted is when you want to end
the call (too busy thinking about how much it's costing you) and you can't
end a call with the handsfree.

Not only that, but they've executed, on numerous occasions, mentally
retarded people. Only lesson they're teaching the populace is to hate
the government. You can also strangle shoplifters to death, & somehow
it's OK. "It wouldn't have happened if they didn't shoplift" is the

I think the people that crash while using a cell phone just have an
inability to do more than one thing at a time. People have been talking for
decades while driving. Truck drivers most of all using CB radios. I don't
know what the statistics are of accidents for commercial drivers, but I know
in the 7 years I spent doing it I drove more miles that I would have in
almost 40 years of normal driving and never once had an accident.

It's funny - I was driving home from work yesterday in a sudden snowstorm. A
customer/friend of mine called my cell phone, and I answered it. I was talking
to him while watching the results of multiple idiots spun off on the side of
the road. I even watched the 18-wheeler in front of me start to slide(he
stopped in time), but *I* wasn't worried. I had already left enough rome to
safely stop. I think people tailgating on icy roads is pretty damn stupid.
THAT"S what causes problems - tailgating in general. People drive like they're
going into turn 1 on VROC, and not leaving enough room...

I did a complete trip from Norfolk to DC like that once. No Cell phone
either.
180 miles and 3 hours went by. When I pulled up to the house, I realized
that I didn't remember the trip.

What we need are Cell Phones that are engineered with some sort of respect
to a Human Interface incorporated.
Anyone here use a Nextel 1000+ ?
SHEESH!
This is the most ergonomically challanged piece of electronics I have EVER
seen. They could not possible have made it any harder to perform even the
simplest functions.
This is the most bass-ackwards piece of electronics JUNK I have ever seen.

Everytime I hear someone say: My country is the BEST, I just take

Euro-court outlaws criticism of EU
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in Brussels
THE European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that the European Union can
lawfully suppress political criticism of its institutions and of leading
figures, sweeping aside English Common Law and 50 years of European
precedents on civil liberties.

If you mean reading the Telegraph on issues involving the EU (and expecting

What's wrong with you? Don't you read the news? We shoot our own children
here.
The reason there seem to be so many under-par american drivers is simple.
There are so many americans, and every one is too stupid to keep the bad
news about their IQ's to themselves. Unlike the chinks, ewes, and ozzies,
who seem to have too much self respect to appraise themselves publicly.
Mike.

But at least the rocks blow up once in a while to keep things interesting.
Especially for the sheep standing on them at the time.

On the other hand England no longer has lions and 1000 lb. carnivorous
bears roaming around peoples back yards.
There are huge areas of the US that still actually do, in esentially urban
settings. Believe it or not.

I have always stated the the term " freedom" is entirely relative to just
what it is you wish to be free to do.
If you wish to smoke a joint with a hooker, male or female, Holland is
certainly a freer and better place than the US.
