Bearing in mind how many people are disappointed with the frame rates in N4,
it got me wondering as to exactly how many frames per second are acceptable
to people. As much as I have bitched about N4 graphics, 17/16 FPS when I
played the game wasn't that choppy. In fact, I found that if I turned the
frame counter off, after a while I forgot about how low they were (running
as they did from about 30 FPS to 17FPS) and to my amazement I just started
to enjoy the gaming experience.
If a motion picture (or is a TV picture, I can't remember which) runs at 24
FPS do we really need any more than this? If I remember rightly, didn't GPL
restrict the FPS at number not much more than this?
Just some thoughts from a 'limey'.

Is there a frame rate key in N4? I would like to see what I am

was getting 12-15 FPS until I got that powerful 4Meg rendition card and bumped
it up to near 30. With N3 I was getting 22-30 with my P3 450 and a V3 2000. Now
with N4 (same system) I'm getting 19-38 FPS. It averages about 26 FPS, but even
when it dips to 19 it isn't noticeably choppy. I'm running most graphics,
medium detail on mirror and no animated steering wheel.
Sure I'd like to get the high FPS with maximum detail and am looking at
upgrading but it's not as critical as I was lead to believe. I'd say averaging
above 20 with a bottom of 15 FPS with many graphics turned off is playable, and
as people upgrade they can turn the eye candy on and enjoy higher FPS.

P3-1Ghz and V5-5500 in D3D DX7a
World detail at half, 43 ahead, 3 behind, 75% ahead 10% behind, all others
on gets no lower than 36 fps online no matter what other than huge pileup,
many times pegged at 85. Usually around 60. Very happy

30 FPS is about all the human eye can perceive. I am amazed at how N4
eat up my machine frame rate so fast. Using a P3-850 with 256 meg of ram
and an Elsa Gladia GeForce2 GTS 32m AGP video card, I can get in the
upper 70's/low 80s in testing mode by myself with everything turned on for
graphics. Great huh? The minute I get into a race with 42 other cars, it
can
drop into the 20's (even a teen now and then!). Something is wrong
somewhere
in the game. What makes me really laugh is Papy's suggested set up of a
P3-600
with 128 meg and a 32 meg AGP card.... if this game can punt my FPS down
into the gutter, a 600 sure as hell is gonna move like glue. The move from
N3
to N4 shifted the focus from gameplay to eye candy. I'm back to N3 until a
decent patch for N4 comes out.
On another note, I have the 3D Revelator glasses for the Elsa and running N4
in D3D mode, the results are stunning. It's like you're IN THE CAR for
real. The
tracks have a spacious feel and look and the other cars have a presence
around
you that seems more physical. If you have a TNT, TNT2 or GeForce card, you
should check these glasses out. For the $34 bucks I paid, I was skeptical
but that
lasted for about 2 seconds after they came to life.
