Just wondering whether having a Cable Modem service or DSL/ADSL means lower pings for online gaming in the majority of circumstances? Also, anyone had any experience with Blueyonder from Telewest in the UK (cable modem service)?
It depends on your provider... It really does... In Northern Virginia, we have Cox RoadRunner Cable. It has become notorious for packet losses and horrendous latency issues. At times, it is almost impossible to do ANY online gaming at all. The packet losses get so bad, effective transfer rates, as measured by Internet Bandwidth Test, drop to, get this, less than 100k/sec. This is all supposed to be fixed by the end of the month, but it's been like this for like 8 months, and we've been paying full price for lackluster service. -Larry "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3gtr6.3512$[email hidden]... > Just wondering whether having a Cable Modem service or DSL/ADSL meanslower > pings for online gaming in the majority of circumstances? Plenty of folks with ADSL have complaints too :) I envy those that actually get what they pay for :) -Larry "Rob Swindells" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Thanks for the replies guys. As well as Vroc, I'm also thinking of games like half-life. I see people on HL with pings of 50-70, whereas I'm stuck in the 160-180's at very best. Are these people with low pings using cable modem/adsl or are they just closer to the servers? I suppose I could just ask them :) "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:_eur6.99157$[email hidden]...

In the UK, I think most low-pinging gamers are on cable, adsl or ja.net (UK university connection). Cable is most common, ja.net is fastest. I'm basing this on Quake3 gamers, which I played a *lot* of when I had my ja.net connection. I'm just on a modem now :0( Hehe :0) Jim "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Rbyr6.1326$[email hidden]... > Thanks for the replies guys. Thanks. Just tired of getting my ass whooped on HL by the low ping brigade :) "Jim L" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CXyr6.19973$[email hidden]... > > In the UK, I think most low-pinging gamers are on cable, adsl or ja.net(UK > university connection). Simon, I am on Home Highway with BT Internet and I regularly get 50-80 pings on UK servers - both HL and GPL. Actually both my brother and I can play with 50-80 pings at the same time on the shared 64K connection. I have ISDN and normally the top three or four servers on VROC give pings of 50-70. Other servers can be 200+, but presumably that is because they are further away (in terms of hops) or slower. That's the good news I was hoping to hear, thanks for the replies everyone :) Looks like it's time to ditch the analogue modem.
