F1 is like arcade game

Flame warAre modern F1 cars too easy with driver aids?

Kevin Anderson argued that modern F1, with traction control and automatic gearboxes, has become like an arcade game. David G Fisher's claim that F1 drivers are the world's best from a global talent pool sparked another F1-versus-NASCAR flame war. Others pointed out driver aids were limited, discussed how small the real talent pool is, and noted the physical demands on F1 drivers.

I was just thinking how the real F1 has become like an arcade game. Traction control, automatic trans, Do they also have Anti lock brakes?. Pretty soon They will not even need the drivers and it will finally be the type of racing the engineers want. Maybe in the next F1 game they will options to turn off all the driving aids. -- Kevin Anderson [email hidden]

This could be a reason why young drivers with next to no car racing experience can step up to the plate and have instant success. I'll bet it is because the cars are so easy to drive. Like, come on, young kids with ONLY 20 car races under their belt jumps into F1 and has instant success while their previous race car only had 200 or so horsepower and then jumping into a 800+hp f1 car? Something is wrong. I think some teams are using a form of ABS. One good thing is they are getting rid of powersteering, that is a good sign. Guess some of them skinny F1 drivers could have their handsfull for a full length GP. With all the downforce generated by the car it couldn't be too easy to steer.
The best race car drivers in the world are F1 drivers. Only NASCAR fans don't believe that (actually they do, they just refuse to admit it). F1 drivers come from a world wide talent pool of 6 billion people. NASCAR drivers come from one region (south) of one country. I guess if you believe NASCAR drivers are talented, then there must be something really special in the water down there. NASCAR sims are easy and very boring. Turning left is hardly a great skill. How do you know how easy they are to drive? Why do you think 'some teams are using a form of ABS'? If you ever watched a race you'd see brake lockups all the time. Which teams? 'Form of ABS'? Sounds like you're talking crap, Alan. -Nick

Your stereotyping all of us N4 drivers by the actions of 1 or 2? Do you think that's right? Get in a decent league with a good group of drivers, run nose to tail and side by side for about 150 laps, then come back and tell us how easy it is. One thing I love about racing Nascar - no matter how good you think you might be, there'll always be better. Interestingly, I find racing on road courses where the cars get scattered out much easier than on ovals with a good group of drivers. I don't want to just race the track, I want to race the competitors. I don't dislike road courses, or F1, or Cart - heck, I still have GPL on my machine and love it. But for sweat on the eyebrow racing, Nascar is where it's at for me. I get a rush during and after running those races like no other. And btw, whatever league allowed what happened below is not much of a league. There are several good ones out there. -- Don Burnette D Burnette in N4 Some people do nothing wrong. If that were the case then we'd see the field dominated by Asian and Indian drivers, with at least a few blacks as well. The talent pool is NOT drawn from the entire planet, since the specialized and developed driving skills and vehicles necessary are not present in most parts of the world. Just as NASCAR drivers are largely southern with some drivers from other areas of the US, F1 is mainly a European endeavor with some Latin Americans represented (many of whom have European backgrounds themselves).

I said " I THINK some teams..." I didn't say they were using ABS, but wouldn't be surprised if they did. I also didn't say the car were easy to drive but rather said "I'll bet it is" I didn't once say they were easy to drive. I was speculating! I am probably wrong, but I could be right. It is a opinion. ok here is the quote from your message: <startquote> Btw: I wonder where David F got the 'all-mighty' info that detailed this? "The best race car drivers in the world are F1 drivers" &!! "F1 drivers come from a world wide talent pool of 6 billion people." I'd love to hear all the so called expert info with true backup on these comments! hahahahaha!! <endquote> You quote him twice, once on best drivers in world, the other on f1 drivers coming from a talent pool of 6 billion people. But yet then you go to say you want to know where David got this information, as if you are questioning his statement. So you obviously feel that F1 drivers do not come from a world wide talent pool. Maybe you can clarify...I took a stab at it thinking maybe you feel there aren't 6 billion people in the world...or maybe you feel that only 1 billion have any remote chance of being talented racing a car...or maybe you feel that only a few thousand have the talent along with the money and all they need is a little luck. I was under the impression that a lot of those driving aids had been outlawed. As far as I know, power steering has never been allowed in F1, which is why all the drivers have to be extremely fit - those cars generate more G-forces than practically any other kind of car. F1 is extremely technically advanced, and I'd agree that the engineers (and all the rest of the team) deserve a big slice of the credit when theirs cars win, but that isn't to belittle the drivers - they are at the top of their profession. The young guys coming in are extremely good because they are the pick of the crop. Maybe the reason they can get straight in the car and go fast is that a lot of them practice with computer games - Juan Montoya at least is a GPL fan! Quick compare between "EUROPE" and "NASCAR" drivers I put europe between "" because I will include people like villeneuve or montoya which are not europeans at all. It is true that NASCAR is very "closed" to foreigners, CART or indy light (whatever it is called these days) is much more "opened", I have numerous example of "average" european drivers that went to cart successfully and that were not really "top" in F1 or european series (F3, F3000....) You can't argue the fact that Mansell, Zanardi, Montoya were very successful in cart after coming from "European" races, on the other NOBODY ever goes to NASCAR (because they just don't want to accept anybody from the outside) and very few people are coming from CART into F1 with success (villeneuve doesn't count because he "learned" to race in the "European" series. So maybe you can say that F1 although an arcade game is much more difficult to win (not to race) than cart, the last time a TRUE cart pilot came to F1 was M.Andretti, without too muh success, altough bieng in the same team as Senna surely didn't help him to gain confidence, the last US world champion in F1 is Andretti in 78, Cheever did some good stuff in the mid 80's but he obviously wasn't able to beat Prost, Alboreto and other leading drivers of the time. Make any conclusions you want but I think it is easy to overestimate NASCAR drivers because they is no way you can compare them to other drivers, they don't go into other categories and other categories drivers don't come to nascar... One more point about "F1 drivers would be scared about 30-pack races to the last lap", never forget that nascar and cart races are ARTIFICIALLY close, you have yellow flags every 5 minutes (good for commercials on TV) and with "restrictor plate" in nascar it is even closer than that, I don't say it is good or bad, I am just pointing out that US racing is ARTIFICIALLY close for television purposes...the show, always the show... Ok, let the flaming begin

Interesting comments Txl.. The bottom line is 99.9% of us will never get to race "F1, Nascar, Cart, IRL" etc as either we do not have the money nor the talent. Yes we all enjoy sim-computer racing but the real deal in real-life is another matter. I just love all these posts about who does this or that & most of us {yes us!} have never raced in this cailber of racing in real-life. Relax guyzz will ya??!! Phew... <G> Thom_j. They are not easy to drive two or three years ago Tommi Makinen and Mick Doohan were given a drive in the williams and nither of them managed a single lap without spining. Granted that was a few years ago but the cars had more downforce and grip then last years hars that Button drove. Also traction control is not alowed untill later this season, the young drivers are doing so well because they are talented and have been driveing since they could walk. f1 drivers come from a talent pool of about 10000 how many of those 6million actualy start carting by the time they are 10 then get the backing to be competative, then get the backing to get into full size racing in a competative car. Actualy thinking about it it's probably more like 1000. "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:uKRr6.22256$[email hidden]...

BTW David... How are those HANS devices in F1 working out? What's that? They delayed the mandatory use for a year because driver's were not COMFORTABLE using them? I wonder where I read the attack on NASCAR and it's drivers for the exact same reason? Ironic... A higher percentage of NASCAR drivers are wearing the device than F1 drivers, and neither series MANDATES it at this time. Interesting... -- Scott B. Something is wrong. You're right - there's a lot wrong. The main skills for driving a modern F1 car are quick reflexes and stamina. That's why the young, fit guys do so well - the skills of someone like Stirling Moss, lay in other areas; courage, finesse, mastery of oversteer and the art of the 4-wheel drift. Now it's just a matter of timing braking to a fraction of a second and judging corner entry speeds precisely. Traction control and downforce do all the rest. - Michael

I'm not going to flame you. I'm just going to tell you that you're wrong. Take this past week's race at Atlanta for example. 5 cars racing at the end of 500 miles for the win. When did that last happen in F1? And cautions every 5 minutes? There were more during the F1 race than at most Talldega and Daytona WC runs. Again, bias. - Alan

This is what I was asking for clarrification on earlier in my first post when you told me to read YOUR post. YOU quoted David on the talent pool of 6 billion and then you say you would like to know where the info is to backup his comment about a 6 billion person talent pool. My first post was just wondering what part of his statement you disagree with. I suggested that maybe you feel that the world does not have 6 billion people. In my second message, I tried to clarrify what I meant by suggesting you might feel David's statement about a 6 billion person talent pool is false because all 6 billion people don't have an opportunity to race...But yet you change the subject and offer that you didn't say anything about 6 billion people...which is obvious, BUT you quoted him on the 6 billion people and then said his data was false...so please explain why you feel his 6 billion person talent pool is incorrect. I am sorry I had to break it down so much for you. Hope you understand it. Exactly!! Hey, guess I'll just go and have a kickabout with some of my mates down the park. Who knows, I might even be good at it? Then, how about taking a car out for a spin around some track somewhere. Oh shit! I can't! And neither can anyone else that I know of. And it was never on my school curriculum either. Here is a good article, read it. I believe, Frentzen. He doesn't seem to be the type to complain or make a fuss, he hasn't in the past. You decide, do you think there is cheating going on? So, if teams can easily put in traction control then there is a very good possibility they have other driving aids on as well, such as ABS. http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/01formula1/010312a.html "This is very typical for Formula One in particular. And now I give you an unconditional statement, in the past 18 races, I had plenty of opportunity to trail behind Ferrari cars or machinery powered by Ferrari engines. And one thing was particularly remarkable, out of tight corners, these cars had a pretty stunning acceleration, combined with a misfiring engine." The young drivers are not the "pick of the crop" they will just race for less money then say guys from CART or other top notch series. GPL may be a good driving sim but you couldn't use it as a training tool to get into modern day f1. Forget about GP3. ;) -- Solo1 C-Modified (CASC-OR/BARC) http://www.barc-oc.com http://www.casc.on.ca

I had considered posting that same quote earlier but decided against it. Maybe some teams have managed to sneak some form of ABS into their cars, but time and time again I've seen cars locking up and smoking their tires while going into corners. These drivers, at least, don't have the benefit of ABS unless this is part of some clever conspiracy. :-/

I was responding to the claim that ABS is around. Possible? Sure. Likely? Not from what I see on the track.

The when the race proper starts...zoooooom off they go without even a wisp of smoking tire..... ABS brakes....turn it off at a place or two to impress the marshalls that you are locking them up...then compose yourself and drive smoother the rest of the races.<wink wink, nudge nudge> dave henrie

Save up $200,000+ and run a Formula Ford for a season with good results then hire a PR person and a agent to give a F1 team a call and tell them you are a funded driver, You never know. ;) -- Solo1 C-Modified (CASC-OR/BARC) http://www.barc-oc.com http://www.casc.on.ca

The reason that happens is because they intentionally try to create a ton of wheelspin at the start of the parade lap so that they will lay down rubber at their starting box, giving them more grip for the real start. Then during the actual start, they are much more conservative in their application of throttle, which is, of course, a faster way to start. Also, lighting up tires during the practice start heats them up for the race. > ABS brakes....turn it off at a place or two to impress the marshalls that > you are > locking them up...then compose yourself and drive smoother the rest of the > races.<wink wink, nudge nudge> You don't really believe that, do you? You OFTEN see them locking up when they are outbraking each other during a pass. If they had the option to hit a switch and get ABS, they would surely use it in those situations. By the time I could save THAT kind of money, I'd be too *old* to race... :( Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett F1 hcp. +28.67...F2 +151.26... Ummm...maybe race drivers are revheads and enjoy smoking up the tyres? (I would!) Ben Dave Henrie wrote in message <4WAt6.595139$[email hidden]>... >> You don't really believe that, do you? You OFTEN see them locking upwhen

Exactly, I haven't known a single person in my life who ever tried any type of car racing at any level. The talent pool of sim racers might be larger for all I know.
