Haven't seen many posts on using a Pentium 4 with NASCAR 4, so here is
one.
I have Pentium 4 1.4 GHz setup on an Asus P4T motherboard (Enlight
7327A4Z case for anyone interested). VisionTek GeForce2 Ultra AGP
card. 128MB of RAM (upgrading to 384 soon as I can find some decent
prices and availablity)
I had been running N4 with a P3-650, 192MB of RAM, Viper 770 Ultra
32MB AGP...
The frame rates are pretty decent when I tested at Daytona in
800x600x32 in direct3d on the P4 system. I think more important than
the framerates (75 fps going into turn 1, 40s in the front stretch
area) is the fluidness of the controls versus when I was running on
the P3-650. Everything just worked smoother, overall...
I had all the reflections and stuff on, dirt, debris, etc. default
mirror details, 42 cars drawn ahead, default behind. car detail on
medium (detail on high wasn't too bad of a hit though with 26 cars on
the track, which is the only time I tested that setting).
I also ran 1024x768x32 and it was pretty much the same as 800x600x32,
maybe a tad slower in frame rates, but very playable and very fluid.
with a full 42 field and the graphics loaded up, Lowe's and Bristol
were a little bit jumpy, but that was about it. Martinsville was
awesome, except I can't seem to run more than 2-3 laps with a full
field before everyone starts crashing...
On to OpenGL. I found OpenGL 800x600x32 to produce much higher frame
rates and I thought everything was better overall. I haven't tried
other OpenGL modes yet. I just wanted to report on how nice N4 does
play with the Pentium 4 and GeForce2 setup.
Oh yeah, the OS is Windows 2000 Professional. I'm going to try it in
WinMEe, which is what I ran my P3-650 on for N4... if I find
different numbers I'll let everyone know.
If anyone has any specific questions, go for it. I'm no "expert" but
I'm willing to help out anyone with a question.
And please don't slam me for having a P4... somebody went nuts on Don
Burnette and that was kind of stupid I think. I spend my money how I
see fit, just like everyone else. I happen to love racing and it's
cheaper to buy a P4 setup than it is to buy a couple of sets of tires
for a real late model stock car :)

I"m not gonna slam you for having a P4. I might be just a weeeeeee bit
jealous though. <grin>

Well, my wife got the P3-650 as bribery :) She had a P166, so it was
time for an upgrade... now watch, someone is going to slam me cuz I
have 2 computers... (you can't win!)

Don't worry I have the same (2 computers). It was the only way to get my
wife off my "Game" machine. ;-) I use the same bribery/excuse for upgrading
too.

We've got 4 here. I've got the PIII850@910, the kids have a Celeron466
& a Celeron 300a, and the wife has an old P133. I see another upgrade
in my future! <g>

I don't really have a problem with the P4.
I DO have a problem with RAMBUS and Intel Chipsets, though. Price is a big
consideration as well.

What we would all really like to know is a
comparison between the P3-650 and the P4, both using the same video card
(perhaps both of those too). That way, we can isolate how much of the frame
rate hit us due to lack of video card vs. lack of CPU.

Well, I have *3*, so I can't say much. They're all 400mhz or less, though. :(

Well, I had a Viper 770 Ultra AGP on the 650, and used it on the P4
until I got my GeForce card the next day. The frame rates were higher
but I compared Direct3D to Direct3D. OpenGL is awesomely fast on the
GeForce2 Ultra card...
I run a full field with all options on, but world detail set to 0, and
all cars drawn ahead. car detail on medium. 800x600x32 openGL, we
are in the 60-75 fps at Daytona, about 55 fps at Rockingham. With
1024x768x32 OpenGL, it's just a tad bit lower... very playable.
So I feel that the P4 made the game more fluid and playable, but the
GeForce2 Ultra card in OpenGL REALLY made it worthwhile!
The card I purchased was the VisionTek GeForce2 Ultra 64MB DDR
DVII/VGA/TV-Out. I understand the GeForce2MX is a good card too,
though...

You would be correct in that assumtion...
=-Rigs-=
Rigs' Rig:
~46fps on the front stretch at Daytona with 1/2 world, med car/mirrior, 12 ahead,
4 behind
P2/400
Asus P2B
128mb CAS3 SDRAM
Hercules Prophet Geforce2 MX w/32mb & 6.50 Det's
6.3 WD HD, 32x CD
LWFF
WinME
My third is a server... and I have a laptop. so that's technically 4,
but only the 2 are really "used"...
