What can one expect for the same system with a V5 video card? I guess the test is for D3D only. I have read that the test scores are interesting and may help to see if your system is operating OK, but in real game play there could be big differences. Does it help to have all that RAM (512MB)? I thought I had a lot with 384MB. Lutrell "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%0Rs6.133505$[email hidden]...

I have no idea how a Voodoo will come out. Haven't used one for a long time... I'm not sure if 512MB makes much difference or not. Frankly, it was cheap so I bought it :) I have no doubts that almost everyone can bet by with 256MB. -Larry "Lutrell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:eMTs6.7935$[email hidden]... > What can one expect for the same system with a V5 video card? I remember when I got 64MB when most systems had at the most 32, and I was told that it was too much at the time, but it was soon not enough. ; ) Lutrell

Doh!. I just finally downloaded and tried 3DMark 2001 (40MB) also with V5 AGP and got a score of 1961. It looks like V5 does not work well with this test. Strange that there is little difference with 16 or 32 bit and resolution as low as 640x480. How much is the GeForce 3 going to cost? $575 ?? OUCH! I wonder if the price would be lower if 3dfx was still competing. My system: Athlon T-bird 1.2Ghz ASUS A7V with BIOS 1005 384 MB PC133 (cheap stuff) Windows ME , DX8.0a SBLive 45GB IBM Deskstar (ATA 100) 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP ,latest drivers (but they are old anyway) Logitech USB track ball mouse (test would not run with mouse utility turned off) 1024x768 at 16 bit gave score of 1961 Lutrell "Dan Kaps" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:UPVs6.5777$[email hidden]...

For Windows 95, going above 64MB is a waste of time in most cases. Win95 doesn't use it very well. Win98 can utilize effectively up to 128MB. More than 128MB in Win98 would need to be utilized by the application to show improvements. The OS doesn't get much out of >128MB. However, a lot of the games we play certainly can use it, so it's still worth considering. Win2K is another story alltogether. It can use just about anything you throw at it, and it's quite willing to try :) -Larry "Lutrell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:1jUs6.7941$[email hidden]...

Could IRQ sharing with the video card slow it down a little? I had a real hard time sorting out the IRQ's so that my video capture card would work on its own IRQ, and now everything else is sharing. 2299 for mine but with the Geforce2 MX it would not complete some of the test. I'm assuming this is limitations of the card itself and was actually wondering if the Geforce2 GTS would be that much faster? At any rate, this computer still flies so I guess the old saying goes, "Don't fix what isn't broken". hehe Amik On Sun, 18 Mar 2001 18:30:38 -0600, "Lannie Schafroth" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I played with the overclocking of the card and found some stable speeds. The final results were 2505. Increased the core from 130Mhz to 145Mhz and the RAM from 301Mhz to 340Mhz. "Lannie Schafroth" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:993jq5$5os$[email hidden]...

I think Anandtech had an article about it. It seems to be made for new features that DX8.0 supports, and some of those features are not out on video card yet. GeForce 3 is going to have most of the features. Lutrell "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:JLbt6.591096$[email hidden]...

Er, I got 459 on the default settings of 1024 x 768 x 32. My card doesn't support either AA or bumpmapping though, so those tests got missed out. Reducing down to 640 x 480 x 16 managed to up my score to 611. Not too impressive - if anyone has any suggestions as to my best options for upgrading on a *BUDGET* then I'd be more than happy to hear them! :0) Cheers, Jim 3dmark2001 PII-450 cpu Abit BX6 Rev 1 mobo Elsa Erazor III LT TNT2 M64 32MB graphics 128 MB unbranded PC100 RAM "Lannie Schafroth" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:993se5$bmn$[email hidden]...

You're best bet right now is a faster processor. Not too familiar with the BX6, but can't you slap a coppermine or a celeron 2 in there? That shouldn't cost more than ~100. After that you might want to focus on new video card. You can get excellent deals on Voodoo5 cards, but you're out of luck as far as driver support goes. The good news is it works with GPL and N4, so at least you have a strong fall back position. ;) "Jim L" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:EQzt6.11043$[email hidden]... > > Er, I got 459 on the default settings of 1024 x 768 x 32. Now my only question is what's a coppermine? Sorry, I'm new to the cpu game. I suspect it's an Intel chip but don't know what speeds they're available in, and what the max speed I can use is (although I think it's 600 mhz for my BX6 Rev 1) Cheers for your help though Jim > After that you might want to focus on new video card. coppermine is indeed the insider name for an Intel chip. Your bx6 board should be able to get a new bios file that will allow you to upgrade to a much faster cpu than just 600. If you did go to a 600 you'd be already slower than whats needed for some sims...I can't stress this enough...get as much cpu as you can afford...memory, vid cards they all help, but if you have a weak cpu...you are just hamstringing everything else. dave henrie "Jim L" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8NMt6.13345$[email hidden]... > > "Tim Elhajj" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:3ab700e8$[email hidden]... > > You're best bet right now is a faster processor. Scroll down that same page & read the notes for the ID:HV BIOS update dated 01/25/99. It states that clock multipliers up to 8x are supported. 8x100=800Mhz. I'd say she'll take more than 600..... -- Fester

Last years 3D Mark 2000 uses DX7 and will show much higher (maybe even double) on most new systems because it was made to test last years systems that were designed for DX 7.
