Reactions to an elaborate full-size racing simulator cockpit
Colin Harris shared a site selling an expensive full-car racing simulator rig. Posters joked about cost, spelling errors on the site and spouses, and Olav Malmin shared pictures of a full-scale car simulator project.

hmm. Interesting. It is a bit far. <another plug for Chris...> If you
listened to "Track Talk" the other day you would know that thing ain't
nothing compared to what PeriSoft is doing ;-)

On top of that, the makers of that contraption can't spell. Here's hoping
they're better craftsmen than writers.

Really?
Try simming for five hours non-stop while your significant other is
bored. I can guarantee you you'll get hurt pretty bad, even if in a
subtle way :).

Too bad they didn't have a picture of the view through the windshield... If I
had a million bucks, I *might* buy something like that. Then again, I'd be
able to afford the real thing...<sigh>

Because sim tires, parts, and fuel are free.

Wouldn't that be illegal ? If you have a crash think of the unfortunate
person who gets hit by the monitor. I'm all for telecommuting but this *is*
a bit far IMO.

Why sit in a big expensive car lookalike and race on a little monitor
anyway. Set up four or five projectors on three huge screens in front
of the car and two behind, and then it may start to get useful. Of
course, a purpose designed house has to be built :)

neighbours complain? Perhaps the neighbourhood would need redesigning too?

I said build a house, not an apartment :) I've yet to experience
complaining neighbours in a standalone house. Matter of fact, I've yet
to experience complaining neighbours at the apartment i live in now,
even I practice playing the drums once a week with my crap band :)
Take a look at some pictures from the full scale simulator we have at
work: http://www.samf.ntnu.no/kjoresim/pics.htm The text is in
norwegian, but the pictures speaks for themselves. Sadly, GPL's
physics engine is head and shoulders over the Renault made we have here.

I want you to know that this, um, "sim-box" has a value beyond its
initial appearance. I sent the link to my wife, and she has
noticeably backed down from her presiously-held view that I am an N4
addict nut-job who takes this racing thing far too seriously!

But if your millionaire, your neighbour are hopefully quite far from you ;-)

this racing thing far too seriously!
Over the top? That is possible with sim racing????? :)

Y2kRick is the best example of that. His over-the-top realism (he was
always racing on his racing seat WITH a full helmet WITH a full suit) was a
clear indicator of his mental health ;-)

Not too good either. On highways it's probably around the 30's, but in
a city environment with a lot of buildings and stuff it drops to
around 20 or worse.
