Tim Elhajj 23 Mar 2001 15:35 UTC#194248
I'm interested in how many AI opponents people running with and what type of processor their using. I just started racing against the AI now that I have my new machine (1.2g AMD) and was surprised to see a fair amount of chop with 19 opponents, 1024x768, full detail, Glide. For the most part framerate stays at 36, but occasionally everything just freezes for a second. When I turn opponents down, it goes away. Not sure if that much AI is just too much or if something's wrong with my box. I've had problems with my sound card, but I thought I solved it. Input would be appreciated. --Tim

I run against 19 opponents on a PII 333/Voodoo3 at 1024x768. I have the detail slider WAY to the left and a bunch of other options turned down, but I have no frame rate problems. It dips below 30 at the start if I don't qualify at the front, but otherwise stays at 36. With your PC (I assume you have a V3 or V5) you should never have frame rate problems. Are you running anything in the background like ICQ, Task Scheduler, etc.? You should kill all running applications except Explorer and Systray. If you're getting freezing, it could be that something running in the background is stealing CPU cycles and/or accessing the hard drive. I'm not convinced it's a framerate problem. Framerate stays at 36. During the freezes I don't notice a dip in framerate. But it is frustrating. Maybe something is wrong with how I have this box setup. I'm running WinMe and I've got most everything turned off, except 3dfx tools and some little dealy my sound card loads into the background. I can't imagine either of those apps taking up that many CPU cycles. No problems like that on my 1.2 AMD/GF2 GTS machine in D3D/DX8.0. Morgan, what motherboard/chipset are you using? My KT7A is pissing me off with these constant sound snaffus. I ditched the Live for a turtle beach because it was supposedly more compatible with the chipset. But each time I reboot it seems to behave differently. Oiy. I feel like I should have steared clear of VIA. "Morgan V. I run 19 opponents at 1024x768 on a K63-400. But, the detail slider is only about at 25%, and I don't run all the textures. I may drop FPS at the start of a race, but for the most part, it's 30+. KT7A here too. Old Diamond MX300 A3D card with the latest drivers (still the old 2048's). Thanks Morgan! After a few days of struggling, I think I finally got it sorted out. I'm now back with the SBLive and all seems to be working well. Did a race with GPL, all options maxed, and didnt'see any stutter. Did a quick race in N4, full field, all options maxed, 1024. Much better. Apparently I needed to shuffle the sound card around and around until I found a sweet spot. TB goes back to the store tomorrow. It's amazing what a misbehaving sound card can do to system performance! I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out. I tried everything on Paul's unofficial KT7A faq. I ditched WinMe. I scoured the net for other solutions. Worst part was it would seem to be fixed, only to rear it's ugly head in a different game or night. Crossing my fingers that I really do have it licked this time. One thing this experience has taught me is that I probably am too busy (or perhaps impatient) to build my own machines anymore. If I didn't have to worry with the kids, job, wife, etc, I might have been able to figure it out a long time ago. As it is, there's never enough time to try every permutation and so you end up plugging away for during every odd half-hour you can get and it ends up feeling like an eternity. Yuck! "Morgan V. You'd be amazed at what a hosed sound card can do to system performance. I was seeing stuttering in N4 at 640. If there was an accident, forget about it. GPL would only work without stutters with a mere 10 opponents at 1024. Tonight I think I got it fixed, though. <knock on wood> "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > > I run 19 opponents at 1024x768 on a K63-400. "> > Tonight I think I got it fixed, though. <knock on wood> Hey! Leave my head outta this!! Also make sure you are running an up to date set of via drivers. When I first installed my board, one of the files was not included in the driver zip. But with 4.28 that was solved. 4.29 is also supposed to be final now so either of those should be stable. The first day I had fits with getting the system up and running, but now it purrs like a kitten.. Eldred...I read your post above about installation problems...My ONLY guess is your memory jumper switch may be set to the wrong speed...i.e. choosing pc100 setting when you have pc133. This held me up for awhile when I put my box together...good luck. dave henrie

Tim, I am using a Duron 800 and 1024*768 usually 36fps. One thing to check, have you installed the latest VIA drivers (or intel if your board is an intel chipset) installed (http://www.viatech.com) Good Luck Ash "elh4jj" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3abb9b66$[email hidden]... | I'm using the santa cruz card from turtle beach. Yes, I have it sorted out now. I ditched the Santa Cruz and WinMe and now it seems to be working okay. Thanks for the VIA drivers tip. I did install them with this install of W98, I've seen different opinions about using them with WinME, which may have been part of the problem before. On this new W98 install, I tried the Santa Cruz in each of my open PCI slots, but couldn't get rid of a nasty sound artifact (a loud and occasional pop... really a bother when using headphones!) traded the santa cruz for the trusty sblive in pci slot 1 and it worked! After taking so long to get to the bottom of it, I'm dreading adding any new components or installing any new games. Maybe I'll just leave the rest of my 28G of space free and just play GPL and N4. <g> "Ashley McConnell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:99n6tr$9sm$[email hidden]...

For consistent control of the car you *really* need to run at 36fps *all * of the time! And this is *essential* for good on-line racing. I run my Athlon 650 (clocked at 900) at 1000 x 800 and GPL is very stable at 36fps with detail slider about half way and most graphics and some effects (skid marks and smoke) turned *on*. Pc also has 256Mb pc133 ram and V3 2000 card (clocked at 170). I also run my other pc, Celeron 300a (clocked at 450) at 800 x 600 and also maintain a very stable 36fps, with detail slider about 1/3rd and some graphics on, and *no* effects turned on. Pc also has 128Mr pc100 ram and V3 2000 card (clocked at 170) Frame rate is way more important than the games graphics looking good. turn down the graphics detail, turn down the no' of sounds, and turn down the number of AI to ensure you get 36fps. I have this info and lots more on how to optimise your pc for GPL (and other games/sims) on my webpage (no ads or banners), go to: www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html or see url below, and go to the GPL section for more info.... 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html
