I'm in the process of building a new system. Athlon 1.1G, V5 video, etc. I
powered it on - it doesn't work(no bootno display, no beep). I tried the ram
and video in another system, they work fine. That leaves either the system
board or CPU. When I turn on the system, the lights on the keyboard flash,
then go out like normal. After that, hitting capslock or scroll lock don't
turn on the associated lights. The fact that the lights come on in the first
place tells me that the system board is going through at least PART of the
POST, so the CPU is the problem. Does that seem like an accurate assessment?
This pisses me off - I was looking forward to being able to run GP3 and F12K,
and running GPL with all the details on...

New Athlon PC build will not boot
Eldred's new Athlon system would not boot. Suggestions included motherboard shorts from mounting screws, insulating washers or nail polish, fan header requirements and incompatible RAM, but the problem persisted and he began to suspect the CPU.
tech supporthardware: PC/graphics

Make sure your not shorting your mb out with the mounting screws. If you
can, remove the screws and see if it will power up - if so, you have one
shorting out somehow - add each one back in one at a time and try booting
till you find the culprit.
I had this problem when I built my first system, and it about drove me nuts
till I figured out I was shorting the mb.

You can also try booting with just your video card in, if that works then
you may have a conflict somewhere, add your pci cards one at a time and let
windows assign resources individually.

If that doesn't work, then you may have a component mb adapter plugged into
the mb the wrong way. This happaned to me when I built my system, and since
there's nothing to how you exactly which way the plugs to your mb's
component interfaces are supposed to go, I had to use trial and error to
find the right direction on all of these. I'm not talking about the
components that have the harness that plugs into the outlet from the power
supply, but rather the few (CPU, ground, power/reset buttons, etc.) that
plug straight onto the mother board and fit over 2 or 3 prongs. Good luck.
The effort will be worth it!

It does sound to me like something may not be right with the motherboard.
Take a good look and make sure it's mounted correctly. I had one a ways back
that gave me fits getting to boot (just as you describe). Ended up having
something to do with the metal post mount toward the back of the case. I
replaced it and the paper washers and it worked fine. Never did know exactly
what was wrong with that post.
Double and triple check all, if any, jumpers your motherboard has. Could be
CPU related and may be the clocking or voltages have not been set correctly.
Also, make sure the internal speaker is connected correctly. I may be
spitting out POST beep codes and you just can't hear them.
Try and old PCI video card if you have one laying around. Could be the AGP
port. Also, try it without any addin cards in the system.Pull out sound,
game controllers and any other cards you may have in the system.
Last thing I would do is boot it up without a video card and without the
keyboard plugged in. It MUST be spitting POST beep codes at that point.
Hopefully, your motherboard doesn't have on board video.
Well, that was almost the last thing I would try. The absolute last thing I
would try would be to return the motherboard CPU combo back for replacement
parts. ;)

I just built a new system yesterday and I can't believe the difference. I
went from a PII350 with V5 5500 PCI to a 1.2GHZ AMD T-Bird(oc'd to 1333)
and GeForce 2 GTS 64 meg. Haven't re-loaded GPL yet but I did load N4. HOLY
SHIT!! Liquid smooth with all eye candy and full field and draw distance
and mirrors.
You won't be disapointed.
What motherboard do you have? I know on my abit kt7a raid if you don't have
the cpu fan plugged into fan header 1 on the motherboard the system will
shut itself off after 3 or 4 seconds to prevent damage to the cpu. What are
the exact system specs you are trying to put together? This will greatly
help people who are trying to diagnose your problem.Hope this helps. Good
luck.

It did however beep. I also had a problem when the cpu was not fully
seated. What you should do is remove everything including ram and cpu and
powerup and watch its behaviour. If the cpu fans, hds and lights turn on
and it beeps the mobo is probably ok. Triple check your jumper settings
etc, and plug one thing in at a time. You may need to swap parts especially
ram with other machines to find compatible parts.

I have the same board and did exactly the same thing last weekend -
took me 2 hours to figure out (despite the fact the CPU fan was
working)
To the original poster - things like this can be very difficult and
annoying to pin down. You may have to take the whole thing to bits
again (sorry) and carefully reassemble it to simply check and find out
the fault

Hmm...I just pulled all the screws out of the motherboard as Don suggested, and
disconnected all drive cables. I have a startup screen now. Ok, so the mobo

That's the FIC board, no? I d/l'd the manual and printed it off to
study. Let us know what you think of it after you've got it working
and have lived with it for a while. I'm thinking about it and an 800

One problem I had with my KT7A and 1.2 AMD was that a fan *had* to be installed
on FAN1 or the thing refused to boot. I had an awesome fan, but it was hooked
directly to the power supply.

There should be some insulating washers supplied with your motherboard. I've
had a similar experience in the past - I never did really find out what
caused it, I quit when it started working.

I would bet that the short is at the third screw on the underside of the
board. You will probably need in insulation washer on the bottom of the
board at that screw. When I put my new machine together, I used a meter to
measure between the case and all power supply connections for shorts before
turning it on. If you don't have a meter, even the cheap Radidio Schmuck
special will tell you where the problem is. Just put the screws back one at
a time and check resistance after each one.
Good Luck

The way I get around the shorted mounting screws when assembling systems is
to put clear fingernail polish around the mounting holes on the board.

I already used the washers under the screw heads. I had that from the start.
But, the problem even occurs with NO screws in the board.

There's a connection for the CPU fan(which is plugged in). There's another
connection for a seperate fan, but that's marked 'optional'.

It seems like it would be difficult to put the washers UNDER the motherboard.
I mean, it would easy to place the washers on the pillars, but when you install
the board, you'll knock them off... :(
But, this and the posts from Jeff and Dave gave me an idea of something to try.
Thanks.

Most motherboards come with those ring thingies for that purpose (look
like paper ring binder reinforcements).

That's a good idea! It won't affect anything on the board? Hmm...now I just
have to find some fingernail polish(I'm not married<g>).

It's worked for me on a couple of occasions when I built systems based on
the Fic Va-503+ boards which are notourious for shorting out on the mounting
screws. The way I test for this problem is to set the board in the case
with the antistatic bag under the board so it can't ground to the chassis, I
then plug in the floppie drive, hard drive, memory, cpu and a video card and
power the system up. If it runs like this then it's a mounting short and I
break out the nail polish. As always "your mileage may vary"

Well, I tried to insulate the pylons that the mobo rests on. No difference. I
tried another memory module, no good. Both modules I tried work on other
systems. The power supply fan comes on, and the fans on the V5 come on(which
also works in another system). Maybe it's a bad CPU... :(
Problem is, to get the CPU out, I'm have to rip the heat sink/fan off it. It
covers the release lever when it's in place. That's a shitty design, if you
ask me... Grrr...
