How does the multiplayer ratings system work?

I've asked a lot of people, but nobody seems to know exactly how it works. Is it explained someplace? Does anyone know? Thanks. -Tony-

Ah, you must be more specific, Grasshopper!! The N4 manual talks in only the most vague terms about the on-line ranking system. As to what the algorithm is that gives you a certain rating for a certain race, I've seen dozens of people ask in this and other forums and seen absolutely no answers.
