GPL - What does Force Feedback Feel Like

11 posts by 10 people · 05 Apr 2001 19:09 UTC - 07 Apr 2001 00:06 UTC

Like a similar post earlier - I just borrowed a friend's Logitech FF wheel and after enabling FF through the GPL core.ini (on GPL 1.201) file I tried it out and I'm not sure I felt the force feedback or not. I've tried different core.ini settings (from Alison Hine's page for example) and checked some other pages out as well. I don't feel any difference in driving after slamming into a wall at Imola or going over bumps and I never feel the wheel trying to actively fight me when I spin. The wheel works with other games (NFS-PU) and when I start GPL the wheel jerks a little bit leading me to believe it's activated. Any suggestions or testcases would be helpful Cheers,
Gpl works great with my Guillemot FF race wheel but again I use X-Slots info in my core.ini + the applet itself to get the feel I need!! Thom_j. "Nandi, Amit [SKPK:CD60:EXCH]" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

It feels like force, ummmmm, feeding back. A LOT of force if you want. If I set the FF to 100% N4 can make me sore after an hour or so. I'd say that for some reason your force feedback isn't operative at all. I know this is like asking you if you bothered to plug it in, but maybe you should just double check that when you enabled FF it really took. KFG
One thing you must make sure before playing is to make sure you have the 'centering spring' disabled in the controller properties. This migth subdue the force effects when you turn the wheel, and isn't realistic. Another thing to check is to make sure you aren't editing the core.ini.sample file, but core.ini , as Windows has a nasty tendency to hide extensions from you. If that is the case, rename the core.ini.sample file to core.ini. The simplest test is going into a corner so the wheel weighs up, and then slam on the brakes so they lock up. You should have very little resistance when turning the steering wheel with the wheels locked. -Gregor "Nandi, Amit [SKPK:CD60:EXCH]" wrote:

Getting the FF working -perfect- in GPL really takes some time. Read the ff guide on Alison's site, and don't just copy her settings. First of all, make sure your LWFF is configured as device 1 in windows, I and Alison too noticed that the ff is much weaker when you set it on device 2. And then: the values used in the core.ini vary per system, depending apparently on a lot of things like type of LWFF (some versions were made in China, some in Taiwan) and it seems that even these different types of LWFF's require different settings. CPU speed also seems to influence the ff: when I upgraded from a PIII500 to a PIII866 I had to change the core.ini values again to get my old ff back. Read what each of the values does, change a value a little bit at a time and test, test, test. If you get it working right it works like magic, you can absolutely feel what the car is doing. You feel the car pushing and pulling into a corner, feel the car getting light when you jump at Flugplatz, the wheel tightens again when you land.. it's superb. By the way, I remember while experimenting with the ff in GPL, I once copied Alison's settings too to test it. While she has a great ff with her settings, I couldn't feel -anything-. Just shows you how the ff settings vary per system. In N4 the ff seems to be even better inplemented: right after installation the ff feeled perfect. But maybe I was just lucky. Since ff settings seem to vary so heavily per system, every single racing game out there should have the option to tweak the ff. FF in F1RC for examply feels really lousy on my system. Allthough I know for sure the ff in F1RC isn't as good as it is in GPL or N4, maybe it's even worse on my system because I can't tweak the values. Andre
Considering the demo, there's no way you can make FF in F1 RC feel much better, as it's poorly implemented (much as if EA's F1 sims). -Gregor Andre Warringa wrote:

When I experimented with the FF slider, the only difference was how hard the wheel shaked when hitting the kerbs. It felt really weird, subtle FF when driving on the track and heavy oscillation when hitting anything. So hard that I feared of the well beeing of my MSFF. They could at least have a track feedback slider to balance things out a little. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying
I've not read any of the replies to your inquiry, but I'm sure they've told you like I'm going to, that if you couldn't tell whether or not you felt the FF or not, then you don't have things set up correctly. The GPL FF is among the best there is for racing sims, and trust me--when it's set up the right way you'll know. BTW, I also have a Logitech wheel, old version. With FF working, the wheel won't return to center when you turn it. Without FF it will return to center (unless you feel no resistance at all in either way). Bart Westra

Plug it in next time. If the power plug is not connected it just acts like a normal wheel. RB

It seem though that some wheels won't respond to the 'Disable Autocenter' message from DirectInput, so this might not always work. Ruud van Gaal, GPL Rank +53.25 Pencil art : http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/ Free car sim : http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/racer/
