Perhaps more than a few of you remember the GPaL utility for GPL that I was
working on almost two years ago. Unfortunately, way back then I had a job
change that prevented me from bringing the thing to closure. Months passed
and I continued to hope that I'd be able to squeeze in the hours to get it
finished. I never found those hours and don't anticipate finding them.
So what I'd like to do is offer the source code to someone who has the
skills, the time, and the interest in and understanding of GPL to get the
job done. Honestly, I won't have the time to collaborate, but the code is
well-structured and commented so a talented VB6 developer should be able to
make it happen. The project does require a few custom controls (True DBGrid
and VS-OCX if my memory serves me) which you'd need to acquire if you don't
have them already. In addition, I have a FrontPage web site (that I've taken
down) available if that's needed.
Drop me a note describing your background, interest, and experience if
you're interested.
Thanks. I'd really like to see everyone ultimately enjoy GPaL.

Jack Rambo offers GPaL source code for completion
Jack Rambo returned after nearly two years to offer the unfinished GPaL Grand Prix Legends utility's source code to a capable developer. Regulars welcomed him and recalled his Nail That Track race series, while Andre Warringa and others pressed him about his disappearance after announcing a release, and he apologised. He later reported that Paul Thurston had expressed interest in taking it on.
Automated summary.
Hi Jack, I'd be absolutely no help on GPaL, but it's good to hear from you,
I still remember the race series you hosted, it was my first taste of
organized GPL, and I had a blast running it then. Still racin'?

Not much time to race anymore, Ed, but it's certainly nice to hear that you
enjoyed the old Nail That Track (NTT) series. With GPL's automated server
capability, has anyone put together a comparable, daily, intercontinental
series since? Seems like it would be a lot easier today than it was two
years ago! :-)

I would be interested in finishing GPaL.
I have some skills in VB6 (wrote a trackcameraeditor for GPL) but I doubt
that they would be enough for GPaL. I also don't have the custom controls
you mentioned above. Are they downloadable for free somewhere or do I have
to spend some money for them?
However, I think the only way for me to see if I could handle the job is to
have a closer look on the outstanding work. Please send me all the material
you have. I promise that I will handle it with care and if I'm not capable
of finishing it, will delete everything from my HD and give you a clear
status report.
Btw: Great to have you back. I hope that your new job was worth the
r.a.s.-break ;).

Buuuut serious folks. Jack, nice to see you back, and nice you want to
give the source code for GPaL.
But please answer me one burning question: The night GPaL was to be
released, it got delayed because you had a problem with the installer.
Then we never heard from you again.
So the only thing that needs to be fixed now is the installer?
Andre
Hey, Andre, how are you? I must say you have a better memory than I do!
As I recall, I was working at releasing a version that had some of the
functionality completed, had a handful of RASers doing last minute testing
with me, and we had some configuration problems. That was right on the eve
of starting my new job and things never slowed down after that.
Just an installation problem? Not sure without more investigation.

In the NTT World Championship, we had three qualifying races (1 each for the
Far East, Americas, and Europe) at 7:00 AM, 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM EST,
respectively, every weekday. Qualifying race winners and the top point
scorers from each geographic area would be invited to participate in the
weekly international championship event which was held at 8:00 AM EST Sunday
mornings, I believe. Seems like it would be easy to do today with the server
automation available.

Jack is a Legend Eldred, he did NTT before GPL 1.2 with no server cycle
setup to speak of he was there in 3 different timezones every day of the
week. This was before vroc and so it was great to know there was somewhere
to race every night off the week. The only problem for me was living in
Western Australian, meaning the international finals every weekend were very
very early in the morning.
Its funny I always thought it would be ping time that stopped us from
racing together on a world wide platform. GPL showed that was not so and
that 500 ms could be achieved from anywhere in the world to a U.S race
server for good racing. The thing that has stopped true World Series Racing
is the fact that it is always the middle of the night somewhere in the world
and there is nothing worse than getting out of bed at 5am to try and compete
against the best in the world when for some of them it is 5pm in the
Afternoon and their really in tune.
Todd.

Well your disapperance caused a stir on RAS for a while. At one point there
was genuine concern for your well being, which was quickly replaced by the
sweepstake between filming for First Blood part IV or being abducted by

I admire anyone that would expend their time and effort to offer a utility
such as this to the sim racing community - for free nonetheless , but I
think not taking a few seconds out of the day to at least let your brethren
know that your ok, and what is going on, was totally disrespectful.
I hope someone somewhere does pick up the gauntlet and run with it, as it
sure sounded like it would be a great program.

What is the current status of GPaL? Is it correct that only the
installer has to be finished?<<
The version of GPaL that I was set to roll out that night was a subset of
the ultimate functionality that the app would offer. It ran fine on my
machine, but when I got you and some other testers involved, we ran into
problems. I attempted to resolve them but simply ran out of time. To give
you an idea, in the interest of getting it to everyone, I think I got almost
no sleep the night before I started my new job. From that point on, things
really got hairy...
Current state? There are presumably still those install issues that need to
be resolved and there's more functionality to be developed. If the
installation issues are resolved, the app as it exists, offers some useful
functionality: car, car type, driver, track, level, distance category, laps,
and AI strength selections, and GPL launching --- think that what's
currently working --- all in a single screen. Don't know how that compares
to what's out there now.

Who cares? It's history, and a LONG time ago also. It's just a bunch of
0's and 1's posted on a small portion of the Usenet. He tickled some
people, SO?

A year or more ago might have been nicer. There was a time when a man's
word meant something, and even though you certainly owe us nothing it would
have been appropriate to have at least said "I'm very busy and won't be able
to continue". As it is I wish you the best in your racing and online
involvement, but I think that you've really mishandled the GPAL affair. If
you'd been yet another usenet dolt (like some are probably calling me right
now) then I wouldn't have been disappointed.

An explanation was offered in Sept 99 on RAS, albeit ~45 days after I had
said it would be done. I'm sorry that you missed it then and that you missed
my apology above. Gosh, it's good to be back.

My RAS post from 9/22/99 is below (looks like 45 days was actually 60+).
It's one of several in the indicated thread which I started. Until I looked
at this again, I had completely forgotten about the system crash. It took me
weeks to get my system back into "development state" and I was without a
mail client for a while, I believe.
Anyway, getting some good feedback from some "white knights." We'll see how
it goes.
Thanks for welcoming me back.

GPaL...of course.
The question that remains is when. Sometimes life just gets in the way! But
don't start thinking it's never coming until the site goes down. I never
have convinced anyone to foot the bill for the site, you know! ;)
Apologies to everyone for the silence, but the new job and the major system
crash really did bring me to my communicating and developing knees. Nice to
be back in the neighborhood. Haven't slipped into a Lotus in months!
Can somebody give me a synopsis of what's happened in the sim racing world
in the last couple of months?

Man, this post was made that long ago?? When you wrote that you posted
an explanation earlier, I did think about the 'whatever happened to
GPaL' post. I remembered that post so well, because I was just as
surprised to see a post from you as I was with your re-apperance 2
days ago :)
But I'm amazed that that post was made in 99, how time flies.. :)
I forgot about your system crash too. There were rumours that you also
lost (part of) your source code, was that true?

Honestly, Andre, I haven't touched that code since those fateful days in
July '99. I don't recall any code being lost though.
Time does move on, does it not?

Hey, Dave! Nice to hear from you too. Thanks for the NTT note...You were
always a welcome addition to the grid!

Any reason you're looking for a particular developer, rather than just
posting the code?

I enjoyed the NTT races a lot too, in fact I still have replays of

Because then we would get different versions of GPaL.. nah, giving the
code to one developer is a better idea.

Oh yea, Greger, I remember. It was always easy to find you in those
replays...you were always in P1!
And in post-race interviews, you were always very quotable. ;-)
Weren't you going through school last time we talked? How's that going?
Nice to hear from you!

Well, I have some good news to report!
What I'm about to tell you, I'm told, is largely unpublicized, so I'm
revealing this with the express permission of the author.
After initiating this thread, I received an e-mail from Paul Thurston
expressing an interest in GPaL. When we discussed his extensive development
background and he explained that he was involved in the delivery of the
technique for mixing GPL engines and chassis, I knew he had the "tools" and
the interest. Paul went on to explain that he's currently close to beta on a
GPaL-like application that he and a small group have been working on for a
bit now. So I took a look...
With the help of Gary Tall and a handful of other developers and/or testers
(many with names you'd recognize), Paul has developed this little baby
called GEM+ which I think is a real "diamond in the rough." (Okay I'll stop
with the humor.) My assessment: If there is still a need for the
functionality that I built into GPaL, then I think the GPL world will love
this thing. It has essentially all the basic functionality that GPaL had on
tap, and a lot more. One of many inspired things that Paul has done, in
addition to making GPL amazingly customizable, is to make his interface very
customizable itself. So you'll be able to easilly launch whatever you like
from within GEM+. Believe me, it's nice work.
So my bottom line is I think Paul and crew have what you need. I'll be
providing Paul with whatever GPaL code might help, and, if his team's
interested, will assist in whatever way I can...as time permits.
One final note: I'd encourage all of you to respect the facts that 1) Paul
and his team are working hard at bring a quality application that will
further enhance the GPL experience and 2) they have jobs, families, and
lives outside of their efforts to deliver this terriffic new addition. If
you'll do that, I think you'll find that your patience will be richly
rewarded.
Thanks and best of luck to the GEM+ team!
Jack

Why don't you put up a project on sourceforge and let anyone

many shoulders and not have any single person step into your
shoes. He/She might just rturn into the next GPaL mobbing victim...
