Calls for a Papyrus CART sim and licensing

A poster urged Papyrus to make a CART sim and suggested a petition. John Bodin said Midway held CART rights through 2003, while ymenard argued the licence covered only fantasy-style games. Fan projects such as CART2K and CART Heat were pointed to as alternatives.

Let's make a petition! > I am soooooo sick of hearing about this. It will never happen, give it up.
There IS a petition: http://www.champweb.net/ Get over it -- it's NOT going to happen. Midway has the CART license tied up through 2003, and they're not going to do anything for the PC, as far as I can tell. The best you can hope for is the CART2K project from the CHAMPWeb folks and the CART Heat project (http://cartheat.bhmotorsports.com/). And BOTH of those are going to be far better than the LAST major CART sim we saw (i.e., C:PR). -- JB On Tue, 10 Apr 2001 21:13:29 GMT, "Stefano" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Actually, try this: http://headline.gamespot.com/news/99_10/26_vg_cart/ "Midway Games has landed the rights to use the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) license in future racing titles. According to a company release, Midway has secured the exclusive rights to publish fantasy-style CART racing games for all major platforms and for the PC. The agreement runs through 2003." If that's not a good enough source for you, try this one: http://www.cart.shareholder.com/mph/news/19991025-11557.htm Which says: "Under the terms of the agreement, Midway Amusement Games LLC and Midway Home Entertainment Inc., both subsidiaries of Midway Games Inc., have secured the exclusive rights to publish fantasy-style CART racing games for all major video game platforms and the PC market. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed." There's that silly little term again: "Exclusive." The "fantasy-style" verbiage would appear to be a loophole, but the CART folks seem to be oblivious to the difference between a "sim" and any other sort of video game. Go figure. Their loss. Our loss, too, unfortunately. Can you say "CART Heat" and "CART2K"? I knew that you could. ;-) -- JB On Tue, 10 Apr 2001 22:19:01 GMT, [email hidden] (John Bodin) wrote:

I'm curious to see if Papyrus presents anything new at this year's E3. We'll see then if there's another project forming up. -- Philippe "Philster" Sergerie
"John Bodin" <[email hidden]> wrote > Midway has secured the exclusive rights to publish > fantasy-style CART racing games for all major platforms and for the > PC. Exactly, it's not an exclusive deal. The words "fantasy-style" are not there for nothing. It's an license for arcade-type games, not a full license for any kind of CART-related product. Let's remember that at the time they got the license, they even shared it with Papyrus (it ends for them at the end of this year). So it's not exclusive > The "fantasy-style" verbiage would appear to be a loophole, but the > CART folks seem to be oblivious to the difference between a "sim" and > any other sort of video game. Dag John I certainly hope you are correct! btw: does Sierra have any licensee left for Cart as the did have Cart & IndyCar for quite awhile! That would be nice tsee a new 2001 Cart by Papy...eh? <g> Thom_j. "John Bodin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

You know that, and I know that, and everybody browsing this newsgroup knows that, but try convincing the stones in CART's merchandising office that the words "fantasy-style" does NOT mean "fully exclusive." Some savvy lawyer on their staff understands, but to the merchandising people, if it's a video representation of a CART car, it's a "game," plain and simple, and THAT implies "fantasy-style" to them. Trust me on this -- CART is clueless in this respect. >> Can you say "CART Heat" and "CART2K"? I knew that you could. > > >Well, those aren't legal to start with. Hey, someone has to light the fires under corporate America, and what better way to do so than to poke them in the eye and show them that they're missing out on some golden opportunities, and some VERY hungry consumers. Plus, I'm sure CART doesn't care at all -- they've already received their licensing fees from Midway, and our efforts are just free advertising for CART. As for Midway, the last time I checked, they didn't have ANY PC-based games in the works, meaning that they've pretty much abandoned that segment of the gaming market, despite the fact that they DO also own the PC license rights to the CART license. The IRL doesn't care, either -- the IRL Heat effort is just free advertising for them, and we're doing a LOT more for them in tha area than Infogrames is. Infogrames OWN the license to the Indy 500 and the IRL, and they ALSO published NASCAR Heat, but Infogrames has gone on record as stating that they have NO interest in producing add-ons for NASCAR Heat. And here we are producing an IRL add-on and a CART add-on for NASCAR Heat, and it seems like there are a LOT of people who are interested. People have even posted that they've bought NASCAR Heat just for the CART add-on. [Note to Hasbro/Infogrames: Drop me an e-mail so I can give you a forwarding address for the royalty checks.] Not only is Papyrus not paying attention -- neither is anybody else. So, like I said, SOMEBODY has to light the fires under corporate America. - JB
>"John Bodin" <[email hidden]> wrote > You know that, and I know that, and everybody browsing this newsgroup > knows that, but try convincing the stones in CART's merchandising > office that the words "fantasy-style" does NOT mean "fully exclusive." Uh? You seem to talk like you have contacted CART and they answered you. Like I said, the license is NOT exclusive, it's exclusive for a fantasy-style game. Why convince CART? It's *themselves* who agreed to the license. They know at 100% what fantasy-style means, which is not a sim. Anybody who wants to do a CART serious sim can buy the license from CART. Unless you us proof, which I have yet to see. > Well, those aren't legal to start with. > Hey, someone has to light the fires under corporate America, and what > better way to do so than to poke them in the eye and show them that > they're missing out on some golden opportunities, and some VERY hungry > consumers. Of course I agree, but it's still not more legal. Should we care? Probably more when it's a total convertion. 99% of the painted cars for various racing sims are illegal, like about every track. Nobody cares, still. Daytona cared back in the days. But a big thing like a full CART title would surely attract something by CART. Or by Midway. They should take this very carefully. > Not only is Papyrus not paying attention -- neither is anybody else. How do you know? You DON'T know.
