Notable threadGPL 2 wishlist and Papyrus's Randy Cassidy on the team

Fans listed wishes for a GPL 2 such as 1970s cars, pit stops, weather, ghost cars and patches for more visible cars and league tools, while others said poor sales made a sequel unlikely. When a poster claimed GPL's main programmers had left, Papyrus's Randy Cassidy replied that he and Dave Kaemmer, the two main engineers, were still at Papyrus, and that Adam Levesque and John Wheeler had left to form Blue Fang Games.

Hi, In my opion, GPL is the best racing sim ever ! I think it's very difficult to improve GPL, but what are your wishes for GPL 2 ?
I think if we see cars from like 1975 or something... or at least be able to drive cars like the 6 wheeled Tyrrell... drivers like James Hunt and young Niki Lauda.. that sort of thing... some of the tracks would still be there (Nurburgring) and such.. Brands Hatch.. more tracks in a year! maybe a full version of Monza including the banking... I don't think much needs improving over the old GPL.. it's an awesome game.. I guess an improvement on the engine would be nice.. and the faces.. well no comment... at least I think it'd be the start of the "Fire proof Overalls" and "Full Face Helmet" Era... anyway.. just a few ideas... <fluffypony> Ulrich Diedrichsen wrote:

THERE ISN'T GOING TO BE A GPL 2. If you had $10,000 - and you invested $5,000 - only to loose ALL of it - would you invest the remaining $5,000 in exactly the same way. Didn't think so Doug "Ulrich Diedrichsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9avnds$7iv$05$[email hidden]...

If you talking about graphics or sound in GPL I guess you havent got all the addons yet...yes or no? Between all the GPL sites, GPLEA is just one, you have so many upgrades you can do!!! Just ask around. Thom_j. You're probably right, but did you have to be quite so pedantic about it? -We've already been told GPL was no great commercial success many times, thank you. The point is I and many others have a copy and are still enjoying it. I would have liked the authors to have done well off it, but the general concensus is they didn't. Whether this procludes a sequel has neither been officially confirmed or denied. It's unlikely, but I'm sure the programming team would like to do another one if they could somehow sell the idea. Even with this reality check out of the way, I don't think it would hurt anybody to discuss what extra features/improvements/cars/era people would like to see. In absense of a sequel the GPL .exe is eventually going to be hacked beyond recognition, so IMO a little inspiration might be a positive thing. Take a happy pill or something... sheesh!! Sadly Doug, I feel you are right in your concept.. I think in Sierra's eyes the sim/game GPL was a financial flop for them and they will go no further with anymore of a $money$ loss! Many love GPL to death {as I do.} but when it comes to a final decision from Sierra for a GPL2. I don't think it will ever be? Sorry guyz but Sierra will only look at only the $numbers$ gained and alwayz chalk up $dollars$ lost as "old news" aka "a bad venture". "sad but true"........Cheers Thom_j. I would love to see another to Jan V But! yes there is a but below you state:"but I'm sure the programming team would like to do another one" The original programmers for GPL { I may be wrong but I know most who were the original programmers } are long gone.. Actually the two main developers now have their own Co. called "Wolf" something? So as urself I'd love to see another but it would be a new project with new developers.. There are many on in this NG who can verify this & might but many wont say a word..Right? <g> and to be honest I dont blame them..lol Cheers Thom_j. That's a new one to me... You're saying Keammer and Cassidy are no longer working for Papyrus? That would complicate matters as they, obviously, would be legally bound not to use "Papyrus technology" within a certain timeframe... not to mention forming a team of programmers/betatester and finding a publisher. Like I said, unlikely, but using the money argument to attempt to stop a basically harmless discussion just hit all the wrong buttons with me. Jan. =--- Thom j. wrote... > > <snip>

As I said I maybe wrong Randy but I did remember you as one but wasn't there 2 others who were there from the start who started up their own Co. in New England named "Wolf" something? Well, they invested in a R&D project for a new game engine that turned 40,000 sales in the end and put N4 on top of the charts. Not bad! Now why not give us another 5k for a 1982/76/anything sequel ;-P Yeah I know I'm just teasing, GPL2 will only happen in our f dreams. The closest we will go is either an open-source sim or the constant updates to GPL. The thing is, just having a new car physics with let's say 1976 F1's would be enough. With all the quality tracks we have, we wouldn't want anything more. So you have Grand Prix, Advanced Trainee and Trainee, and now you would have hmm "76 Grand Prix" let's say ;-) No need for licensing, just create a basic vintage open-wheel car from the 70's for the physics. Create 5-6 small variants and give it to us. We'll create our own 3do's from that. That wouldn't be much, just a gift to all from Papyrus for it's 15th year anniversary ;) -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.ymenard.com/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimato Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

There is one feature I miss, the ghost car mode. It's not realistic, but I think it would be a big advantage to learning the tracks, and could flatten the learning curve. And make the ghost car start half a second in front, so you're following it, instead of driving inside it. -- -asbjxrn Consultant, n.: An ordinary man a long way from home.
Papy is too late. WSC will not be a program it will be a Car Operating System. It will also have a monopoly just like Windows does. Us business majors call it the Early mover's advantage so if Papy could muster up a GPL 2 it wouldn't have the community support WSC will. You wouldn't be able to race GPL 2 cars against the hundreds of cars that will be available in WSC. Ever tried multitasking in DOS? Fluffy, bookmark this site http://www.noctua.f2s.com/links.html and visit all the GPL graphic addon sites. Visit 'Bruce's stuff' for much-improved faces, new suites, and all kinds of other great updates. (especially his just released Lotus is outstanding). Also visit the GPLEA site, JB Vikings site, GPL Addons site.. with all these updates, you won't reckognize GPL again. Now if someone would be able to make rain in GPL, we -have- our GPL2.. :) Andre

No problem, just add a control to "pull" the ghost back which the player can assign to a button on his controller. That way you can see the ghosts driveing line through all the turns by pulling it back just before each turn. -- -asbjxrn Consultant, n.: An ordinary man a long way from home.
Ok, nice ideas so far, maybe they'll be in WSC. But all I really want from papy these days is a couple simple fixes to improve the overall GPL experience. Yes, I just want another small patch. 1) An official, factory-supported "more cars" patch. IOW, allow us to see more cars ahead and behind than the current 4 & 1. Maybe they could just change it to 6 & 3, or maybe they could make it adjustable so people with different bandwidth could tune their client to suit their needs, and the server would feed them whatever they asked for, up to some limit that the server owner could set. I understand they've increased these for N4, so they have the technology. Please papy, throw us GPL loyalists a bone! 2) Fix the flags. I'm tired of getting blue flags in practice with nobody behind me, then not getting any flag during the race when I'm about to be lapped. This would help a lot. Others? I think those two shouldn't be so hard, and would improve the online experience immensely for me. Marc
> Others? I think those two shouldn't be so hard, and would improve the > online experience immensely for me. > Server based grid order, so the league admin. can set starting order. Would allow for red flag re-starts, prequalifying, reversed grids etc.. Use the existing carNumber parm in the player.ini to help me figure out who's who in a league race. Maybe even put the number on the rear of the gearbox like IRL does so we can tell who we're following (OK purists won't like that but there are more visual queues in real racing then sim). Convex mirrors to make up for lack of peripheral vision, (safer then looking left/right)
I would like to see some kind of skill-testing question to get into a VROC race. Also, anyone who qualified outside the 107% should be automatically kicked. Further, I think that there should be a rev limiter at the start of VROC races which gradually goes away by the end of lap one. Also, nobody should be allowed to quit a VROC race - once the green drops you either keep racing or you have to spectate from the pits (or cold boot your machine). Finally, the game should have a 'rate of closure' sensor: anyone on a collision course with another driver with greater than a 20 KPH speed differential should be kicked. And one more thing. Anyone kicked from a VROC race for committing any of these blunders should be automatically sent to a special VROC chatroom called 'Inconsiderate Asshole Purgatory for No-Skill Chumps'. That's for starters.. Simon
Classifying slower drivers as "inconsiderate assholes" is pretty inconsiderate in itself... If you think you're too good to race with the plebs, join the SRM or something. Jan. =--- Sympatico News wrote... > <snip>

Not with the existng collision detection as it stands. We have all crashed, burnt and been pitched hundreds of feet into the air after 30 mph collisions. This is just what I have done... And what has happened: Once I went to Zandy, qualified last, when I tried to get to the staring grid, I saw a flash of me there. Then the screen went black and my Ferrari was still screaming. Another time I went to Smogbank, lousy qualifying, then chatting with the host. And when I pushed the green button to get to the starting grid: Black screen and screaming Ferrari. Both times nothing else helped than to reset the computer... But anyhow, I am nearly there: even practising with real GPL drivers was great... Arto
