Controllers for Superbike 2001

Players discussed Superbike 2001's realistic physics and photorealistic visuals. Debate centred on the best controller, with joysticks generally preferred over wheels for leaning, and discussion of analog throttle and real motorcycle countersteering.

I'm a cycle fan and wondered if anyone is playing SBK2001 on this group? I just ran my first successful online game with it last night. It's quite the game. When the realism is on full, it's pretty much like actual racing. Good physics. My only problem is that I can't get my Miscorosft USB controller to assign the throttle slider to the Accelerate command. I've tried everything and I've had this problem in other games, but once I calibrate the joystick in those games, it worked. SBK2001 uses the calibration from the control panel and that doesn't seem to work with this game even though the test lights confirm it's working properly! Any of you serious Sim-Guys have a clue? I have a couple reports into Microsoft AND EA, but no word back yet. Thanks Ed
Yup,Nice sim/Game.PhotoRealistic(in setup)!!!! Wow!!Plus all bikes and tracks to boot. Even a k6 500 will run it well(with a Voodoo 4 card). Jody Not made in China! I just bought it last week. I definitely need a different controller for it. Using a wheel for a bike sim just doesn't cut it. Are joysticks better(or even a gamepad)? If I could drive(ride) the thing better, I might try an online race... Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett F1 hcp. +28.67...F2 +151.26... I find an FF stick works (needs a touch of centering spring)... but that's about it. This is the only part where this sim really falls down... really difficult to control. Can't bring myself to use a wheel either, it's just all wrong. Let me know when you're planning the online bit... we'll fall off repeatedly together. ;-) Jan. =--- EldredP wrote...

You could fork out the dough for a dedicated bike controller too. There is/was one available, but don't know the price.

I need to find a joystick that has the gas and brake buttons on the base, not the stick itself. I can't use the buttons on the stick, nor can I use the foward axis for gas/brake. I'm not that coordinated... At one time, I had a great joystick - a Gravis Exterminator, I believe. 2 buttons on the base, one on the top of the joystick. Simple, yet functional. But, they don't even MAKE them anymore... :( Eldred p.s. About 30 bucks, USB, good build quality, and pretty comfortable and precise- and it has buttons on the base.

Considering how little I play bike sims, buying a dedicated controller wouldn't be a good financial decision.<g> Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett F1 hcp. +28.67...F2 +151.26... Sure... the controller will just reside on the next available "ID". That is to say that will work with SBK2001, some games require the controller to reside on ID1, but the beauty is you can switch those around in the Game Controllers applet, i.e. in software. Problem with using buttons for speed and brakes is that it is either on or off. I just tried it and it is best to use the default of forward for gas and back for brakes. I know it is a bit awkward to steer at the same time, but for bike sims it is the best you can do unless you buy a dedicated bike controller. Problem with these bike sims is that the only way to turn is by leaning, well a real bike you can lean and turn the wheel so in the sim it makes sharp corners a bitch because you can't tunr the wheel. Just takes lots of practise I guess. Sure wish there was a good F1 sim with this graphics engine. It's sweet.

Your bike has a steering wheel?? Seriously, "steering" a motorbike, even at slow speeds is a bad habit (unless you're manouvering while you have a foot down), for you might be tempted to try it at speed as well, which might have disasterous results. If you apply pure steering at speed the bike will actually go the other (wrong) way, an effect called countersteering. The position of the handlebars or clip-ons should follow naturally from leaning the bike at anything more than walking pace. Driving at slow speed in SBK2001 is a major pain, I agree. It requires delicate control of both lean angle and throttle (not particularly good at it myself), which is indeed hard when mapping these actions to the stick axis. This is the most frustrating thing about bike sims... what comes so naturally and easy on the real thing is very hard in the game. Even just toodling along is really hard... then again, stuffing it on a real superbike would cost real money and hurt real bad, so I can live with that. On a real bike you would just give a slight steering input and lean into it on a sharp bend. It's not all just leaning into a corner to navigate a corner. I know that much from just riding bicycles, and so should you. :-)

Yea, it's a bit awkward, but I'm starting to get used to it already. Qualifying with the back of the pack at least now. This game is amazing with stereoscopic glasses on. I *really* want an F1 sim that looks as good as this. Here's hoping EA's next F1 sim is just that. Maybe F1RC will be good after the patch and then I will have what I want.

I had a vision of you trying to stay somewhat upright by really steering the bike... like first-timers when they attempt a slalom. Jan. =---

No, I was a mountain biker for years so know a bit about bikes. Just not ones with motors. BTW, I switched from joystick to MSPP wheel and my times have increased rapidly. Even qualified in 1st on one round. I think that detent at the centre position on the MSPP is finally paying off. Using a stick for acceleration/brakes/steering is too awkward.
Was anyone tried one of those motion sencing game pads? I think Microsoft has one in its Sidewinder line. This would be my best guess for a bike sim. I have a friend that uses one with Motocross Madness, but thats not a good game to "test" it on. MadDAWG
I use to race Dirt Motorcycles Professionally and road raced at times. I feel a good FF joystick works great in SBK2001.. Also don't take MM2 lightly either!! Try their SuperCross & their other 'genres' to see how hard it really is & no cheating now!.. <g> It surprised me!......Cheers Thom_j. Yea, that would probably be really good for steering, but there is no analog throttle/brake control on a game pad. Gas/brake either on/off is bad. If you can use your analog pedals and the pad at the same time I expect it would be the ultimate setup for a bike sim.
If I remeber right it had a roller on it, but I can't swear to it. That still wouldn't do anything for the braking unless you did it as combined axis with the gas MadDAWG
