Chain email urging a fuel company boycott

A poster forwarded a chain email urging motorists to boycott certain fuel companies to bring petrol prices down. Others explained that most of the price in Europe is tax and that boycotts would not work. Posters compared fuel prices around the world and discussed peak oil.

Hi all this is an idea that has just been e-mailed to me; See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.

The oil 'market' isn't a normal open buyer's market and is, effectively, controlled by a (in virtually all other circumstances illegal) cartel - OPEC - who are, at the moment, strangling production. That's why prices are high. Plus the petrol forecourts don't actually make that much money for the oil companies - not enough to worry about a car user boycott anyway, however effective it appears to be in emptying forecourts. Cheers, Probert.

Fuel prices are that high because of all the taxes. Here in The Netherlands around 70% of the price is taxes ... oil companies can't do anything about that.

This has been doing the rounds for a while now... I've had at least a dozen e-mails repeating this word-for-word. Totally pointless, will have no effect whatsoever, since the bulk of the price per litre in the UK goes to ther government.

I'd let Shell off the hook because they are the only place in the UK to get 98RON fuel, BP and Esso are 97RON, I wouldn't even want to guess about the crap you get at supermarkets. The RenaultSport Clio, uh, *strongly recommends* 98RON, and it makes a difference...

Between 60 and 70% of what we pay per litre of petrol is tax. Petrol stations would suffer if this scheme were adhered to, yet they make virtually no profit from petrol sales. So, not a very good idea, methinks. Doc >

I think that everyone should hold their breath until gas prices drop to 1999 prices. The oil companies will obviously give everyone cheap gas when the dead bodies start piling up at the filling stations.

Its damn difficult to boycot BP in Scotland since Shell get their stuff from Grangemouth.(Excluding Optimax) Don't know where Esso get their stuff from here but theres Gulf, Texaco and "Save" as well, but its akin to putting water in your tank. My car recomends 97RON fuel, but to be honest i don't notice the difference between 95RON, Optimax, BP Advance or Super Unleaded though I shoudl be running it on 4 star and haven't been using additive and haven't bothered swapping the head for one i took off my old car which i know is set up for lead free fuel. $1.13/L Canadian here, that's $0.84 US. I expect it will go much higher until they finally find a price that people won't pay, and then they will drop it 5 cents...
Andrew MacPherson wrote: > (...) > especially as you use the same amount of electricity no matter how fast > you drive. Actually, you use a fixed amount of electricity *per unit time* you drive (OK, the BRM sounds louder, so the sound card could suck a little more electricity, but we'll neglect that). So, slower cars/drivers needing more time to cover the race distance actually do use more electricity per virtual mile. Regards, Mr. "poor mileage" Sylvestre (GPLrank in the + sixties)

Well I'm not sure that's not right, I'm almost certain I paid less per litre when I filled up a car in Holland on Friday compared to filling up my own car in the UK on Saturday. Maybe it was a diesel car though. In fact, this suggests it probably was: http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/fuel/ -- [ste] "Calling a player who needs a lot of persuasion to stay at the club 'loyal' is as silly as saying someone who needs to be coaxed out of jumping off a building 'loves life'" F365 letters.

The worst thing about this way of doing it is that it is the only way... This world needs more gas than ever, and the production is declining... You can blame taxes, gas companies, OPEC, whoever you want, prices won't stop rising. And at one point economies will collapse. And the non-oil-dependant industries will remain untouched by the collapse. I think it would be a good idea to invest in non-oil-dependant industries right now. Who can tell when things will collapse. I don't even know if "collapsing" is such a bad thing anyway, since our western economies are built on exploitation of this planet and it's inhabitants in every possible way. ---A--- On 20.08.2005 13:13, Gas Warrior UK wrote: > Doc Knutsen <[email hidden]> wrote in message: > news:<[email hidden]> > I think that everyone should hold their breath until gas prices drop to 1999 > prices. Yes, and as well I suggest to: _ Stop buying consoles from sony and microsoft _ Stop buying cars from the 2 biggest car manufacturer _ Stop buying hot dogs from 2 biggest hot dogs brands _ Stop talking to ugly/average looking women, and even if they are pretty talk to them only when they go to the beach Then: Every thing will be cheap: hot dogs will cost 1p, xbox 360 and PS3 5 ( 4 for the revolution) with 1 for a game, the fatest cars for no more than100 , and on top of that, all women will turn gorgeous (subscription to the gym will be very cheap by then) and will always wear bikinis. I am suprised nobody thought about that earlier... The only problem I can think of is that with hot dogs and chocolate bars so cheap, the effect on women may be not what we expect. Ant.
