It sometimes seems to me that some of the people in this newsgroup are anal obsessive cynics who always see the glass as half empty instead of half full when it comes to any new racing sims. Some extremist GPL fanatics have already declared that their will never ever ever be another sim as good as GPL, which renders their opinions pretty worthless given such a predisposition toward negativity . Although , I guess if a new game were to ever come out that (ymenard) and company actually gave rave reviews, it would have to be pretty awesome, but I think it will be a cold day in you know where before that happens. Anyways, I was thinking about some of the new games that have come out in the last year or so, and I was wondering which ones other people have actually thought were fun. I am not asking you whether you thought the game was extremely accurate as a sim, or was revolutionary, or was nearly flawless , or even lived up to your expectations and anticipations. I would like to know which games were fun for you , warts and all. here is a list of games that I had fun playing, many of which I would never have been aware of had I not heard at least a few positive comments from the more objective voices in this newsgroup. I greatly appreciate those newsgroup participants who seem to be on top of any breaking news on whats going on in the sim racing world. 1. Mercedes Benz Truck Racing 2. Screamer 4X4 3. Motocross madness 2 4. Nascar 4 5. Nascar Heat 6.RallyMasters 7. ATV Offroad Fury PS2 All of these games made me smile at some point and think, " this is so much fun, I love videogames ".

1. Nascar 4 2. GP3 3. CMR2 I don't have them all, but of the ones that I do have, I enjoy these the most. If GP3 had solid netplay, it would possibly be at the top. Alanb

Thats because until they release a patch for the two hydraulic control levers, it can't REALLY be classified as a sim. dave henrie

<more "objective negativity" clipped> >1. Mercedes Benz Truck Racing Perhaps you haven't noticed YMenard giving rave reviews to MBTR? Methinks some "objective" folks have their blinkers on a bit too tight as well. :) To your list I'd add: * NFS:Porsche Unleashed/Porsche 2000 * 1NSANE To get back to your original rant, though, each of these games are usually good for 3-4 weeks, then I get bored and go back to (do I have to say it?). (Actually, not really "go back", since I usually don't stop driving "you know what" completely.) :) "But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

And they really used 2000 models. I HATE when they do that. John Deere puts the decals in a slightly different place in 2001. KFG

It's refreshing to see that there are games other than GPL that you like at least a little bit, and I was unaware of your having given Mercedes racing high marks in the past. As far as ATV Offroad Fury is concerned, while it is admittedly somewhat more arcade than sim, your comments about it having an abundance of jaggies, I don't quite see, so to speak. I thought maybe I had overlooked them in the midst of having so much fun playing this game, so I popped the game into my PS2 just to look for the extreme level of jaggies I might have missed. Ironically, this seems ,to my eyes at least, to be one of the few PS2 games that has very few jaggies. Many PS2 games have far more jaggies than even most Dreamcast games, but ATV Fury is not one of them. If you sit 2 feet from a 27" tv screen and look at a still image of the game , you can find some jaggies here and there on track objects, but when the game is in motion even those jaggies are hard to see unless you are looking for them. Also, the TV at normal viewing distances tends to blur jaggies for all but the worst of games. Maybe you are refering to screen captures present on the internet, which often make even most PC games look worse than they do when the game is in motion.

I have bought a whole fistful of race sims in the last 12 months. Looking at the CD rack beside my monitor 22 race sims of differing quality in my collection. Of those a dozen or so were bought in the last 12 months. From these titles, 3 really stand out. They are: 1. Nascar 4 I have only had this for 4 weeks or so and it has already become a firm favourite. It is definitely holding its own against the previous king of sims, GPL. In fact, in the last week I have driven N4 way more than GPL. Perhaps this is a sign that I needed a break from GPL but it certainly shows the quality of N4. Online racing is excellent. I never thought driving around in a circle could be so challenging. 2. Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing MBTR has that killer combination of great physics and great eye candy. It really is an excellent sim with that intangeable "certain something" that makes you want to go back to it time and again. Perhaps it is the challenge of the driving model, to know that the reason you are slow is because you aren;t driving correctly and that if you learn how to drive things will improve. Whatever it is, this was the best race sim released in the year 2000. 3. Superbike 2001 SBK2001 is another fine sim. It has the best graphics of any PC program I have experienced. The track models are fantastic and the game engine gives excellent framerates. Above all the racing is fun.
