Thanks to r.a.s I have managed to get nearer and nearer to GPL on-line racing: Now I even can join races, but when I try to get from Practice to the pits, my screen becomes black and my Ferrari is screaming. Whole system stops working. Nothing else than resetting helps. And then of course the race is gone, even when the VROC tells me it is recovering (in the startup). I have run the gpldiscofix. Could the cause be that I have just stopped the car, not _driven_ to the pits? But the system should not lock even then? Thanks in advence... Arto PS I usually also get blinking screen when coming to the pits page off-line. But no locking there... (I use GF2 GTS, in D3D, if that matters)
Do you use ZoneAlarm? This is exactly what it does to me if I leave it running while online in GPL. Apparently there are ways to make ZA play nice with GPL but I've never been able to make them work so I just shut it off while online in GPL (shhh don't tell any hackers!). Good guess! Yes, I use ZoneAlarm! But isn't it funny: I can race on-line with N4, both with the Sierra Connection and private ip's, but GPL-VROC doesn't work! What does this combination VROC-GPL wants to do, what N4 doesn't? And why? Arto
As I understand it, the problem is that ZA wants to pop up and ask you if it's OK for GPL to access the Internet. But that little popup hangs the system because GPL can't switch video modes. The solution is supposed to be to run GPL in software mode, let ZA get all the answers it wants, then switch back to hardware mode. I've never tried this - the FPS hit that ZA has on Unreal Tournament indicates to me it would get in GPL's way too, and I can't afford to give up any more CPU cycles. So I just remember to always shut down ZA before joining a VROC race. It works in N4 because N4 came out AFTER ZoneAlarm, so Papy probably wrote their network code to deal with this type of problem. I've heard other software firewalls don't have this problem with GPL/VROC but I have no personal experience. I was going to say what Rob Adams has said :-) -- Cheers Ginger.......................(GPL, Bowt NetterToDo) "Arto Wikla" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:wikla.987442602@kanasaari... > Thanks to r.a.s I have managed to get nearer and nearer to > GPL on-line racing: Now I even can join races, but when I > try to get from Practice to the pits, my screen becomes > black and my Ferrari is screaming. And I can give certain licences to GPL and VROC: allow connect to the Internet, allow server, pass lock. And when I have given those, I have been able to take part to the Practice, chat, ... Last time I told to the host of the race that when I'll push the green, my PC propably will lock up. And so it did. And also made some harm to my screen settings... By the way, you somebody from New York hosting a Smogbank race half an hour ago: You were really driving fast with your Brabham at the Practice! I had my Ferrari gears as fast as possible, and you were driving around me! If you happen to read this, I'm sorry my PC went down... >It works in N4 because N4 came out AFTER ZoneAlarm, so Papy probably wrote >their network code to deal with this type of problem. I hope GPL 1.3 will copy the network code from N4! Arto
Your best bet is to either get the pay version of ZoneAlarm (some have said it works) or get a different software firewall. I have stopped using it, and now use a hardware firewall. SLG [email hidden] (Arto Wikla) wrote:
