Hi all..this is a question about settings. Due to the quality of these
wheels steering and handling in GPL is affected by even the smallest of
changes. Lately I have been playing all around with steering ratios and
linearity (dead zones also).'
How do you have your TSW set up within GPL? Linearity? Steering ratios? A
dead zone tweak perhaps? Steering hack? Just my own informal poll while the
daily tweaking in the sim garages roll on.
Thanks...
Dave C.
I used to use the steering hack, but I found I couldn't get through most
hairpins...though it makes your starts a ton easier. I would try to get
used to full linear steering...it gives you the quickest reaction when you
are in trouble (dodging cars, catching spins). I use no deadzone tweaks
with my wheel...I have found that GPL pretty much gets rid of the deadzone
so I don't worry about it...and for steering ratios, depending on the track
I generally run 15:1-17:1. Lower at tracks like the glen and mexico, higher
at monza and the likes.
BTW I have a TSW2 with paddle shifters and a momo large yoke wheel.

I have full linearity (ie. all the way to the left).
It's quite sensitive on the straights, but that doesn't really matter - it
helps in the corners, and that's where you need the control!

So you end up swerving down the straights... I have mine about an inch from
full linear, and I had to change the steering ratio just to keep it together on
the straights.

I don't use any tweaks or the GPL steering hack. I've got my linearity
almost full linear (about 1/4" from full) and usually run steering ratios
around 14:1 to 16:1.

It's not that bad!
The thing is that the TSW wheel is so smooth that it's possible to make tiny
corrections without getting stiction, so it doesn't matter if the steering
is very sensitive down the straight.
It's a bit like using a joystick: you just have to "think" the car left or
right a bit! ;-)

For me, it IS that bad. I've downloaded many setups that have a steering ratio
of 15:1, or even 14:1. I've found that I have to raise it to 18:1 or I can't
go straight. I've never figured out how people can drive the lower ratio... :(
In another discussion someone mentioned that even though my computer got 36fps,
I could be driving slightly 'behind' the car because I was running a 400mhz.
Well, I finally got a faster computer to work, but I haven't turned many laps
in GPL yet. We'll see what happens this weekend. From my preliminary tests, I
don't think the 1.2ghz will help, and THAT'S gonna piss me off... :(

But seriously, you should consider a new wheel as well as the new PC. If
you're having trouble on the straights it could be a sign that that old
wheel is getting near the end. I can drive the straights one-handed or even
no-handed with my LWFF.

Are you using a TSW?
Maybe there is a problem with the pots: if they have gone a bit ropey,
and/or you don't have a very good game card, you could get twitching which
would mess up the steering if it's very sensitive.
You can easily check this by turning on the drivers arms within the cockpit.

New wheel? I have a TSW2mod that's only about a year old. I really don't
think I can blame the wheel...

Yes, I have a TSW. The twitchiness has been around for a long time. Even when
the pots were ROCK solid, I still couldn't drive a 15:1 ratio car...
I think I *do* need to clean/replace the steering pot, though. I'm just not
looking to tearing the thing apart... :(
