The heading says it all. And if so how does it run , much better or worse
than a P3 1000 or a AMD Thunderbird 1200 ? Any problems with certain video
cards or sound cards ?
I am just about to get a new system so I am just wondering what would be
best to get atm. P4 1.7 , P3 1000 , or AMD Thunderbird. I will probably go
with the GF2 Ultra GTS 64mb video card and Soundblaster Live sound card so
the CPU is my only stumbling block atm.
Sid.
GPL running perfect.(as are all other games)
P4-1400
GF2 64mb Ultra
.....nice
Morgan Boof
Not as nice as a Athlon 'Axia' OC'd at 1.5 gig with an Ultra... Yum Yum

Oh,.... is a Athlon a P4 ?..............seems that was the question.

Well, I don't think I'm a zealot as I've got both an Intel and AMD PC.
I have no compatibility problems with either. From the reviews I've read
however, the AMD does outperform the equivalent Intel chip. I can't make a
direct comparison between my PCs because they run different speed CPUs.
AMD Athlon 750 and Intel Celeron 466.

One thing to keep in mind... the current P4 motherboards require Rambus RAM.
Nothing wrong with that as it provides excellent memory bandwidth. But it
appears that the industry is moving away from Rambus to DDR RAM. I've heard
that even Intel will be moving to DDR RAM for future P4's. So in the
future rambus RAM may be difficult to find and expensive. If you buy a P4,
get all the RAM you will ever need for that motherboard. I'd recommend a
minimum of 256 megabytes. Especially if you plan on running Windows XP.

I would say that
the Athlon
would have a slight edge with it's better Floating point unit, but it's not
going to make
that much difference. All of the CPU's listed will run GPL without even
breaking a sweat.
I have an AMD 1200 with a 266 bus, no problems.

I currently have a Celeron 466 in one machine and a Duron 850 in my
other machine. The Duron very stable and I have never had a
compatibility problem. In fact I've never come across anyone who
could actually produce a compatibility problem for an AMD product. At
least not in the last few years.
Sounds like you have been listening to a lot of Intel propaganda.

With the caveat that P4's with RAMBUS only run faster with apps
speciffically developed for them. GPL will run slower. Not that you'ld be
able to TELL with that system. As fast as possible is always fast enough.
I just recently replaced every box in my house. Until that time I hadn't
used any CPU other than Intel for over a decade. There isn't an Intel CPU in
my house at the moment. I got more bang for my buck, with greater speed and
stability, from AMD.
If we wern't talking a gaming machine here I might feel otherwise. An Intel
board with integrated sound and video is a pretty sweet system for running
business machine.
If we're talking GPL as the primary app to optimize for I don't think
there's any question that you'll get the best performance from the AMD
though.

btw my quick search of Deja indicated that a most compatibility
problems had nothing to do with the chip but had to do with the
motherboard. Morale of the story? Don't go cheap on the motherboard.
Thanks guys for your help. Helps me make an informed decision now :)
