There just has to be a setup like mine running GPL successfully...
AMD 1.2
Abit KT7-R (no Raid)
256 mb
LeadTek GF2 Ultra - D3 7.58 driver
SB Live value
Win 2K
Installs fine but when starting the intro screen pops up for about a
1/2 second then back to the desktop. I know the secret to success is
in app.ini and/or core.ini file. A guy has the same issue a couple
posts back. Tried both full and partial install... Straight up and
patch 1.2 applied...Both the D3D and OGL (modifying the core.ini
and app.ini per the readme)...and nunthin'
One would think even choosing the software renderer during install
would at least load the game further then a 1/2 second of splash
screen!
There has to be something I'm overlooking...Any and all advice
appreciated.

Check out the GeForce FAQ at http://www.geforcefaq.com/ and maybe you could
try the last official driver release from nVidia (6.50 for Win2K). Also,
since the game won't work with the software renderer, that suggests it could
be something other than the GF2, like maybe the Live. Creative's Win2K Live
drivers have a bad reputation. Is it possible to disable the sound card and
try GPL without it?

Thanks for the tips however been there done that. Tried Nvidia 6.50,
7.58, 10.80 and 11.01 drivers. Suffered thru the trials and
tribulations of Creative drivers, am having good luck currently with
the generic Win 2K drivers. Honestly, I appreciate your input. It's
frustrating though finally getting around to building a PC that will
run GPL, but now it won't. N4, 65 fps all day long with a full
field... RC 2000 not nary a flicker with the settings maxed out...GPL,
I see a 1/2 second of the splash screen...ARGHHH!

Thanks for your insight. I'm going to keep pluggin' along till
something comes along. I'm convinced it can be done.

I'm running GPL on win2000 on 2 PCs, 1 is a celeron 466 with a V3 3000 and
SB PCI card 128MB RAM, the other is an Athlon 750 with V4 4500 and an SB
Live 1024 with the latest drivers.
All I can say is that GPL will run in Win2000, but it can take a bit of
persuading.
Are you using NTFS or FAT32 ? some people havereported problems getting GPL
to run with NTFS, though my celeron system is NTFS.
If all else fails, maybe you could use a dual boot system, 98 for games and
win2k for all the other stuff.

I assure you it can be done. I gather my ini files didn't help you.
What about reinstalling w2k? A desperate measure, to be sure, but one
that might work. NTFS isn't your problem, and neither is the video card.
I run 2k sp1 with nVidia GeForce2 GTS, dual 800 PIIIs, 768 MB rdram, and
ultra 160 scsi. Sound is Crystal SoundFusion. Don't even think of installing
Windows 98 on your box. I run Windows Me on a 1.4 P4, and it's slower than
the dual 800.
Have you tried removing the sound card?

How can you be so sure? Straight after installing Win2K I try GPL in
software mode and it doesn't work. Same thing exactly on my other machine.
NTFS and FAT32 both do the same, any number of drivers / patches / whatever
don't seem to make any difference whatsoever.

I am back running Win98 now, everything runs fine, especially GPL!!
I've run GPL for the past year on Win2K Advanced Server with a PIII@765Mhz,
256mb ram, IDE hardware raid 0, SBlive, GeForce DDR (currently with 7.58
drivers) and NTFS. GPL does run very well on Win2K and a lot better than ME.
I did get the same problem as you for a short while but it stopped of it's
own accord. Because I am constanly tweaking and fiddling about it could have
been any one of a number of things which fixed it.
However it only ever happened when the desktop was in 32bit, all I had to do
was swap to 16bit and run GPL again.
You could try switching off as many services as possible and end any
programs you have in the background which may help.
Here's my core.ini if that helps.

Hopefully with some fiddling you should be up and running with some minor

Yup... I have it running on P3-600, V3 3k PCI, Win2k... but having problems
with sound. I.e. sometimes GPL goes silent while driving and I have to
restart the game to get the sounds back. No probs under Win98.
I got GPL to run on Win2k after installing GPL first under Win98 on the same
machine, then applying the latest patches (1.2.0.1 + Glide2x patch). After
that I renamed the GPL directory (c:\sierra -> c:\sierra.bak) and installed
the game under Win2k to c:\sierra. Then I deleted the c:\sierra directory
and renamed c:\sierra.bak back to c:\sierra... a bit complicated, but now I
can run GPL from both systems using the same installation :)
