Flame warDriven review thread turns into film-taste flame war
A link to a Planet F1 review of Stallone's Driven led to debate over whether race fans should see it, with some finding it fun and others saying it was bad. The thread then turned into a long insult-filled argument started by 'Nos' over intellect, mass taste and Judge Dredd; he later admitted he was winding people up. It ended with lists of favourite films of 2000.

But read some user reviews on www.imdb.com - the 'average' crowd seems
to love it..

A cult classic in the same mold as "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

Yeah, but r.a.s isn't exactly the average crowd. Or is it? ;-)
I haven't seen it yet(but I do have an almost free coupon to use/waste)
so I may. But most of the interviews I've seen has Sly focusing on
attracting or gaining interest from Non-racers. As such, we may think it
silly, trite, condecending etc. But that is just what will grab a 'non-fan'
and possibly pull him in. So IF Stallone was targeting this non-fan as the
primary viewer of the film, it seems he suceeded.

Or is it? ;-)Serious racers will pick this movie apart and probably not like it. I didn't
notice a single one of the nitpicks in the Planet-F1 review but I wasn't there
to analyze the "reality" of the movie - just to have a good time and see some
fast driving and amazing crashes.
Serious movie-lovers will like this movie a lot. It's low on plot but high on
action and energy and lots of "eye candy" tossed in the pit scenes. Plus any
movie where you can see Gina Gershon's sexy-snarl for 2hrs is worth the price of
admission. Considering most people go to the races to see the crashes - this
movie delivers those in excess and nobody is getting hurt.

I didn't think the movie was too bad up until the last race. Then it went
down in flames. Of course, I'm more into independent films than hollywood
blockbuster. I think CART should have had more say in the filming of the
crashes, but it's a fantastic 2 hour CART advertisement.

Probably a Chuck Norris fan too.
Yep $13 million and #1 isn't too bad for an opening weekend for a Sly movie
these days.
In all fairness Driven had no real competition this weekend. But with Mummy
Returns, Swordfish, Pearl Harbor and many other good movies just around the
corner I don't think many movies will remain in the #1 slots for more than a
week (PH may be the exception to that since it will appeal to a wide target
audience of all ages)

Judge Dredd was a FUN movie just like Driven was. It certainly won't win any

Armageddon, Gone in 60 Seconds, and a hundred other movies that release every

Just because your taste is different doesn't mean it's right. Just because
you like a niche product it doesn't mean that product is necessarily better
(or worse) than what the mass market would prefer. It just means that
product is better for you.

Nothing wrong with my spelling, it's my typing that needs work. But,
there you go proving your low intellect again. What does one's

Keep telling yourself that. But, just so you peons know the facts. I
enjoy movies from most genre's so long as they are well done. Judge

Those people are not intellectuals. Two completely different things.

Why don't you consider literature and the written word an art form? It
seems to me that that would be an equally good reason to consider
someone to have low "intelectual" capacity.
Move along yourself Nos, you're no better than anyone else here. Oh, and

I wouldn't go that far to say "one of the worst". With an IMDB rating of
4.4, there are thousands of movies worse then it. It's just a mistreatment
of the comic. It also has the heresy of all heresy, as he takes off his
helmet in the movie!!!!
@$%#! Hollywood screwing comic fandom another time ;)
Let's also remember that this "crap actor" was nominated for BEST ACTOR in

That's not why I thought it was bad. It just had poor performances all
around and was very cheeesy.

Strange things happen when something has mass appeal. You told me you
think Gladiator is junk and yet it won the acedemy award for best
picture. Stallone did do a movie prior to becoming successful where he
played a credible role. It's called "The Lords of Flatbush" and he
plays the role of a teenage 50's era rocker. The role suited him.

Maybe because it was such an unusual role for him.

Judge Dredd.
Some people have seen it and like it, they also like Stallone, that does not
mean they are either less or more intellectual than you or I. They simply
have a different taste in movies.

Sure it does. You are what you eat, as they say. In with shit, out
with shit. Your choice in music, art, literature, film (amongst other
things) has a lot to do with intellect. They are the building blocks
of a mind. Not saying one should spend their life watching just
serious film, but one shouldn't spend their life filling it with
rubbish films like Judge Dredd either. A person who is inclined to
read Camus, Sarte, Hesse etc. (and not just becasue they had to at
university) would tend to have a higher intellect than one who spends
their time reading light weigth novels that serve no purpose other
than to entertain. It seems some of you have confused intellect with
intelligence. I make a couple of comments about Stallone and his
acting abilities and the next thing I know I'm being attacked for my
ideas.Remember "Lord Of the Flies"? Well, you boys should leave Piggy
alone and lose the mob mentality.

Pure poppycock. I never claimed to be a wiz but I used to be fairly widely
read, however, if I get something completely different out of a story, that
shouldn't make me wrong. This bozo...(professor) seemed to think there was
only one Possible read to the story. Obviously by my interpretation, he was
wrong...but I got the F. Goodbye Mr Satre or whatever his name

Back on the subject...if a person reads deep intellectual stuff, he may
EXERCISE his intellect more but it won't make him by definition any smarter,
wiser, or more profound. Conversely, If I like Monty Python, does that make
me intellectually weaker?

True, the Academy Awards aren't really realistic awards, but he was very
credible in the original Rocky, it was his own role suited for him. A very

LOL well the names of the movie is enough ;)
There's the African Queen, that's an easy one (have the movie at home).
There are other movies they were both together? Hmm let's check out IMDB...
<tic tic tic> Oh hmmm Road to Bali, yes I remember that movie, had no idea
she was in. Oh, uncredited she is. I don't see any other movie.

I agree with the last part, but I still think it was a damn good movie
(good as in 'entertaining'). I skipped the movie when it run here in
the cinema, I didn;t rent it on video, I just thought it would be
another boring action movie. Untill a friend of mine showed it to me
on dvd with dolby surround.. I sat on the edge of my seat for two
hours.. especially the camerawork was absolutely fantastic.

How can that be biased? I go see movies from all over the world (note that
4-5 movies in that list are not *American* movies). But since I live in
Qubec, movies from where I live are easily accessible to the viewers. Like
American movies for Americans. Like German movies in Germany. Like Italian
movies in Italy. I watched many and those two stand upon my top 10 list.
Why? Because in the society in which I live, they affected me. Like Dancer
in the Dark affected me, or CTHD. Why are you trolling?
It's "Quebecois", btw.

Dancer in the Dark is an excellent movie, directed by the great Lars von
Trier and featuing Bjrk and Catherine Deneuve. It won the Golden Palm at
Cannes last year. It's out on DVD now in the US, you should really check it
out if you like movies. It's not a mainstream movie, but it's really
amazing. And Bjrk, what can I say more! (hmmmmmm!). Wonder Boys, American
Psycho and Shadow of the Vampire are American movies released last year,
they should all be available in VHS/DVD now. Really all quality movies to
rent.

Yeah, in my list there is still 3 movies that are shown in the US presently.
It just takes more time to the American public to reach out to other movies.

Yea, and they are mostly pretentious, how artsy can we be if we try
really hard movies. You slag Gladiator, but put this stuff on a
pedestal? They use those movies for filler on TMN late at night.

Because a movie is not made in America, they are pretentious? My god, you

I was blown away by CTHD and not much else lately.
The only movie I'm looking forward to is the Christmas release of the first
