Just went from dial up to cable and love the speed. But a big problem now- the cable isp has really bad usenet service (the dial up was great for this). I don't receive many posts or replies and it's getting frustrating. The messages I do get are usually followups to an original message I never got. Complaints to the ISP aren't effective. Any advice on a good web-based or alternative source of news? Now that deja/google only have news reading without replying that's not an option. tia

of course, I realize that the post with the perfect solution probably won't make it back to me :( here's hoping for the best
It appears as if you're using @home, which based on my experience has a news service at least as good as a couple of pay services I've used--which means that it's very, very good. I don't understand why you're having problems unless there are several different varieties of @home's service. If you don't mind paying, I've had good service from www.newsguy.com. They have several different levels of service available and keep posts for ages compared to most others. I'm getting many messages on this forum and others which are followups to previous posts which I never received. Lots of "Re: blah blah blah" with original quotes taken from a post which I never got. A good example of this is the "Montoya Hype" thread, where I'm getting a lot of replies by David Fisher to posts I never got. He's answered Gregor Veble, Andre Warringa, ymenard, and Gerry Aitken - none of whose original posts I've received. Imagine my predicament- it's as though ras has become the David Fisher forum. :-) > If you don't mind paying, I've had good service from www.newsguy.com.They > have several different levels of service available and keep posts for ages > compared to most others. Thanks - I might give it a try if the price is right, but it seems ridiculous to pay for messages I should be getting anyway. @home has really been a mixed bag in my experience- sometimes great service and techs, sometimes *incredibly bad*. The problems of a large company I guess.
Have @home here in NJ and have over 200,000 NGs to use. I would check into this "will" I have never had any NG problems with @home! Many other porblems but not with NGs yet.. For example, I'm up to 5 responses in the "Montoya Hype" thread from David Fisher without a sign of the post that he's responding to. Why would it download some posts but not others? That's the question. Only a few are coming in everyday. Is it just that my local @home news-server blows? So far I've seen 2 people who seem to have no problems with it, but their results are obviously different than mine.

You might want to reset your newsgroups and make sure you aren't filtering anybody. Also, check to make sure that you're downloading all the available current messages. You might not be downloading all the headers. Jerry Morelock

Many ISP (especially ones that cover wide areas) have several mirror news server located in different places. However if the bandwidth is not sufficient they might be not completely mirrored. You may try to ask your ISP if that's the case and ask them for address of their other news servers. If ISP support won't help, ask somebody who has no problems with the same ISP what is the address/IP of the news server they use. I had similar problems a while ago and have cured it by switching to another mirror server. Good luck, Alex (alexti)

It's not just you Will. I use @Home in IL, and up until recently everything was fine. Now I too am getting about 50-60% of the posts. Agent will report "getting up to 200 message headers", and then it may only actually retrieve 140 or so. Even worse in the binary areas where if you miss 1 part your file is worthless. Thanks for the help everyone. Yep, using OE which always worked fine before. Changed the settings to the new account and all and it works... kinda (as I've described). I get a few messages but nowhere near the 2533 you've gotten in the last 5 days. I'd be hard pressed to put a number on it but surely less than a hundred or so per day in ras (and that's probably being generous). I don't have anyone killfiled (never have either) and checked it to be sure (thanks for the idea, chainbreaker!). I've got it set to download 1000 headers at once, so it's not like there's an artificially low number of post headers being downloaded. And I've tried clicking the 'download next 1000 headers' too with no luck. I'll try deleting the news server from OE and then reconfiguring it. If that doesn't work I'll just try using another news reader other than OE. Might get lucky and get around the problem. Can't think of much else to do. thanks again for the advice. this is really frustrating. if this doesnt fix it I guess I'll try out one of the pay servers.

Will.... Some questions...you can answer to yourself: What programs have I installed recently....that could be causing this problem? (Did you install the @Home software...it contains their "browser" which could have corrupted or overwritten your OE program...but is not compatible, version wise, with yours?) Did my OE news account "settings" get changed by some program I installed recently? Are you running Windows ME? OE doesn't work very well in it. Try downloading and installing the latest version of Internet Explorer, 6.0 beta. Its really not much of a beta...but adds tons of new functionality that I find works great. Included...is a new Outlook Express...Version 6.0...with lots of new stuff. At least, you'll know your OE isn't corrupted. Check with others in your @Home network area. If they are not having problems with their news downloads......or if you can get them to subscribe to RAS for you....and download a set of headers at the same time as you do it........and yours are coming up short, well, that tells you its a software problem on your end. If its a "server" problem on the @Home news server in your node, complain like hell...everyday.....or, switch to another one in the @Home network. I live in the San Francisco area....but regularly switch to the @Home news server out of Dallas......to download r.a.s. You need the "domain name" server for the alternative server...plump it into your TCP/IP as an "alternative" gateway. Its a piece of cake. (I can get email from an alternative @Home email server in the same manner.) Another thing you might try...is to uninstall Outlook Express.....(use Add/Remove Programs)....then go into "System Info".....click on the "Tools" header and choose "Update/Repair Internet Explorer".....that will reinstall a fresh OE for you. You'll have to re-setup your news and email accounts....but use the wonderful MS Wizards....let them do it! I'm out of ideas....... Tom

Because your ISP is only pulling in feeds from a few sources. I had this problem with an ISP once and that was the reason why. To get all posts showing they must use mutliple feeds. Lot's of big ISP's figure Usenet is not used by the mainstream and therefore do not allocate the resources needed to it. -- eFalcon keyboard chart in PDF format http://storm.prohosting.com/~nos146/ef4_keys.zip

Hey Will!! Listen you are paying for this service via @home so I'd call their 800# after {or even right now!} you have done what you described! You pay for it so you deserve to have it & have it all in correct working order! Remember they always "oil the squeekiest wheel first!" <g> Good Luck & @home Techs are usually always willing to please! Cheers Thom_j.
