Please tell me this GPL won't run on P4 1.7 stuff is not true

Notable threadGPL will not run on 1.7GHz Pentium 4 processors

Players were alarmed by reports that Grand Prix Legends would not run on Pentium 4 CPUs of 1.7GHz or faster. Andre Warringa relayed that Papyrus's Grant Reeve had confirmed the problem on VROC, and it appeared to be a clock-speed timing issue rather than P4-specific. Suggestions included underclocking or keeping a dedicated older GPL machine, and some floated paying Papyrus programmers for a fix, which Dave Henrie said was unrealistic for so small a community.

I can't stand the notion that GPL will not run on a system robust enough to also run N4 and WSC in full glory. I need to keep GPL on my system for a long, long time. For those wondering what I am talking about--reports are that GPL will not run on a P4 1.7 or faster CPU... Yup I heard this too from some of the Gurus in Vroc.. Seems odd but they apparently all agree it is true! Really odd..eh? Thom_j. "Marc Collins" wrote: | For those wondering what I am talking about--reports are that GPL will not | run on a P4 1.7 or faster CPU... | Marc.

If it's true then you could always slow the PC down by fiddling with the BIOS or using SoftFSB. My 1.4 GHz Athlon is fast enough - I now have all options turned on (including skid marks, which do add something to the game) and the only time the fps drop below 36 is at the start when at the back of a large grid. -- Tony Whitley GPLRank -0.16 "On some laps I'd get as many as fifteen corners really right, but Moss, he gets them all right on every lap" - Von Trips after the 1961 German Grand Prix.
Say it ain't so! I was just about to pull the trigger on ordering the mobo and cpu for my new box, a P4 1.5 Mhz. This is devastating! The whole point to a new computer was to run GPL a little faster. There must be some folks out there with a P4 at 1.4 or faster that run GPL. If you're out there, let us know. <insert sobbing grown man sound>"this can't be true." I have a 1.4 AMD and it never drops below 36 unless I'm using FSAA and really high resolution, like 1600x1200. Usually I run it in Glide with 2x FSAA at 1280x1024, all options on, full field and don't see a slowdown. > -- > Tony Whitley > GPLRank -0.16 > "On some laps I'd get as many as fifteen corners really right, but Moss,he > gets them all right on every lap" - Von Trips after the 1961 German Grand > Prix. > > > > -- ============================ elh4jj at hotmail <------------------ ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

To answer my own question, from the thread at http://www.legendscentral.com/ubb/Forum29/HTML/001544.html (link posted by Phil Lee) it seems that it is processor speed dependent...... Bad news. Ian

LOL Tony... My "piddly" Intel P3 800mhz has always kept a rock solid 36fps except for the start & it never drops below 32fps! Not even in the big starts with full' field and a lot of graphics at the start but I feel it has more to do with my GF2'GTS'Pro & 256-megs of PC133Dram combined. I want to upgrade to the 1ghz cpu but for now I must wait for a few more pennies and I will keep everything for quite some time after the upgrade... Cheers Thom_j. With Athlon 900s available boxed retail for $100 and falling, closeout V5500s available for $100 and falling, SBLive! sound cards available for $50 and falling and all of this soon to be available on the used market for fractions of THAT the solution is simple, obvious, and not terribly expensive. Almost right. It's a 1 GHz "AXIA" unlocked and running at 1.4. I definitely see 29 fps from the back of a full grid at Monaco @1600x1200 with the D3D driver on my GeForce 2 MX. I do have 3D wheels. your right, your NON3dfx card cannot run a glide coded game. Your card is made by another company other than 3dfx which is the only company to have a chipset that runs 3dfx Glide programs. (And yes I know all about the glide wrappers for nvidia.) Glide is a 3d api that was coded to run on 3dfx cards. Nvidia can run opengl and d3d but not Glide. dave henrie "Tony Whitley" <[email hidden]. c o . u k> wrote in message news:9duv3k$i12$[email hidden]...

For GPL2 I'd pay $500. For GPL I'm perfectly happy maintaining the hardware I've already got to keep it running, that ought to keep me going for another 10 years or so. When I upgrade I'm going to have to go for a new Mobo and memory anyway, along with the cpu, possibly even a new power supply and video card. I'm nearly all the way to a dedicated box at that point. It's a solution that works for me. KFG
Folks....you have got to get ONE thing through your heads. WE here in RAS are a very small-tiny-miniscule group. How many GPLers are on Vroc each night? About 100 to 200? No mass market company can cater to a couple of hundred users. IF EVERYONE here ponied up 500$ you probably couldn't even pay the building rent where the coding work would be done. Would it cover the secretaries? The accountants? The taxes? The benefits? Would it cover the $$ that Sierra and it's Parent companies would require to supervise Papyrus? Would the pitifully SMALL # of users here have enough cash to pay the Papyrus Coders to rebuild the GPL engine? Would we have enough cash to pay for beta testing? How about purchasing enough P4's just to TEST the sucker...And will we have enough to cover the losses incurred on Papyrus' next project while they put that aside to rework a game that was a HUGE FINANCIAL FLOP 3 years ago? Folks....asking Papyrus to continue development of GPL is just as silly as demanding Rendtion support on N4. Can I be any more plain? Building your own dedicated box with 1.33ghz processor and current generation vidcard makes FAR FAR more sense than expecting Sierra to release funds for further work on GPL. dave henrie "Kevin Gavitt" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:NwEM6.93408$% > For GPL2 I'd pay $500. We're completely in the dark about what kind of a task it would be to cure the 1.7 problem, but I certainly think this mad little GPL community could get together enough money to fund a few weeks of a programmer's time... and I'm sure there's enough goodwill within Papy to ease the process along. However Papyrus aren't independent, and even if they were, I'm sure they've got many better things to do with their time. Besides, I think there are relatively few people prepared to *gamble* significant amounts of money on a patch... and it certainly would be a gamble. Andrew McP

well all of this topic I have to say is very disappointing news. I had looked forward to (firstly) and (latterly) had great fun 'playing' GPL since about 1996 when it became clear it was under development. I paid 30ukp for the game and have had I would guess about 500ukp of enjoyment from it. I see no reason NOT to play it for many years to come - there is nothing comparable even remotely on the horizon. Modern F1 (and consequently sims) I feel have become far too predictable and boring - hell the tracks do not have a fraction of the challenge that the ring, Spa, or many of the other GPL ones do, not to mention the cars. I am perhaps older than the average RAS GPLer and my hard drive has been almost exclusively race-sim orientated from the days of the original Indy 500. From 1998 on I built my machines to handle papy sims at their best (Celeron Rendition then Celeron V3, now running AMD Duron o/c to 1000 MHz with Geforce 2). (Still not able to run N4 flat-out though ! ). So what is the solution for our happy band - I doubt very much if another patch for GPL would ever appear - though I refuse to believe that having done it for N4 it would be THAT major a programming job for GPL. The solution however is probably going to be building bespoke machines with a range of FSB/multiplier options so that CPU can be run under 1.4 G if need be. Just checked that my ABIT KT7A RAID can be underclocked to 500MHz. I won't upgrade motherboard for 2 years I guess, and even that future upgrade I will make sure will run sufficiently slowly to run GPL, if no alternative is found in the mean-time. Finally I hope this won't discourage all of the community producing tracks, cars and other utilities for GPL. Your efforts are so valued. Just my ha-penny worth Ian

That was the whole point. It would be flowed directly to the programmers--who have already released "unofficial" patches prepared on their own time. Marc. "Tony Whitley" <[email hidden]. c o . u k> wrote in message news:9e04t7$avv$[email hidden]...

It's a 1.2 AMD overclocked to 1.4. Yes, that's the coffee you're smelling--maybe you should open your eyes now? No, you can't use Glide. It's only for 3dfx cards. I'm surprised the MX isn't faster in GPL! I was considering getting rid of my Voodoo5, but maybe it's still got a little life left in it yet. :) -- ============================ elh4jj at hotmail <------------------ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| "Tony Whitley" <[email hidden]. c o . u k> wrote in message news:9duv3k$i12$[email hidden]... > > "Tim Elhajj" wrote... > > > > > > "Tony Whitley" <[email hidden]. c o . u k> wrote > > > > > marks, which do add something to the game) and the only time the fps > drop > > > below 36 is at the start when at the back of a large grid. > > > > Really?
