1000MHz chip and Voodoo2 with GPL ?

Adding a Voodoo2 for Glide in GPL on a 1GHz PC

Ian Greenwood, unhappy with D3D patch artefacts on his GeForce2 MX, asked about adding a Voodoo2 for Glide in GPL. Replies said a single Voodoo2 is limited to 800x600, two in SLI are needed for 1024x768, and a Voodoo3 might be better; a claim of 70fps in GPL was ridiculed since GPL caps at 36fps.

Anyone running a 1000MHz CPU and Voodoo2 with GPL ? what kind of framerates do you get ? (D3D is annoying me - thinking of buying a V2 card for Glide) Ian

get a fucking GeForce GTS2 and be done with it, the D3D Patch for GPL is great.. I get 70fps outta it! <fluffypony> Ian Greenwood wrote:

Maybe he needs glide for other games as well. So long as I fly RB2 I'll still need glide, for just one example. A V2 alongside a gforce might be a good solution for that.
If you get 70fps in GPL then your system is screwed, GPL is capped at 36 :) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> fluffypony <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > get a fucking GeForce GTS2 and be done with it, the D3D Patch for GPL is > great.. The V2 is an add on card just to support glide titles, the primary card will remain in place for all the other stuff. To answer the original question, I had a V2 in a P2 333 which would give a constant 36fps at 800 X 600 with about half detail and 19 AI, dropping to mid 20's at the start. I think the slowdown was due to the CPU more than the V2. Don't expect to be able to run the V2 at anywhere near the resolutions you can achieve with a GEForce2 and the D3D patch though, I think the max was 1024. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Tyler Eaves <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Sat, 19 May 2001 21:51:37 GMT, Ian Greenwood > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >Anyone running a 1000MHz CPU and Voodoo2 with GPL ? > > > >what kind of framerates do you get ? Isnt GPL's FPS capped at around 36-37fps?? "fluffypony" wrote: | get a fucking GeForce GTS2 and be done with it, the D3D Patch for GPL is | great.. I get 70fps outta it! | <fluffypony>

I use a have a Voodoo2 and Pentium 2 350 and I get maximum frame rates at 800x600 at all the original circuits 95% of the time. V2s too are very cheap in the Uk now. To be more precise - how scaleable is the V2 with a fast CPU such as mine ? Any chance of 36fps at 1024x768 (my monitor won't go higher)?

Actually, thinking back, I think a single Voodoo2 can only reach 800 X 600 comfortably in GPL, that may even be the maximum unless you use 2 in SLI. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Ian P <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9e6ufj$bnf$[email hidden]... > Don't expect to be able to run the V2 at anywhere near the resolutions you > can achieve with a GEForce2 and the D3D patch though, I think the max was > 1024. > > -- > Ian P > <email invalid due to spam>

If you really want 3dfx, why not get a V3 3000 or something alongside your Geforce 2MX, and use that as your primary display adapter? The 2D of the Voodoo 3 is probably better than the Geforce anyway, so you can consider the Geforce to be the add on-card, especially for games (other than GPL). I mean, you don't really want a single V2 when you have a 1Ghz CPU, it *will* be a bottleneck in GPL (although it goes a long way). Ice D

To run 1024 x 768 in Glide with the V2 you need 2 Voodoo2's in SLI mode. KO

Until recently, I used 2 V2's in SLI with a Celeron 566@850. (Have since moved up to a V5) I was able to run GPL at 1024 with the detail slider at about halfway, as I recall. (Some details were turned off, but not too many.) Before I added the 2nd V2, I believe that I was able to run GPL at 1024x768 -- but just barely. I kept it at 800x600 for the sake of maximizing the framerate. Ian P wrote:

Agree with this assessment. ....And you are right that the V2's are very inexpensive (if you can still find them), so it might be worth your while to get 2 V2's and run them in SLI mode. (Make sure that you have enough open PCI slots, first. K O Sletten wrote:

No. A single Voodoo2's maximum resolution in Glide is 800x600 no matter how fast your cpu is. It is a limitation of the Voodoo2 not the cpu speed. You cannot run 1024x768 in Glide with a single Voodoo2, it requires 2 Voodoo2 cards. > How processor dependent is the card's performance. Not very... > GPL I always thought was mainly CPU intensive. Yes it is very cpu intensive

I had thought so myself but that's not the case. I remember it well, having been corrected on this forum by a member of the GPL design team.
What about an Obsidian X24, they can be had used for a fair amount and it only uses one PCI slot, it is an SLI adapter with several 3dfx GPUs. There is a guy named Jack on misc.forsale.computers.pc-specific.cards.video that is trying to sell one for about $75 US (now you could amost get a V5 for that . . .) > Anyone running a 1000MHz CPU and Voodoo2 with GPL ? > > what kind of framerates do you get ? (D3D is annoying me - thinking > of buying a V2 card for Glide) I had a P2 350 and a V2 for a while. I enjoyed pretty high framerates at 800x600 most of the time (not at Monaco with lots of AI cars), but I wanted to be able to max out the detail, improve the resolution and use funky features like the 3D wheels. I bought a P3 600, expecting some improvement, but in fact it made virtually no difference in GPL. The more detail and stuff happening on screen, the less difference it made. In contrast, switching to D3D on a GeForce 256 DDR was like a revelation. In conclusion, I'd say it was not worth your while getting a V2 for your 1Ghz PC. You'd be better off sorting out whatever driver problems are causing the flag colour malfunctions. Everything works fine on my system, although the texture filtering doesn't look as good in D3D as in Glide IMHO. Alex. BTW - one of my friend's computers was significantly faster at running GPL with a Celeron 333 and a GeForce 2 GTS than my P3 600 (@744) and V2.
I can runGPL at 1024 using my single Voodoo 2? Admittedly the frame rates are a bit too poor. "Ian Greenwood" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > amend my previous post - with one V2 1024 is clearly asking too much. > 2 V2s i think would overheat my already crowded case !Ian, With GPL the biggest difference the CPU makes is in the framerate with a large number of cars in a race. I run a 1Ghz Athlon with a V3 3000 and get 36 fps everywhere @1024x768 with all details at max and 19 other cars - drops to 29 at the start when running at 1280x1024 with all detail on. I seem to remember with the "standard" GPL setup of a 300celeron@450 and SLI V2s getting 25 fps at the start of races and 36 elsewhere with the detail slider nearly halfway and specular lighting etc. turned off at 1024. One big advantage of Glide is the ability to have full detail in the mirrors. I tried a GF2MX with my Athlon and had to go back to "cars and track (?)" in the mirrors to get acceptable framerates. If GPL is your number one sim, then maybe you should consider dicing the MX in favour of (dare I say it?) a V5 (cheaper than a "proper" GF2 GTS and will certainly give better results in GPL and acceptable results in most other sims) Just my 2 pacific peso's worth.
