Beating Papyrus's benchmark lap times in GPL

L Wong described pushing to beat the Papyrus benchmark times at every GPL track, which underpin GPLRank. Players compared which tracks they found hardest or easiest, debated whether Rouen and Spa are enjoyable or frustrating, and recommended the LOR track guides and setups.

Hi all , I've had a -ve GPLRank for a while now thanks to a quick ring time - and yet I never really felt I was a negative GPLer because I had +ve times at other tracks. Until last night - all out push at Zandy ( manic ) , Monaco ( pot luck ) and even Silverstone ( 1 29s will have to do , thank heavens I don't need to go back there again - utterley lacking in any kind of enjoyment except t2 - GPLEA should do something with that circuit to make it "flow" like their Snett67 update did , some braking markers would be nice , anyway I digress ) My question to the fine folk of r.a.s. is this Which of the Papyrus times did the group find hardest to match ? I found the Monza time relatively easy to beat The Monaco time pretty tough Look forward to hearing your experiences 00JimWheatly -14ish i think
I found Spa, Zandy, Monaco and the Ring hard, haven't managed to beat Papy at any of these yet. Silverstone, Watkins Glen and Monza were the easier ones. I''ve not driven F1 for a month or so now - been concentrating on the Vroc F2 races. Quite looking forward to getting an F2 GPLRank and then going back to F1 to see how much difference it makes (if any) :0) JimSeamus "L Wong" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CZON6.300429$[email hidden]... > Hi all , I've had a -ve GPLRank for a while now thanks to a quick ring > time - and yet I never really felt I was a negative GPLer because I had+ve > times at other tracks. > > Until last night - all out push at Zandy ( manic ) , Monaco ( pot luck )and > even Silverstone ( 1 29s will have to do , thank heavens I don't need togo > back there again - utterley lacking in any kind of enjoyment except t2 - > GPLEA should do something with that circuit to make it "flow" like their > Snett67 update did , some braking markers would be nice , anyway Idigress )

For whatever it's worth, I'm with you. I could just lap Silverstone by myself for hours. It's almost. . . well, meditative. KFG
Being an (eternal?) newbie, there are still many tracks I haven't even logged a time on (I'll save my blushes for the below times), so here are my current, sad attempts: Papy Me Monaco 1:29.33 1:35.74 (Eagle) - It's the fear of the tunnel and trying too hard, I think Monza 1:30.20 1:29.14 (Eagle) - Still searching for that elusive 1:28 The 'Ring 8:21.93 9:50.64 (Ferrari) - My first none shift-r lap; woo hoo! Rouen 1:59.28 2:10.04 (Eagle) - *$@]#~ Nouveau Monde!! Silverstone 1:30.91 1:33.76 (Eagle) - I think I need to practice my trailbraking... Spa 3:20.34 4:45.06 (Eagle) - Er, I think I need to just practice Glen 1:06.91 1:09.90 (Ferrari) - I'll get my coat now, shall I? As you can see, I spend far too much time at Monza. A common newbie error? Me: 3 Papyrus: 8 <g> The only times I've beaten are Monza, Watkins, and Silverstone. The others? Not even CLOSE. Mexico is the only other track where I'm within a *second*. You might be better avoiding the eagle for the moment as it's a big old bird that a bit unwieldy, especially at a tight track like monaco. Stick with the ferrari. I've knocked 8secs off my rank this weekend by using the ferrari setups from these track guides http://www.gmmhost.co.uk/gmmhost/legendscentral/LOR/trackguides/gpl/index.html They're excellent and are, what I call, 'normal' setups rather than freaky rear wheel steer jobs like the world record holders tend to drive. In fact, you're also faster than me at Monaco, Monza, Silverstone and Glen. The circuit I like best is Spa (3:34 Eagle) but finding another 14 seconds there is quite out of the question, I've settled for just enjoying myself! I agree. Silverstone, particularly Abbey Curve, was where I learnt the benefits of slow in, fast out that I'd seen everyone talking about. It's also my biggest margin under the bogey time (1.6S), if I ever get Chapel really sorted that should increase. My favourite track is still Spa though. The Nurburgring has to be the most difficult, surely? Score: Me 5 (WG, Silverstone, Monza, Spa, 'Ring) Papy 5 (Monaco, Zandvoort, Mexico, Mosport; all +1. Kyalami +0.25) Even 1 (Rouen) -- Tony Whitley GPLRank -0.54 "On some laps I'd get as many as fifteen corners really right, but Moss, he gets them all right on every lap" - Von Trips after the 1961 German Grand Prix.

Spa??????? Really?? I love Spa... But Tim Wheatley is the one I must thank for learning Spa about a year & 1/2 ago.. He really made it easy for me!! I was stuck at 3:23s-24s & then he did a complete review on my replay.. Wow what a difference after his critique!! Dropped into the 3:19range is just a week. 2nd one over here. I passed the 2.00 easily (have a PB of 1:59.99 there, if I recall right :-), but still don't like the track. I tend to loose it in the fast corners - probably a setup problem, dunno. JensSchumi On Wed, 23 May 2001 14:29:56 GMT, [email hidden] (Andre Warringa) wrote:

Go for it, man!!! Also, shouldn't use the lack of detail as an excuse. I've probably been driving with just as little, if not less, detail as yourself and am now down to 1:57.89 in under a month with a wheel. You've just got to be a little more creative when choosing where/when to brake. That braking for the hairpin can be a bit dicey if you try to squeeze every last tenth out of it, but that shouldn't be necessary in order to go under 2 mins. Normally as soon as I'm about to touch the darker driving line I brake hard and change down 2 gears to 2nd. At the same time I try to make sure that I'm getting near the inside and not too wide (if you let the car run wide I find that there's a strong possibility of oversteer as I try to turn away from the outside of the bend), then I too coast a little around the corner until I've straightened out and then brake and change down to first. If you brake too early then try and estimate a little later. You aint' gonna get it right everytime and may find yourself overshooting on the odd occasion, but when trying to improve your pb it's worth making a few mistakes for the sake of a decent lap, surely. :) Now, get out there and have fun, and stopping putting Rouen down, it's a great track. ;-) PS: I bet you're careful in that first corner after the start/finish line - the 4th gear right-hander. If you're brave you should be able to brake hard as soon as you see the darker line and then turn in quite sharply towards the apex, almost as if you want to run up the curb. However, if you've carried enough speed you won't and will absolutely fly around this bend, modulating the throttle as you go, you don't want to get too carried away and find yourself drifting too wide on the exit now. It takes some nerve initially but, once you've been successful a few times you'll get more confident, I'm sure. Exactly my impressioin. On top of that the straights are sooo long that the next corner always cathes me unprepared, because I am just starting to believe that that straight goes around the world and that I am actually on the oval track:) Alex (alexti)

Geez Alex you suppose to hit those straights at about 195-199mph. Not 55mph..:-) You know you can do Spa in about 3&1/2 minutes easy not 2hrs.. :-) only j/k mind you.... Wait til the Le Mans track is released....the Mulsaane straight takes something like 1 1/2 minutes at full throttle. definately not a track for those with Attention Deficit Syndrome. dave henrie "Alex" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Since I don't always have a visible brake point, I often crash when I brake later than I *think* I am. This leads to being tentative every time through those sections, which doesn't help laptimes.

Hmm... Actually, they *are* there, even with lower graphics settings. I just never NOTICED them before.
