PIII 550 (Katmai - it won't overclock much) on P3B-F, Matrox G400, 256Meg RAM - using D3D patch I can practice GPL OK at most tracks, but soon as I add other cars on track my fps drops to about 25, bends come up too slowly, I let off the brakes, and then of course too quickly! I've tried turning down graphics options, and dropped to 640x480 but it doesn't help much. I've read posts that suggest some cpus are too fast, so what is just right? Thanks, -- Laurence Wilmer [email hidden] --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.255 / Virus Database: 128 - Release Date: 17/05/01
Hmmm, try a 3dfx card. I use a P2 400 196 mg ram and a voodoo 3 2000 pci oc'ed to 166. (you can get one for 50 bux) I run GPL in 1024 x 768 w/19 cars, and get a solid 36 fps 95% of the time. I would imagine on your system it should be a solid 36 fps ALL the time. Try turning down the detail slider a bit as it only affects the cars drawn ahead. Have you upgraded GPL to 1.2 ? close some resources also to free up your computer power.. geoff "Laurence Wilmer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:PS7O6.2370$[email hidden]...

It's probably your graphics card slowing you down. You should consider replacing it with the best 3dfx, ATi Radion or NVidia based card you justify spending the money on. I doubt you would see much improvement from upgrading your CPU. Alex.
I've driven GPL in D3D on a G400 (with Celeron 550) and it's fine - the fps only dropped below 36 (to about 25) when on the start with a full grid. That's in 1024 res with all details + effects on, 3d wheels all round and Bruce's latest version of the Lotus. Make sure you've got the GPL 1.2 patch and some reasonably recent G400 drivers. Use ctrl-alt-del to kill as many processes as you can before starting GPL (but don't kill explorer or systray, you need them!). Turn off FSAA too - it's pretty but steady fps is more important. Many thanks everyone for all that advice. It was the Ctrl-Alt-Del that did it. I didn't think I had anything eating resources but there must have been, as I tried it anyway (because it has always irritated me in the past when someone asks, you answer, and they ignore you because they 'know' thats not right!) and it worked! -- Laurence Wilmer [email hidden] "Jim L" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YDaO6.8309$[email hidden]... > > I've driven GPL in D3D on a G400 (with Celeron 550) and it's fine - the fps > only dropped below 36 (to about 25) when on the start with a full grid. > That's in 1024 res with all details + effects on, 3d wheels all round and > Bruce's latest version of the Lotus. > > Make sure you've got the GPL 1.2 patch and some reasonably recent G400 > drivers. Could be your 3D card. I had C300@450 with V3 and ran GPL in 1024 x 768 with a lot of stuff on. Now changed to Cel600@900 and can even run the 3D wheels at no fps-loss :-))) Do you use the mirror patch? Brings a lot Also decrease detail bias to about 30% (mine is uder the "s" of bias) JensSchumi On Mon, 21 May 2001 12:29:35 GMT, "Laurence Wilmer" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Now I'm at 35 fps even at race start with everything maxed at 1024 x 768. Good card, the G400! -- Laurence Wilmer [email hidden]
