I've been reading the WSC stuff, and I'm wondering how the cars compare to the cars run in the Motorola Cup races on Speedvision. Looks like many of the same stock-bodied cars are used. Are they the same? I hate to be negative, but the stands at the Motorola Cup races are a virtual ghost town. I like the racing, but I actually wonder how Motorola justifies the expense of sponsoring the events. This apparent lack of interest in the racing also makes me wonder how the market will be for WSC. Don't get me wrong, I hope it's popular. I'm not into the GPL era, so WSC is my greatest hope for a realistic road racing sim I've been playing Viper and modified versions of SCGT for way too long. =8^/ Tim
Don't forget LeMans Heat for NASCAR Heat! http://lemans.teampepsi.com I made it because I needed something to hold me over till WSC :) Thanks, Alex Tim O <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Are they the > same? Hmmm, The Motorola cup cars (which is now called Grand-Am) are low-cost racing cars fitted for racing. It's the little brother of series like the AMLS. WSC is SPORTSCARS, like the Panoz, McLarent GT F1, Mercedes SLK, etc.. There is a big difference, it's powered by manufaturers. Like every type of motorsports in the world, lower series have less people in the attendance. You can't expect Winston Cup crowds at ASA racing. Same can be said if you compare Grand-Am to the highest form of sports car racing. Oh and Imho WSC won't be an incredible seller, just enough to justify it's reason inside our simracing market. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.ymenard.com/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimato Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...
Isn't the Motorola cup even lower down the scale than Grand Am? Or did they roll it into one of the 5 GA classes? I thought Motoroll cars were almost stock. Grand Am has those but also GT2 type cars(Viper & Vette & Porche) and mostly 2nd hand Prototypes but with a few new Lola's and a revised Riley & Scott chassis or two. dave henrie "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:qMCO6.7390$[email hidden]...

Tim, I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding, but you seem to be implying that WSC is targeted at "Motorola Cup" fans? Actually, it probably is more targeted to the "Le Mans" fans, of which there are many around the world, especially in Europe (and I think the American Le Mans is popular as well, but I'm not sure?). Although Motorola Cup fans will certainly like it too :-) And, regarding the Motorola Cup, the stands may be empty, but don't forget all of the filled couches at home, since it's a great TV sport. I think the Motorola Cup is probably more popular than it seems... I know a lot of people who watch it on TV, including myself. I find it funny how American's call NASCAR "stock" car racing, when the cars are anything but (in the true sense of the word). The Motorola Cup features real "stock" cars, that is, production cars that consumers can actually buy off the lot, just as they are in the Motorola Cup (or pretty darn close, it is forbidden to make major changes to the production cars in the Motorola Cup, but they will make minor changes for racing safety, or to equalize a class). And the fact that they run on road circuits instead of ovals makes it even more pertinent to us "normal car drivers". As a "regular car" consumer, I find the Motorola Cup very appealing because of this. NASCAR, Indy and other types of oval races are great for live spectating, but road circuit and rally races are much better suited for TV. I mean, I do go to road races and rallys for the atmosphere and the sounds, but it is much more difficult to follow what's happening without a TV handy :-). When I went to a Formula 1 race, I was really happy to have a handheld TV, because without it, I would have been clueless. To be immersed in the incredible thundering roar of those cars may be worth being clueless. And, yes, I have high hopes for WSC... crossing my fingers... Your right, Motorola Cup is not Grand Am. It's pure production consumer cars and nothing but. Actually, there are Vipers, Vettes and Porshe's running in the Motorola Cup races. The cars may be more stock than the WSC cars, but it's not as lowball as Ymenard makes it sound. That was what confused me. Tim
The last I heard, WSC will have the ability to "create" new cars, shapes, et.. et.. If that's true then don't think WSC is *just* a Sim with the cars and series you mention. I'm assuming you/we can create a VW bug, Morris Mini, AH Sprite, and such and run them in our own created series. Or even recreate the GPL cars and run a GPL style series. The most fun I've had in the field of autoracing is while crewing for Hp, Fp and Gp, Sprites and Spitfires in Amateur SCCA events. The Pro events were fun, but never as fun as the amateur events. but then what do you expect from someone who enjoys GPL's F3 cars <g> Tim O wrote in message ...

You French Tart ;) "Low cost" is a relative term especially coming from someone who is allergic to work! =P Some people seem to confuse the speedvision cup with the motorola cup too. http://www.speedvisionwc.com/ http://www.motorolacup.com/index1.html http://www.grand-am.com/grandamcup/ Grand American Road Racing 1801 W. International Speedway Blvd Daytona Beach, FL 32114 (904) 947-6681 (phone) (904) 947-6695 (fax) GRAND-AMERICAN TO RUN STREET STOCK SERIES DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 26, 2001) - In a joint announcement today, David Berman, President of Berman Motorsport Group, and Roger Edmondson, President of Grand American Road Racing Association, revealed that Grand-Am will take over operation of the North American Street Stock Championship beginning immediately. The endurance road racing series has operated as the Motorola Cup Series for the past six years under the operation and direction of Berman Motorsport Group. In announcing the transfer of operations to Grand-Am, Berman noted, "Motorola has been a fantastic sponsor, allowing the series to grow far beyond the size and stature it held when they first got involved. I came to realize that the series was going to need a larger sporting organization behind it if it was going to continue its growth. With the expiration of the Motorola contract, it seemed like the perfect time for a seamless transition to Grand-Am." "Grand-Am has been sanctioning the series and taking over the operation of this program is just part of its natural evolution," Edmondson commented. " "The series has grown from a national Canadian program to a multinational series and as a sanctioning body Grand-Am is better equipped to manage that growth operationally. Being relieved of the operational aspects of the series will free David and his company to concentrate their natural strengths on the marketing side. It seems like a win / win deal for everyone. " The Motorola Cup will run its last race under that name when the season kicks off at Daytona International Speedway as part of the Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend February 1-4. The series will continue on for the remainder of the season with a new name - the Grand-Am Cup. A tentative schedule of 10 races is planned. -- Scott B. ROFL Yes.. you were right about that and thats why I posted that little snip from their website. Well considering I don't frequent that newsgroup anymore.. yes, its news to me =) He'll be back. He can't argue with people in everyday life like he does on the newsgroup.
