Are there any known compatibility issues with AMD Athlon CPU's and our
beloved racing sims?
I have been mostly an Intel guy over the years, but just upgraded someone
from a PIII 800 to a 1 GHz and there was basically a less than 5%
improvement in frame rates for GPL or N4 (GeForce 2 GTS video). This was
much less than I expected. Thinking about returning the PIII and going AMD
for this person instead. I don't think he wants to go down the P4 road just
yet.
Thanks,
Marc.

Marc,
I've been an AMD guys since the 486-100 days, all the way through the
K6, K6-2, and now I'm running a Duron 750 (overclocked from 600).
I've had NO problems with compatibility due to my AMD processors,
ever. I have experienced problems with lockups and such due to
various video cards over time (Voodoo Banshee seemed to be the worst),
but my Duron system with a GeForce256 card is ROCK-SOLID and VERY fast
in all sims I throw at it (haven't tried the full version of N4, but
the demo is fine, and GPL works great in D3D mode).
I don't dislike Intel, but I'm a tightwad, and AMD products always win
out on the price point issue for me. Now with the new Durons and
Athlons, the performance gap has been bridged, so from a performance
AND a price standpoint, I'd highly recommend a Duron or Athlon system
to ANY sim racer.

Made the switch myself already. I would say that for this particular
person, since he's upgrading from a fast PIII, go with a T-Bird and
not a Duron. The smaller L2 cache on the Duron does seem to make a
diff.
I went from a PIII 866 on an Abit BE6-II to a 1gig OC'd Duron on a
KT7A-RAID. In pure CPU performance upgrade, I was a little
disappointed, and I'm looking to upgrade to a T-bird 1.3ghz+ some time
soon (If I can convince a friend to build a new system with my Duron).
The 2 30gig ATA-100 drives in a RAID-0 striped config does kick major
ass, though :).

You've tapped out your video card.
800Mhz Athlon is about where I tapped out, too, with my original GeForce
DDR.
Got a few more fps when I upgraded to an Athlon 1.2Ghz DDR, but not much.
When I upgraded to the Hercules GTS II Pro the frame rates went through the
roof. Picked up a good 30 fps.
It's a leap-frog game :)

Gads! And it's such a nice card, still -- no compatibility problems,
great video quality, etc.
Good to know that the video card should be my next upgrade, though.
Thanks!

I use both a 1.33 and a P4-1.4 I like the P4 better just
because it runs so much cooler and now the P4-1.4 is cheaper than the AMD's.
Only extra cost is the proprietary power supply which I like for its quality
rather than "haveing" to use it. No probs what so ever w/ the P4 since I
bought it a few months ago. The AMD did give me some heat issues but after
fooling w/ some fans etc, I'm almost happy w/ the AMD. I guess I expect alot
from the 1.33 since its supposed to be "sooo much better." I really only see
maybe 5 fps difference not always in the 1.33's favor.

This person (and I too) has the GeForce2 GTS. What card did you have before
going to the 2 Pro? Is the Pro one step below the Ultra? There are so many
versions of the GeForce it is very confusing. But perhaps he needs a video
upgrade more than CPU??

If you/he already have a Geforce2 then you won't see a speed increase
going to the Pro version unless you run at really high resolutions.
Even a Geforce3 won't show a speed increase. Upgrade the cpu.
I have an AMD 1.33ghz cpu and there are no compatibility issues.

Since the 800 to 1000 only gave a 5% performance increase (when I expected
20%), I guess going from an 800 to 1.33 would be better. I would hope for a
50% increase (800 + 50% = 1200), but if it works on the same scale, it would
only yield a 10% or 12% increase...not worth the bother and expense I would
say.
What did you have before the 1.33 and did you do any testing to compare?

unlocked 1.33c you can usually overclock them to 1.46ghz so long as
you have a good heatsink/fan.

You don't. Any AMD chip can be unlocked by connecting the L1
bridges on top of the CPU with a conducting pen. Takes a few
minutes max and then you can change the multiplier all you
want. I don't know if anyone has tried that with the new
Atlon4 CPU's, but works with tbirds and durons.
Check out any PC hardware review site for detailed info and
information (www.anandtech.com, www.tomshardware.com, etc)

I had a GeForce DDR.
The Pro is between the GTS II and the Ultra, and is much closer to the Ultra
in performance.
