Super 1 Karting -- GPL with little wheels?

Super 1 Karting praised as 'GPL with little wheels'

John Bodin recommended Super 1 Karting, saying the full version with steering aids off and recommended steering settings is a realistic karting sim. Several owners agreed and shared settings, where to buy it and an offline league idea, while Thom j. and JasonF found it cartoonish or limited by single-speed karts and few setup options. The thread drifted into banjo and music talk.

With all the mods I've been working on, plus a new daughter to keep up with, I've kind of drifted away from mainstream activities like the F1CS2K Rank and the Offline Competition. Mod development and testing leads to a bit of "burn-out" on certain sims for me, as you must test, tweak, test, tweak, and then test some more, and that often takes the "fun" out of whatever title I'm working on or testing. This is why I often find myself playing around with oddball things to serve as an enjoyable diversion. The latest oddball diversion I've found is Super 1 Karting -- have any of you guys tried this? I had the demo for quite a while, but it didn't run on my old video card without crashing, so I forgot about it. After doing a review of a new karting center here in Indy, I found myself bit by the karting bug, so I fired up the Super 1 Karting demo -- it ran well on my new GeForce card, and I was immediately addicted. I'd have to say that this game is the GPL of karting, and I'm definitely hooked. So why hasn't this game made more of a splash here on r.a.s.? I know it lacks multiplayer support, but the AI can be pretty tough, it seems, and the game REALLY seems to have captured the essence of go-kart physics in much the same way that GPL captured the overall physics of a 1967-era Grand Prix car. Are there any dedicated sites for S1K, or any offline leagues on the Web, perhaps? Or are there glaring errors that I haven't noticed yet that have kept the rest of the GPL faithful at bay? Perhaps go-karts are too tame for the GPL faithful? Or are there are a LOT of admirers of S1K just like me, but I'm just the first one to come out of the closet? <G> Great game, and lots of fun. If you haven't tried it, I'd highly recommend checking out the demo. -- JB
At Last!! I have the full game, and I thought I was the only one in the world with this! Good game, especially in full season mode. -- -- Mvh Sven
John, I too have the full game. It is a lot of fun. I haven't played with it much but intend to again soon. Wayne Hutchison "John Bodin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Sorry John I respect many of your posts, comments, ideas etc but with this "Super 1 Karting"..? Well I dnloaded the demo but it was too cartoonie for me & I didn't see anything special about it at all!! Did I miss something? Thom_j. Thom, Did you try the cockpit view? Also, did you make sure that the "Help" aids were disabled (steering help is NO help at all -- it just slows you down and almost makes the game unplayable)? I think if you've spent any time in go-karts, you might like S1K, but if you haven't, it might not "feel" right since karts don't feel like any other type of vehicle. The "cartoonie" feeling comes from being so close to the ground and wide-open to the world, I think -- the view from a kart does look a lot like a "bumper-cam" view in an arcade racer, for example, and I think this may add to the "cartoonie" feel you experienced, perhaps. Anyway, this may be a love it or hate it kind of thing -- if you have ever gotten behind the wheel of a kart in the past, try to draw on that to give the game a bit of perspective and see what you think. IMO, S1K is about as close to racing in a real kart as you can get at this point (not like S1K has a lot of competition in the sim market, of course, but I do think it's pretty darn good). I second what Max says about the steering mods -- these are the values I'm using, and they work GREAT! Be advised, though, that if you have "steering help" enabled, it's absolutely NO help at all -- it is actually a hindrance, in fact. I think the game enables various helps (braking, steering, etc.) if you run on anything less than "Ace" difficulty mode, so make sure you check to see if the helps are toggled off. -- JB On Sat, 26 May 2001 08:36:58 GMT, Maxx <[email hidden]> wrote:

The developer is a company called Interatctive-Entertainment, I believe, and I can't find any Web site for them. The publisher was Microids, and this is their site: http://www.microids.com/ S1K is also distributed by Distributed by RealNetworks, Inc, at: http://www.Real.com You can buy the full version of S1K via direct download (27 MB) from Real.com for $14.99, I believe. -- JB On Sat, 26 May 2001 09:56:36 +0200, "Thomas Gatschnegg" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Oops! Scratch that -- the publisher for S1K was Midas Interactive: http://www.midasinteractive.com/ Microids has a new karting sim coming out called "Open Kart." It was supposed to be released May 15, I think, but other than a few advanced looks, I haven't heard a thing about this -- no reviews, no comments about availability, no reports that it's showing up in stores . . . nothing. Which doesn't bode well for the final product, I fear. -- JB On Sat, 26 May 2001 16:33:26 GMT, [email hidden] (John Bodin) wrote:

This sim rocks. It gets little credit for two reasons: 1) Its a karting sim 2) Like so many others, it not GPL :-) It's not perfect but is really really fun. The full game has all real life Super 1 circuits brilliantly detailed yet doesn't require a super machine to run well. FF. is great but very strong unless set up correctly. Brilliant, engine and tyre wear effects, nice rain effects. Driver animation rocks too, no other sim has this so detailed. It's a budget release now so i say go for it as it's cheap and really fun. You can jump in right away and race or you can really shave time off with a realistic kart set-up. A very well modelled set-up as results are really noticeable. Yip, tr cockpit view, choking the engine accurately, really learning to drive the karts properly and use the set-up options.... you'll be pleasantly surprised. Cool! That begs the question, though -- how are you with rakes, shovels, and implements of destruction? And whatever happened to the 27 8x10 color glossy photos with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used against us in a court of law? FWIW, my wife is a banjo player and also an Arlo Guthrie fan. I was reading this thread to her and she asked the following question: "Hmmm . . . I wonder if this is how Arlo Guthrie was able to get involved in the peace movement? Because he had a fretless banjo, he no longer had to worry . . ." Well after seeing some Swiss-Hutler<sp> shifter 125 and 250cc 2 stroke karts at Mid Ohio supporting the TransAm series, this sounded great. To cut this short I'm glad I ferreted out a warez copy first cause its not that good IMHO. Bad sound, all single speed karts (bleh) so no shifting, minimal setup options, no smoke effects. I set the userdata joystick sens upgrade, sim mode, no helpers nearly all full graphics and ran a few race weekends, somewhat fun but not long term, I can't believe anyone could say this is the GPL of karting. I've an entire 8 lap standing start race video from an onboard cam from a French indoor shifter kart race that gives me goose bumps every time I watch it from the sheer sense of speed and driver ferocity tempered with extremely clean minimal contact passing. This game is not that. Thom put it as a question, not a statement, all credit to the developers though, they have tried to make it realistic as well as fun, it's just a shame the market is so small for this type of product, a better demo and online play may have helped. If you are looking for a pretty realistic simulation with even smaller wheels, try Revolt (sim of radio-controlled cars). Demo is very good and full game is pretty addictive. Where else can you get a feel for what it's like to be 5 inches tall driving an RC car (yes, theres a cockpit view - well bumper really). Get it at places like www.avault.com Maxx

Have you ever DRIVEN a non-shifter 2-stroke racing kart??? Super 1 Karting does a GREAT job of simulating that experience. Yeah, it doesn't model shifter karts, but GPL doesn't model Can-Am cars -- in both cases, I have to say, "So what?" That's not what it's all about. Non-shifter karts have minimal setup options; karting is minimalistic racing, so what do want -- something less than realistic??? When it comes to non-shifter karts, Super 1 Karting pretty much IS "GPL with little wheels" at this point -- and it's going to be tough for someone to come up with a kart sim that models the genre better than S1K. If you don't like it, that's fine, but make sure you're judging it for what it is, not for what it's not. -- JB On 27 May 2001 04:23:01 -0500, [email hidden] (JasonF) wrote:

For the first couple of hours you'll feel a bit lost, but after that you'll wonder what all the trouble was. The first time I heard a fretless bass was on a Michael Hedges album. Oh yeah. I learned to play the guitar by a friend back in 89-90, and in 91 i bought my first bass-guitar, since we planned on starting a band together and a bass player was needed :) It was a really cheap korean thing $270 at the time, but it was fun. My mother dropped her jaw to the floor when I asked her to drive me to the music shop to buy a instrument (i was 16 then). The band we finally managed to put together was real crap, and we basically played a lot of Metallica songs. It was a nice time indeed. Then I moved to begin at the University and i got in tough with a band where we explored the more extreme directions of music, so I had to buy a 5 string since the old 4 string couldn't handle a fat B-string instead of the E :) A very nice Ibanez, which i still use today. Around 96 i left the band and my band aspirations are over. I have a mp3 of one of our "hit's" from that period i can mail if you are interested. It's one of our first songs we wrote, so it pretty basic, but still so experimental that it lifted some eyebrows. Two years ago a friend of mine bought a drum-kit, and i started to explore that one. So now i'm playing the drums more than i play the bass. I came to the conclusion that i'm not good at picking the tones and keys, so i'm a lot more comfortable with doing only rhythms. Two friends of mine and myself have a band where we only play well-known songs at our own parties. It's mighty fun because we only do it for fun and there is no aspirations and pressure :) Opps, a little bit too long answer here :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying

Also a lot of Metallica's songs as well as other heavy staff as well as making attempts to write our own music (without much success). Though I didn't play for 7-8 years. Shall we suggest a "Musician Cup" at GPLRank? :> Alex (alexti)
