What order did you learn GPL's default tracks?

In what order did you learn GPL's tracks?

Craig Jones asked in what order players learned the eleven original GPL tracks. Most started with Watkins Glen and Monza from the demos, then Silverstone and Spa, leaving Mosport, Monaco, Mexico and the Nurburgring until later, though a few began with the Ring. Players also debated which tracks are enjoyable and arranged online full-length races.

Carrying on from Lucy Wong's post about the Papy Benchmark laptimes, I've finally recorded a time for all tracks and posted my first attempt for GPLRank. Given my abysmal current rank (259.740), it's obviously time I learned all tracks instead of habitually selecting Monza when I'm feeling racey (oo-er!). So, out of interest, in what order did my fellow r.a.s.ers learn the tracks? It's probably fair to assume that most of us already 'knew' the 'Glen, although personally I had little patience when I got the demo (was regularly GP2ing at the time) and therefore still need to practice my braking points. I'd be interested to know who left the 'Ring 'til last (most of us?!). My learning curve has basically gone: Watkins Glen Monza (for a bit) the 'Ring (for a bit, then bottled it) Silverstone (being a Brit, I guess) Monaco (soon realising I've always been crap at Monaco, form F1GP onwards, even though I love the place and even dragged my wife there on our honeymoon ;-)) back to Monza (where I've been too long) Now trying Rouen (and yes, I AM currently scared of T1 and Nouveau Monde) I had to post times at Kyalami, Mexico, Mosport and Zandvoort to record a GPLRank, hence them being dreadful. Wonder why I've left these tracks 'til last? Please note by 'learn' I don't mean 'conquer', as all my times other than Monza will testify! On a completely different note: I just wanted to say that it's a beautiful day, it's was my birthday yesterday (s***t! 32!!), and I've finally got 'round to downloading Papy's D3D patch; it's amazing what it's done for my Celeron 433, Voodoo 3 2000 setup. I'm <sniff> SO happy!! Jonesy Remove "ANTISPAM" when replying. GPLRank-(cough) 259.740
I took a lap around all the tracks (well as far as I could get in the ring) before i tried learning one. I drove Rouen and I was just like, "Wow, they raced cars here!?!?" and I drove just that track for like 2-3 weeks and got down to about a 2:08 :), lol. Now im down to a 1:56... Craig, you left out my personal favorite, Spa.....Loove spa......fast and open, mixed with twisty and dangerous, gotta love it. But I ran Spa only after Monza, of course, and the Glen, and then Kyalami, Zandy, Rouen...really like rouen, but I'm not sub 2:00 yet.....Monaco, Mexico, Mosport, and a little 'ring. I'd give up all the other tracks, long as I can find a good Spa race. -- Ed White [email hidden] "Sideways, Slideways, and Every Other Ways" "Craig Jones" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:pkwP6.8786$[email hidden]... > Carrying on from Lucy Wong's post about the Papy Benchmark laptimes, I've > finally recorded a time for all tracks and posted my first attempt for > GPLRank. > > Given my abysmal current rank (259.740), it's obviously time I learned all > tracks instead of habitually selecting Monza when I'm feeling racey > (oo-er!). > > So, out of interest, in what order did my fellow r.a.s.ers learn the tracks? > It's probably fair to assume that most of us already 'knew' the 'Glen, > although personally I had little patience when I got the demo (was regularly > GP2ing at the time) and therefore still need to practice my braking points. > > I'd be interested to know who left the 'Ring 'til last (most of us?!). I'll second that post... it has everything you'll hate and like, camber, hairpin, tight turns, sweepinmg turns, gradient... a superbnb track to ge to grips with, Jesse Black wrote:

Hey another person in the 200's ;)! Actually, I have to check and repost my times, I may have times to break 200 now. Impressive, eh ;)? I took the following route to the tracks: Monza - til I got comfortable with sliding the car about, recovering from getting the car *way* wrong, etc. Watkins Glen The Ring! - Not even close to knowing this track, but I couldn't resist giving it some time. Rouen - Lots of off-line racing here, I really like this track - T1 I just lift right before turn in - it's a blast! Spa - My favorite from way back in GP1-2 days (albeit in dif config) Ran through all the other tracks to get GPLRank times, and discovered: Kyalami - hated this track at first - it felt too slippery, but I really enjoy the rythm I get into when I'm "on" at this track. Right now I'm readjusting to GPL with the GPLShift patch and my ActLabs. It disables the "auto-blip" of the throttle on downshifts, and unless you get the revs matched (or mash the clutch (button) in panic) the back end of the car can get *very* squirrelly. Right now I drive the Ferrari (love the sound!) with Allison Hine's setups. Started in the Cooper though. 1 month until ISDN :)!!!! I've got a machine all ready for a race server. Anyone interested in an "Also Rans" league? Kendt
I've been driving in GPL for about 2 months. My hc is down to 96.61, from 336. I drove the tracks in roughly the following order: Glen, still my favorite track. Spa, great, but starting to get slightly boring. Mosport and Kyalami nearly made me cry they were so frustrating. Kyalami's like an ice skating rink. Mosport's turns are just plain ridiculous. Love them both now. Monza has never done much for me. The Ring. On and off. Almost below 9:00 now. Only drive it on the weekends, when I have plenty of time. Zandvoort. Rouen and Silverstone. Mexico gets a bad rap. But I confess I'm starting to love it. I raced 19 AI cars in the Eagle last night and had a blast. Still can't drive Monaco. --Jeff "Craig Jones" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:pkwP6.8786$[email hidden]...

Craig Jones <[email hidden]> wrote on 25 May 2001: <snip> >So, out of interest, in what order did my fellow r.a.s.ers learn the >tracks?<snip> 1) Monza - but I'm becalmed in the mid-28s now, and can't see a way of really improving without radically altering my driving style. And, let's face it, Monza is only there as a slipstreamer blast... 2) Spa - was my favourite track from the start, and still is. You never, ever get tired of it, and it's one of the few tracks that is fun to hotlap *and* gives good racing. 3) Silverstone - for a while I was really quite good at this (if you call mid-to-high-1:28s good), but I've neglected it a bit recently in favour of Rouen. 4) The Glen - probably has less of an emotional hold over me than it does the Americans here, but it's still fun, and all the more so since I changed from Lotus to Ferrari here. 5) The Ring - "learnt" may be the wrong word, but this is about where I first got round in one piece. Had to do almost two laps, too - no Ringtrainer in those days! I'm now *fairly* confident of getting round in under 9 mins in any car, though with the BRM it's pushing it. 6) Kyalami - I tend to improve in fits and starts here - plucking up the courage to go just that little bit faster at one corner, getting round OK, trying it again, crashing... 7) Mexico - I can't do it fast to save my life (my PB is still in the 1:51s), but at least I can do it without barrel-rolling now. 8) Mosport - It's fun, but bloody hard to get right. I end up on the grass here more than anywhere else. 9) Rouen - yes, this late. I hated the hairpin so much I hardly drove it at all for ages. What a mistake! I've gone back to it now, and I *love* it - I'm still not very fast (1:59), but sliding the Ferrari around is huge-grin time! 10) Zandvoort - yuk. One tiny mistake and you're on top of a sand dune. And it's too narrow to overtake safely. I can't see why people rave about it - to me it's like Monaco without the walls. 11) Monaco. Still can't do it in under 1:30. 'Nuff said? -- David. Then I discovered Shubi's GPL Hotlap site.. What?? 1:03 on WG and low 1:27's on Monza?? Well after a year or so I did my first 1:27 on Monza but then the aliens were allready driving mid '26 laps.. and I'm still not in the 04's at WG, did a 1:05.00 lap 2 weeks ago though, so I hope to get my first 4 there soon. Anyway, after WG and Monza I did some of the more challenging tracks.. Spa, Rouen, Kyalami, Monaco.. Some tracks I absolutely avoided since I found them too frustrating.. The Ring, Mosport and Silverstone. But when GPLRank appeared it forced me to learn these tracks too.. and now that I 'mastered' these tracks they have become my favorite tracks. Especially the Ring ofcourse.. allthough still frustrating, it's just the track of all tracks.. Yesterday I did an online race at the new track Halle. Hard to learn, but it's a masterpiece, going to focus on that one now since Wilke was about 15 seconds faster than me last night.. :) Andre

I got the very first GPL demo the first day it appeared on the net. I think the first demo had Watkins Glen only, then the second demo had Monza (is that right?) But once I got the full game I learnt the tracks in this order: Monza Watkins Glen Silverstone Rouen Spa Zandvoort Kyalami Mosport Monaco The Ring Mexico (NB: I still *have't* learnt the Ring or Mexico!!!) The only add on track I have spent any real time on is Brands Hatch. 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html

Oh, how sad - my heart bleeds for you... <g> I do see your point - the trouble is that I think I would need (as I said) to change my style a lot, and frankly I just don't have the mindset for a place like Monza unless there are other cars to hit - ahem - have slipstreaming battles with.

Interesting - I don't actually find Eau Rouge *that* exciting anymore. I can think of several corners offhand that are more satisfying to get right - Malmedy especially, but also Stavelot and La Carriere. Mind you, this is one of only two tracks I have a better PB than you at (Silverstone's the other), so maybe I'm just clutching at straws...

No, it is *not* bloody fantastic to race on. I'm all for interesting layouts, but this is ridiculous. As for the "one continuing slide" bit - there's nowhere better than Rouen in a Ferrari for that - woo-hoo! >>11) Monaco. Still can't do it in under 1:30. It keeps me facinated how some people can do 26's so easily.. I practice quite often at Monza and compare my laps with GPLRA and GPLDump. Sometimes I take a corner just as fast as the 26 people, I just can't seem to get each turn perfect in 1 lap.. let alone doing this lap after lap. I raced against Javier something though a while ago, and noticed he did a couple of '26 laps in a row, the guy was unbeatable. I watched the replay and noticed he was braking unbelievable late at the Para, I never thought it was possible braking SO late yet keeping the car on the road. After some practice I now can also brake so late, but I have to focus so much on keeping the car on the road, I loose too much speed mid-turn at the para. Nope, Monza is NOT boring for me :) >Interesting - I don't actually find Eau Rouge *that* exciting anymore. >I can think of several corners offhand that are more satisfying to get >right - Malmedy especially, but also Stavelot and La Carriere. Mind >you, this is one of only two tracks I have a better PB than you at >(Silverstone's the other), so maybe I'm just clutching at straws... Eau Rouge is not as exciting in the same way Masta or Flugplatz is (it's quite easy keeping the car on the track at Eau) but it's technically such a difficult corner - the weight of the car is going all directions while taking Eau.. never could take that one right, half a second slower there than Mr. Huttu :( And I loose a lot of speed in the long fullspeed right hander. And at Masta. And at Stavelot. And.. ok, I suck at Spa. And I -hate- Silverstone. The lefthanders are killing me. I even had a hard time breaking the 1:30 there, took me a lot of practice to get into the 28's. But I simply don't enjoy Silver, too flat. Give me rollercoaster tracks like Zandy :)

Ok.. we simply disagree then :) Well, I do love Mexico too, seems I do have a weird choice of preferred tracks..

Want to hear something scary? Huttu is doing 1:23.38 there.. yikes! Andre >David. (GPLRank handicap -5.92; Monsters of GPLRank h/cap +272.44) >The GPL Scrapyard: http://scrapyard.9ug.com >"After all, a mere thousand yards - such a harmless little knoll, >really" - Raymond Mays on Shelsley Walsh.

Believe it or not, I started with the ring. This track was (is) so fascinating to me that I neglect the others. Then came: Monza WatGlen Spa Silverstone Kyalami Zandy Monaco <--- I'm just starting to enjoy this one Mexico <---- next project Rouen Mosport JensSchumi -- LWFF Ball Bearing conversion at: http://members.nbci.com/JensSchu/ GPLRank: -10.1 Monsters of GPL: sub 200
