There is a warning at the download location that you needed 1.2 prior to install that patch! You should do the following: 1. install gpl to a different folder 2. patch to the desired level (1.2 i would suggest) 3. copy your player folder to the new installation 4. apply the 3rd party patches using a tool like compfold, comparing you old gpl folder with the new one. 5. delete the old gpl folder Joachim

The patch was for 1.2 only, and it clearly said so on the Papy download page. I had the foresight to backup my entire GPL folder before trying the patch on my P3-650, although in the end it hasn't caused me any problems. Anyway, as for getting things back to how they were, I'd try backing up your core.ini and player.ini and un-installing and reinstalling GPL. Or you could try getting the papycpu.sys off someone without the patch, dunno if that'd help though. "fletch" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

And today's lesson is the every popular. . . "Don't fix it if it ain't broke." Some patches are intended to fix specific hardware problems and are at best usless, and at worst destructive, if you do not have the specific hardware the patch was intended for. Patches for apps are almost always version specific. If you are not running the version specified by the patch you can virtually expect serious problems. You applied a hardware patch for hardware you didn't have, and for a version you wern't running. You're actually fairly lucky you have a recoverable situation including all of your personal data. In other situations you might have ended up with a computer that wouldn't even boot. Back up all of your personal data in GPL. Obviously the players and replay folders, and if you've applied any modifications the cars, tracks, seasons, sound folders. Any files in the GPL folder that have been modified such as core.ini. Uninstall GPL. Reinstall GPL. Apply patches. Copy your backups over the new install. While you are doing all of this you will be thinking: " Next time I will only install patches to fix problems I already have, I will not install hardware patches for hardware I don't have, I will not install a version patch for a version I don't have, I WILL backup BEFORE I install any patch because these computer thingys are ornery buggers and who knows WHAT the bloody things will decide to do." I don't suppose you have a CD-R? Once every month or so, or more often if I've been making a lot of changes, I'll burn the whole GPL folder to CD. Then if the worst happens all I have to do is reinstall GPL, apply the patches, and then copy over the folder from the CD. 15 minutes tops, most of it spent drinking coffee, and I'm back in business. Ah, I see. Your post was a little unclear, I was under the impression you had cpu-patched 1.1. Any luck re-installing? The patch should have no ill effects on slower systems, and in my testing on a number of different systems that is indeed the case. What OS are you using? Win95 will use the patch's VCPU2.VXD to determine the machine's CPU speed while Win98, WinME, Win2000, WinXP will all use PAPYCPU2.SYS (both methods now use the same code as NASCAR4). Do you have NASCAR4, and if so, does it show the same behavior? You should be able to simply reinstall the GPL 1.2 patch and be done with it. The 2 files added by the cpufix (only one of which was even used with the cpufix patch installed as noted above) should no longer be used. However if you really want to completely remove any and all traces of the cpufix patch you should delete the leftover VCPU2.VXD from your GPL directory. Then if don't have NASCAR4 installed, you can also delete PAPYCPU2.SYS from c:\windows\system32\drivers and remove its registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\papycpu2. Note that if you have NASCAR4 installed you MUST keep these. -- Eric "fletch" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Don't know if you've seen my 2nd post yet. well I don't know anything about programming and what loads certain functions place on a cpu. But the patch changed a 32bit register to a 64bit register...or something to that effect...Since the new timing code uses a larger set of numbers...one would think it would also require a-bit more cpu oomph than the old unpatched version. btw...no matter what folks said about the 1.1 patch being faster, it also had a very problematic bug that caused the quick release of v1.2. Do yourself a favor and upgrade. dave henrie "fletch" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

hahaha my thoughts exactly. Dude is running a P2300 and installs a patch designed for a P4 1.7Ghz,, why, why, why ??????????? oh well, guess some things can't be explained On Sat, 26 May 2001 13:52:23 -0700, "RegularRacer" <[email hidden]> wrote:

fletch wrote: > > Don't know if you've seen my 2nd post yet. I was getting about 20 fps > in F10 mode with a clear track. Never any warping or hiccups. Ok, putting aside the patch problem for the moment, I think if you want to get 36fps on your system then your ATI Rage Pro 8M has to go, or at least be helped by adding a Voodoo2 card. You MIGHT want to think about getting a Voodoo3, maybe a 2000pci or a 3000agp, that will really improve the experience of gpl for you. I know the manufacturers have done tits up, but I saw some cheap v3's at PC World yesterday. Really and truly 20fsp in F10 on a clear track shows to me how incompatible your set-up is with gpl atm. Also, as mentioned by others, you really don't want to be using the v1.1. It has a timing bug in it which v1.2 fixed. I know this isn't the advice you were asking for and you prolly don't want to hear it, but if you like gpl now you'll love it to death in cockpit view with 36fps. Also IMO the physics never feels right at anything below 36fps either so... Hope that gives you food for thought. Gerry PS: BTW, are you aware that 36fps is the maximum frame rate?

I wouldn't know a Dell I8k if it jumped up and bit me. Mind you, I wouldn't let a Dell of any kind in the house, all the people I know who've had one have been very disappointed with their performance in gaming. Congrats on getting GPL to run on one. Cheers Gerry
Someone posted a while back on Dell Talk the part numbers needed to upgrade the I8k from and ATI to the GeForce2Go, but the moderators at Dell Talk removed the post! I am sure someone there has the part numbers. Worth a look-see! SLG fletch <[email hidden]> wrote:

My PC is a Dell Dimension XPS-D333 and I've been very happy with its performance for gaming for 3 years (with a few vid and sound card upgrades in there). I'm replacing it with a custom built box because it's getting old, not because of any problem with it. I'd recommend a Dell to anybody.
