Just a dreamy thought... I`ve always thought it a shame that Virtual Reality never really took off. Can you imagine games with todays 3D graphics quality? (stuff those 320x200 blocky polygon images from years ago) More to the point, a DRIVING game with a 3d headset on must surely be fantastic on the senses. Imagine GPL with full 360 degree head movement and all in true 3d... Do you think headsets will ever take off? i think it will be a real shame if noone bothers, especially for the likes of `simmers` Cheers, Richard
Yeah, I'd thought it would have taken off by now. I thought that perhaps you could have the input (tilting of your head) as simply an input into your mouse port, and have the sim use "mouselook" to look around the cockpit. Not sure if there would be a way of turning it off and allowing the mouse to opperate as normal. The output would be similar to the current glasses systems, surely its possible and fairly "easy" Ash "Richard Langfield" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9evtob$6si$[email hidden]... | Just a dreamy thought... | | I`ve always thought it a shame that Virtual Reality never really took off. | Can you imagine games with todays 3D graphics quality? The technology has been around for a while. It is quite easy to implement ... there are new headsets coming out shortly that should be a blast ... oh yeah and WSC will more than likely support it :) sounds good to me I remember flying ef2000 with a vr headset ... very cool ... in fact i stillhave the headset downstairs ... pity it doesnt support 3d acceleration .. The US military did a big study some years ago and abandoned much of their research. It is to do with depth of field and convergence of your eyes between close and far-away objects. When you're looking in VR goggles, you're not using convergence of your eyes to judge distance. Big problems... Jonathan

I have now even more doubts of that. VR goggles are still not enough mainstream to implement them correctly in racing sims. But going back to another similar point, I would really admire the first sim that gives us a mouselook system. That would be fairly easy to implement. The mouse gives us free head movement inside the cockpit, but whenever you press a mouse button it would put you back perfectly in the normal view ahead. It would be a little disorienting, but if you implement a correct mouselook that wouldn't use the vertical-axis (we don't need it for view), it would work very well I say. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.ymenard.com/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimato Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

Convergence of the eyes is only an issue up to distances of 30 feet. Beyond that binocular vision has nothing to do with depth perception. Our eyes are too close together for that. You might also try this test. Close one eye. Attempt to touch a particular spot with one finger. You'll find it's rather easy. KFG

It's to do with our eyes focussing too (I forgot to write that). In the real world our eyes focus automatically between near and far - in VR goggles they don't have to. It causes similar problems to the magic eye (stereogram) pictures - although it's different from person to person, the process of "seeing" the picture and "letting go" can take a while if you look for too long. I remember playing some stupid 3D shoot-em-up game in an arcade. It was sort of like Doom in VR. The graphics sucked(washed out/no detail), the movement wasn't fluid, the movements didn't match the screen - it was a waste of a buck. After playing for about 5 minutes(or whatever) I had a headache. I have no interest in trying it again... What I would enjoy is the first Sim that allowed you to use Multimonitor support. I would love to have 3 monitors on my system.. put 2 on either side of you (would work good on my L shaped desk) and those 2 monitors can be your side view. Check simracingmag.com - looks like it *will*! And now they're adding scent tech support?! Anyone get the feeling they should just finish the damn thing and add gadget support later ;)? Kendt Or maybe Chris and Tony are just collecting stuff for a personal ultimate gaming rig ;)... Wonder what an alien in HalfLife smells like...

It looked great, and would probably work with any game that offers real time "spectator" cameras that can be positioned virtually. Someone here might have a link to the forum- it might have been the GPLEA forum, but I really don't remember. cheers John
Right now there is a new technology being developed in this area that rather than bouncing the image off an object in front of your eye, it just beams it straight into your eye. Sounds freaky doesnt it? Right now the glasses are worth around $500,000, and are supposed to create a 60" image in front of you and im sure they'll figure out how to wrap it around your field of view :) I'll try to dig up the link to the company developing it, I'll post it here.
