Wheel clamps

Finding a wheel that clamps to a shallow desk edge

A user whose desk had a lap drawer asked for a wheel that could clamp onto only a 3/4-inch overhang. Suggestions included the Logitech Wingman Formula Force's small clamp, a board clamped to the desk with C-clamps, heavy wheels like the ECCI that need no clamps, and dedicated cockpits. The thread drifted into banter about league races.

I am looking for a good wheel setup, but I have a unique requirement. The desk I use has a lap drawer that is 5 inches deep. The drawer itself is not sturdy enough to clamp to, and I don't want to have to remove it every time I want to use my wheel. The top of the desk has an overhang that is about 3/4 inches wide. In other words, if I could find a wheel that only needs to clamp to the outer 3/4 inches of the desk, and doesn't extend any deeper, it would work. Does anyone know of such a wheel? Thanks, Hal

I really doubt you'll find a secure wheel that has less clamp area than the LWFF (which, IMO, isn't that secure). Dale.
Hmm. Not real impressed with the button layout on the LWFF. Another possibility is that if the clamps are less than 4.5" in height, I might be able to fit the wheel on with the drawer just pulled out a few inches, so that the clamps fit inside the drawer. Any wheel with clamps that are less than 4.5" high prior to tightening and less than 23" apart would probably fit inside the drawer. I already know that the Sidewinder and the Thrustmaster Ferrari won't fit in those dimensions (it was REAL difficult returning that Ferrari wheel btw, what a jewel!), but perhaps there are others. Any more suggestions? I feel your pain. The only solution I've found for the moment is to keep my lap drawer on top of my dresser. : ) That is, until I finish building my dedicated sim station. KFG
Why don't you just open your drawer enough to get claps under the desk and then close the drawer as far as you can? That's a good suggestion, but as I mentioned above in another reply, the drawer is only about 4.5" deep, which still prevents some clamp systems from working. So if I can find a wheel that has clamps that require less than 4.5" height to install and close that would probably work also. Unfortunately the MS Sidewinder and the Thrustmaster Ferrari already flunked that test also. Right now I'm thinking that the TM Nascar Pro Digital 2 might work, but I need to find one on display in a store so I can measure it. I got an idea! Take a piece of 3/4" plywood and set it under your monitor and protruding from the desk and clap it to that. Many people find the ECCI heavy enough that they find they don't need clamps. Or at least it sounds like a good excuse for trying to aquire one. KFG
That's a good idea too, but I also use this desk and computer for other things besides gaming. If I have to go to that length, it would probably be easier to just pull the drawer out. Thanks for the ideas, though. Hal "Sean Higgins" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I got an idea! No need to mail a picture. I think you are right, it probably will work. Not sure yet whether I want force feedback though. I tried a TM Ferrari force feedback wheel with N4, and I couldn't even get around the track. I suppose it's just a matter of getting used to it, but I wonder whether it wouldn't be just as good to get a non-FF wheel. I went down to the hardware store and bought a pair of deep C clamps, and a two-foot length of 8-inch pine shelf board. I attached my wheel to the pine board, and then used the C clamps to attach the board to the top of my desk. Because of the width of the board, I was able to attach on either side of some under-desk protrubances that prevented me from clamping the wheel directly to the desk. Perhaps you could do something similar? HTH, -- Darryl Johnson "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:65gS6.7987$[email hidden]... > I am looking for a good wheel setup, but I have a unique requirement. > The desk I use has a lap drawer that is 5 inches deep. That's a very good suggestion, it might work. The desk I'm using is a two pillar desk, with a lap drawer running the full width between the two pillars. So there really isn't any space that is free of obstruction, but I noticed that there is a 1 inch by .5 inch (w x h) support running laterally under the front of the lap drawer. It's not sturdy enough to handle clamping loads near the middle, but it might be sturdy enough to handle clamping near the sides, where it is attached to the pillars. Actually any wheel with big enough clamps could clamp to it directly, but it is about 6 inches down from the top of the desk, so I doubt that any wheel has clamps big enough to grab it. Thanks for the idea, Hal "Darryl Johnson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:iJAS6.10950$[email hidden]... > I went down to the hardware store and bought a pair of deep C clamps, > and a two-foot length of 8-inch pine shelf board.
