Breaking 1:30 at Monza in Grand Prix Legends
A driver stuck at 1:30 at GPL's Monza got advice on smooth corner exits, braking technique and using GPL Replay Analyser, and was told to switch off throttle and braking help. Others compared Lesmo gear choices and car choices, and suggested limiting brake pedal travel with half a squash ball. Later posts discussed steering linearity and deadzone settings.
Automated summary.
Oz,
Probably you are trying to hard, I am no Monza expert (1:28:57), but you
should concentrate on getting the corner smooth, slightly slower than you
think you should and concentrate on getting speed OUT of the corner you will
definitely be able to break 1:30
Also try practicing at a few other circuits - eg. Watkins Glen, cause its
short and fun :)
Good Luck

Load your best lap and a 1.28 into GPL replay analyser
http://home.bip.net/martin/gplra/
It'll help you see straight away where you're losing time. Lesmo sounds
likely (try using 3rd gear out of lesmo 2. More traction less
wheelspin). Also exiting parabolica is likely too. I'd be able to get
into the 1.27's if I could get out of there faster :(
One more thing, which car? I have to thrash the knackers off the ferrari
to get a gnats under 1.30 but I can run low 29's all day in the lotus
and eagle.
Kev (1.28.41 - Got a replay if you want it)

and if you can send me your replay i would be greatful.

The ferrari is one of the best all round cars but it just lacks a bit of
top end speed at monza. Although, of course, there are people who run
28's in the ferrari too. (the cooper monza world record is 1.28.75!!!)
I've got pb's in different cars at different tracks. I can't drive the
lotus at zandy to save my life but I find it works best for me at monza.

Also braking is very important. If you brake too hard and lock the brakes
it disrupts the car, which will affect your turn-in and over time will make
you nervous and uncertain about braking. If the brakes lock you're braking
too hard, you only need to gently squeeze the brakes. Actually if the tires
squeel you're braking too hard as well.
Obviously lesmo 2 is a big corner at Monza, because it's followed by a very
fast section, so your exit from lesmo 2 is very important. The key to
getting a good exit is to get your speed and position right in the middle of
the corner. It's very easy to go into lesmo 2 too fast.
Also make sure you are taking Ascari flat out, and try to keep the car
pointed to the inside of the track at the turn in for T1.

I know it sounds like the easy option(and it is), but I have throttle and
brake help on....will this be slowing me down also?
I can drive with both switched off , but im a lot more confident driving
with them on.....
and I sometimes end up facing the wrong way coming out of lesmos 2!damn to

Yep, these are probably costing you a couple of seconds a lap at least. Turn
'em off!

DOH!
You should have said that earlier. :)
TURN THEM OFF!
They're costing you loads of time and interfere the the GPLness of being
at one with the car (man).

turned off for the first time and run sub 1:30s at Monza. Learning to
brake smoothly with a pedal that gives you no feedback is a major part
of the GPL challenge. You will be much slower initially - prepare to
start again from scratch!

Wow... you have the helps on, and can make it near 1:30? Great!
Try to learn accelerating out of turns without help, you can get
much more acceleration. Same for braking..
Sub-1:30 should be yours as soon as you manage a lotus or eagle without
helps.
btw: I have seen many cars pointing into wrong direction after lesmos
in online races (including my own ;)

If you haven't gotten your time under 1:30, and you've been playing the
game for over a year... Give up.
Then try to get under 1:06 at the Glen. ;)
If you've only been playing a few months or so, keep goin', baby... GPL

Handy GPL hint # 634
Get a squash ball and cut it in half (or some wads of paper wrapped in
packets with tape)
Calibrate the brake to maximum travel, then put the squash ball under
it. That way, when you hit the brakes, (a) the pedal only travels about
90% of it's distance and you are much less likely to fully lock the
brakes and (b) you get some 'feel' under heavy braking.

others (why break a usenet tradition?) but if you can do 1:30 in the
Ferrari, you should be able to do 1:29 or possibly even a 1:28 in the Lotus
or Eagle. I agree the driving aids will be holding you back, plus you're
not getting the full thrill out of controlling the cars if you computer is
helping you.
Just on exiting corners, I don't know how long you've been playing GPL, but
anticipating what the car is going to do is a really important skill, and it
only comes with experience. Eventually you get to the point where you don't
even have to see the car start to spin before you correct it, you sort of
already know you need to apply opposite lock, just because you know what
you've done with the throttle.
Some more good advice
- drive all the tracks
- use all the cars
- if you're having trouble learning a track - race there instead of just
doing training laps
- make sure the game is running at 36 fps (alt-f displays frame-rate)
- use a steering wheel with pedals, and force-feedback also helps
- don't put off learning the Nurburgring
:)

I got there by going DEEP into Parabolica - smooth around and early on the
gas out. I broke 1:30 for the first time in an Eagle.

This may or may not be what many refer to as trail or tail-braking but that
is whole different thread and not one I am all that interested in. All I
know is that the little bit of accelerator works for me with a PB of 1:28.54
at Monza (Eagle) and a negative GPLRank.
Hang in there.

shape not to impede the throttle as well, given that the pedals are
only 1" apart but 2" off the floor.
What I actually do is to keep about 10% throttle on while braking,
simply because it's natural, automatic, feels right for the car I'm
driving. On single axis this must have the same effect as limiting
braking to 90% or thereabouts. One day (when I can afford a new wheel
if it goes wrong) I'm going to be brave enough to cut wires c.f.
http://huizen.dds.nl/~jjcox/ (converting T2 to dual axis).
Then I'd probably have to re-learn driving GPL from scratch (and spend
a lot of time arguing the 'correct' definitions of trailbraking,
squashballbraking etc etc when I should be learning the Ring).

Wait! I just did 3 consecutive laps at 3.29.xx at LeMans in a Ferrari!!!
Heck, I felt like I'd just driven all 24 hours and won the thing... it's
that big of an accomplishment for me. I don't know who posted the tip of
trying the gear altered 'ring setup instead of Spa but it's really paid off
for me. Unfortunately, since dl'ing and installing Sarthe I have spent "NO"
time at any other track in GPL... this does not bode well for my Rouen time
improving.

I've always found it rather difficult to take Ascari flat out, unless I get
the perfect line into it, and then I'm also having to work hard to avoid
turning the wheel too much.
Are you sure you're getting enough speed out of Lesmo 2?
I've also checked my laps against the Aliens', and found that I was actually
losing time through Ascari.
Since then I've improved a bit - have done 1:27.67 in practice, and some
high 1:27s in online races.
In my experience you can gain time in *all* the corners at Monza, not just
Lesmo 2.

better traction out of the turn. A simple way to check is to do it in
2nd and make a mental note of when you shift up to 5th, then do it in
3rd and you'll see that you're in 5th about 100m earlier.

Clearly a setup problem. With default setup for example it's a lot
harder than with setups from Monza-Meister Leonardo Grandis.
True, my pb is 1:27.36 now. For some reason I loose most time in the
Para, a couple of tenths.. compared to the aliens my entry to para is
just as fast, and my exit is just as fast too, but in the slowest
section of the para I'm losing the time.. I don't understand it, I
take the same line, but when I give more throttle to compensate the
loss of speed I immediately loose my car, for my feeling I'm allready
driving on the edge..
And lesmo 1 and 2 are such weird corners.. you have to take them
super-smooth, without sliding the car. So if you take L1 and 2 right,
it will actually feel very slow..

Is it worth it though? You could spend five hours getting 0.25s faster at
Monza, when in the same time you could take 1s off at Mosport or Mexico, or
4s at the ring.

night ..only 20 mins or so......Got my laptimes to the same as with
throttle/brake help..1.30.5 ish...... so its now just a case of getting
all the braking points right...& squeeze the throttle gently coming out of
bends........
heres a quick lap
start/finish...up to 195ish...then a quick dab of the brakes..down a cog(is
this right).then its about 160ish around Curva Granda with flat
throttle....then back up to top gear.......around della....then brake (lots)
down to 2nd and drift through lesmos 1 then squirt the throttle then....hold
my breath through lesmos 2... still in 2nd(I take it this should be 3rd)
then up into top for ascari(I sometime give myself a small confidence lift
of throttle before...(I'll be losing time here aswell)....flat out... then
brake just after the rubber marks into parabolica...2nd gear...then start
easing more throttle after the curb on the right dissapears.....whilst
hanging on to the wheel so that I dont wipe out on the barrier on the
left(done that a few time I can tell ya)
My problem is confidence through lesmos2
But its hell of a lot more fun without the aids!!!!!!
Damn...You lot have converted me......
Thanks for all your help.....
Still have yet to try the squash ball thing!

Hmm... where can I get this piece of art?
Hmm... maybe another setup problem? Suspension? Maybe the aliens run
a more asymmetric (= undriveable by human) thing?
As for changing gears between Lesmos: I use a 2nd gear that just
redlines at the braking point for Lesmo 2. Then it depends:
for hotlaps I keep that 2nd for accelerating out of Lesmo2,
for safe racing laps I switch to 3rd early. (but only after the braking
zone of Lesmo 2, I like the brake power of the engine in 2nd :)

Yep, scrubbing too much speed in the turn, I think.
Looking at alien hotlaps it seems to me that they turn the wheel less in
Ascari, but somehow it keeps going round the corner (rather than into the
armco).
I think this is to do with the setup, but it may also be that they get a
better entrance and are therefore able to keep going without excessive
turning of the wheel.
I've used Ian Lake's setup at Monza since I started: I have a replay of him
doing it in 1:27.09, so I know it *can* be done!
On the other hand there may be some much better setups out there!

Interesting! Perhaps a visit to Schubi's site is in order!
I've always used Ian Lake's setup for Monza, which he has done 1:27.06 in,
but that was probably with GPL 1.0 (with the old tyre model and the
low-rider setups).

I certainly find that with Lesmo 1: it's really hard to get the car to turn
in properly. The best I can do is to get some power-on oversteer in that
corner, where the car seems to go round on rails if I apply the power at
just the right point.
With lesmo 2 I am still exiting in 2nd gear, so it may be possible for me to
pick up time by shifting to 3rd.
I've tried that a few times and haven't got it to work yet: it may be that
my gear ratios are a little higher than some.
Come to that I never really pay much attention to the setup, as I feel that
my driving skill is normally the limiting factor.
Maybe Monza is one of those places where setup matters more than usual!

A year or two ago I was struggling to break 1:30 at Monza as well.
I downloaded Greger Huttu's Lotus setup and a replay of his lap. The
biggest difference I noticed in his approach was that he upshifted to
third very early in the Parabolica (allows for more traction exiting the
corner before the long front straight). With his setup and using this
technique I was under 1:30 in less than half an hour of practice. A
year, or two, later, I still haven't gotten under 1:29 or in an any
other car besides the Lotus and the Eagle, but it's a start.
Now if I could just get under 2:00 at Rouen (I've got a long way to go).

Lots of practice is the only way to get faster.
I can do a 1:30.59 at Monza with a keyboard using the default Eagle

I think Ian has given up playing GPL - not sure what he's up to now!
I only have his Lotus setups, and have enclosed his setups for Monza and
Watkins Glen (note to NG police: sorry for the attachments, but they are
very small!).
Aside from those tracks I normally use Greger Huttu's setups (version 1, as
I find the GH2 setups literally undriveable!).

By practicing a lot at Monza :)
Because Monza is one of the easiest tracks to learn, it keeps me
fascinated how people can drive 1:26 laps there, on a track with only
a couple of corners.. And all the practice I do at Monza helps me
understand the car and the setups. If you want my replay and setup,
send a mail to [email hidden] and I'll mail it to you.

Me too, for all tracks except for Monza. Just the idea that he drives
those alien times with these setups helps me mentally :)
Andre
First! Thank you very much & all net cops yell at me for the attached
setups I Asked! :-) Now Ian's setups [for me] seem to stick like glue
on the tracks! Also the same with Chris Moses in the Eagle' and also
my man Tim Wheatley's Honda setups! I dont know how these guys
do it? but they do!
Ok now, you say you use Huttu's more but I find his setups so very
loose & [to me!] they're nothing like Ian's or C Moses or others! If
you like Ian's setup how do you use Huttu's? You can email me if it
is a long answer..ok? Tia.. Thom_j.
P.S. I know many move on but its sad to hear Ian has possibly left
GPL. {Btw I have both GH's 1z & 2z setups & both are real hard
to drive for me! phew!!}

No offense, but lots of practice in and of itself won't make you any faster.
Trust me - I've turned more laps this week(I took a week off from work) than I
have in the past 2 MONTHS. It hasn't helped. If I'm doing the same things as
always, I'm only practicing being slow... Problem is, doing something
different throws me off the track. I haven't figured out that 'zen' thing yet.

Practice *does* make perfect Eldred, but it takes longer sometimes than
others. Don't forget to use Replay Analyser LOADS to compare your laps with
someone a couple of seconds faster, and then when you figure out where you
can push harder, get straight back into GPL and do so!
Setups are worth spending 10 minutes on but NO MORE than 10 minutes - best
way is to make sure you steal the gear ratios from a hotlapper and then use
whatever other settings feel comfortable to you, leastways that's what
someone much much faster than me told me the other day and it seems to make
sense...
Good luck

download replays from hotlap sites and alternate between watching that
replay and watching mine, to see where he's faster. On line during
qualifying (or after I crash out or get tired) I will often "ride along"
with a fast guy on the server.
Sometimes I don't get anything useful this way (I can't slide through a
corner like Huttu and probably never will) but often I will see something I
can at least try - if it makes me faster great, if not at least I can
eliminate that as an option.
I use GPLRA too, but I only find it useful if I'm obviously much slower in
one specific area. I use the "time difference" check box in the Graph
window - if there is a significant "jump" at one point in the graph then I
know I really need to work on that area. Usually though it's just a
continuous line, with me getting farther and farther behind (the guy's just
better than me).

Sure it was - I went from 8:36 at the Ring to 8:32. That's a small amout for

I haven't seen anything that I'm able to use yet. Most of the guys can put the

basically just fudging over a setup that still doesn't work right.
Surely it's better to get the setup working properly for you rather than

Ok, now Kevin's statement. Would the roll bar settings affect the car in a
straight line? I understand how they might affect turning, though. My problem
at a low ratio setting, the car 'wanders' on the straight. I may not be
explaining it right, but it's like I have to constantly correct the steering
just to go straight. Lower steering ratios make this too difficult.

I'm very much a setup newbie but one of my GPL setup "crib sheets" says that
increasing the front toe-in gives "more straight line stability, more drag,
less grip in tight turns, never use negative toe-in at rear".
Don't know if that helps much Eldred, maybe if you look at several setups to
see what values other people use for front toe-in then you might find you
have a wacko setting?

Having any deadzone at all will give you a wandering car. Try setting
it to 0%.
This is my problem with F1RC. It seems impossible to get rid of the
deadzone (It feels that way, but looking at the on-screen steering
wheel while turning the wheel there seems to be no deadzone, weird.),
and I get a wandering car on the straights and unpredictable turn-in.

I'm at work atm so I can't check it for you.
The setup from L.Grandis is ofcourse more difficult to handle than for
example Alison's setups, Leonardo drives a 1:26.49 with this one, so I
can imagine this setup is a tad more difficult for you than Alison's
setup. Brake bias is more to the rear so you have to brake real
carefully and press the throttle just a little bit under braking to
stabilize the car.
But the point I was curious about was: does the car weave on the
straight, after Ascari for example? On my system it doesn't, as you
can see in my replay.
Too bad you live so far away, I'd love to test your system to see if
you have been driving with a bad system setup..
Perhaps you can visit a GPL'er in your neighbourhood to test GPL on
his system to see if there are any differences?
A friend of mine has allmost the same system as me, same wheel, but he
hasn't fine-tuned his settings and I'm 1-2 seconds slower on Monza on
his system..
Do check out Nunnini's and Alison's site, they are full with system
setup tips (I remember I got my deadzone tweaks from
www.simracingmag.com).

I use full linear as well, someone told me during my first week of GPL'ing
that that gave better control of the car. I think once you're used to one
way though the other way seems impossible, no matter which you're used to.

I use full linear as well - it's quite sensitive on the straights, but I get
better control in the corners.
Also, I just checked - my deadzone is 0% and always has been - I can fully
imagine how disastrous it would be to have a non-zero deadzone, as I would
never be able to make the small corrections needed to keep the car on the
straights!
Get rid of that deadzone!

I don't get this, can someone please explain. To me, having a deadzone
should 'prevent' a wandering car because it gives you more play on your
steering wheel before it moves far enough to go off straight. Therefore
you can keep the onscreen wheels straight easier whereas, with no
deadzone, I would imagine it to very difficult to keep the wheels
completely straight causing the car to wander.

I used to think the same way as you - that's why I never worried about deadzone
before.
The way I understand(now) it is this: The car naturally wants to deviate from
the straight line because of engine torque, camber, etc. Having a large
deadzone in the steering means that your minor corrections to the car's
direction take longer to show up. This makes the corrections seem MAJOR, and
you're constantly 'chasing' the car. With little(or no) deadzone, the
corrections are almost subconscious, thus not noticable.
Chuck, Andre - is that how it works?

(http://website.lineone.net/~richardn/) has this to say about the
linear setting.
Set the steering to fully linear. It may seem a bit weird at first,
but it permits better medium-high speed steering control (great for
Monza and Silverstone), makes it easier to catch slides and seems to
give you a better 'feel' for the car. I find trail braking almost
impossible without fully linear steering.
By the same token (if you are running version 1.1.0.3 or above) edit
core.ini, find the [ Hack ] section and set steer_ratio to 0. This
prevents the steering from progressively switching to a 7:1 ratio when
the speed drops below 60 MPH. This may seem like a good idea for
getting out of your pit stalls and getting round the tight hairpins at
Moncao, but in reality it really messes up your handling of the car at
these low speeds. For example, before I turned the hack off, I could
never drive Monaco/Sainte Dvote or Rouen/Nouveau Monde
consistently - I never felt I had full control of the car.

If Eldred has gotta as far as he has so far with a deadzone of 10%

Cheers Eldred, can't say I've noticed things as bad as that. Generally
I don't have too much difficulty going straight now. More of a problem
keeping the car from veering off under braking, though even this is less
so than it used to be say 2 or 3 weeks ago so perhaps it was a technique
thing, though I still have my linearity at about 2/3rds non-linear
because any more linear and the old problems start to reappear.
Ok, I'm off to get these utils to change my deadzone to see how things
pan out anyway. If I have any comments to make I'll start a new thread
about it. This one is getting way too long. :)

The wheels are almost straight, or they may be straight, but the car may
be pointed a little bit to one side. The problem with the deadzone is
that there isn't anything that tells you where the deadzone ends so
smaal adjustments are hard to do because you have to travel across a
deadzone of unknown size before the input starts to have any effect. So when
you try to correct the steering, you will probably overcorrect and start
to weer off in the other direction.

Although i've set my linearity to full-linear, I've never played with the
deadzone - how do I find out what % deadzone I have? Even tiny movements of
my wheel (MS non-FF) make the GPL onscreen wheel move, but someone has
pointed out that that doesn't necessarily guarantee zero deadzone (which
doesn't make sense to me, but I'm interested to know anyway)
Thanks

shelves 3yrs ago and I have tried many parts of the linear spectrum to see
what was best for me! I had several I liked but I ended up with the linear
all to the way to the left. I can still run it easily in other places on the
slide
but I opt for full left..

No, I haven't. Actually a couple of weeks ago I experimented with this
(again). In the end it seems a matter of personal preference and not a
'must' setting. Some of the fastest guys have it on, some have it off.
I feel that I have perfect control with the ratio to 1, it's just
something you have to get used too, and it's quite handy at the
hairpins.
But.. after reading Nunnini's text I think I'm going to turn it off
again for a while to see if it helps..
Nunnini says it helps at Sainte Devote at Monaco, but the major
disadvantage of this is is that you have to set your steering ratio
WAY lower at Monaco to get around the hairpin, making steering much
more harder for me..

That said, I do use full linear exlusively as well.
