Leadfoot-annoying vidcard error

Hi I have a Radeon 64ddr running on a P3 550 with 128 megs of Ram. I have downloaded the demo but find when starting a race, annoying little black squares appear on the screen and stay there. I am running on D3D, this occurs even under autodetect. I have not yet tried running in s/w mode, given that the card is quite good and the machine should be more than enough, considering it runs all other racing games quite quickly and fast with no slowdowns, even the latest games... I have a Radeon 32ddr and have no problems with the full vesion.
