Notable threadFlame warPapyrus updates GPL D3D patch; DGF row follows
Marc Collins reported an updated GPL Direct3D patch (1.0.0.1) on Papyrus's site that fixed the wrong flag colors, added GeForce 3 support and anisotropic filtering, and cured the distorted trees and vanishing fences; users with GeForce and Radeon cards reported much better image quality, though some menu items failed to display. The thread then turned into a long argument with David G Fisher over GPL devotees, F1RC and F1 TV viewing figures.
Automated summary.

I am not sure about the executable patch file itself (I will try it after
work, we are in the morning on this side of the pond - so we just get to
download first for a change, he he), but indeed the readme at papy's site
says:
Updated for this version
------------------------
Fixed the incorrect flagger color bug, and improved visual image quality:
anisotropic filtering can be enabled if your graphics card and drivers
support it for a very nice improvement at no framerate hit, and the
rendering of transparent images is improved at a small framerate cost, if
you choose to use this, no more moth eaten trees or fences.
It also mentions the Geforce3 as supported card.
Have fun,
Xavier.

Read the readme carefully, you have to adjust your core.ini, some new
options must be added. Everything works perfect, even the anstropic
filtering (or whatever it's called :) works great!
But unfortunately the menu-flickering problem remains.

Downloading and comparing I see this one is 1.0.0.1 and the previous one was
1.0.0.0
Same filename though but also slightly different file sizes.
Dale.
In particular it adds Anisotropic filtering support which fixes the burry
textures, so you can now get anisotropic filtering without needing 12.xx
drivers and a registry hack (I now have anisotropic filtering working with
6.50), and it fixes the ugly trees / vanishing fences problem.
GPL is now back looking how it used to with Glide on a 3dfx card :)
Many thanks to Papy and Grant Reeve (I presume) for another excellent
update.

How do you assign options to your wheel and change the linear settings and
etc when they don't show up in the menus????
Sometime they do if you move the mouse over them but some of them never show
up.

David, the other David has fooled you, unfortunately. He refers to me
"blasting" the Papy "fix". If you read the thread at the HG forums, my
"blast" (you know, where I was a real meanie) illicited a grand total of
eight smiley faces in response. There wasn't the least bit of hostility
towards me, nor me towards them (two smiley faces by me).
The smiley face count, and it's importance, cannot be disputed by any man.
It was all roses.

PS Hobbies are, by their very nature, odd. I think golf, football,
collecting stamps, and whining about GPL are all totally weird ways to
spend time. But that's people for you. Each of us is a uniquely insane
individual. The day all our insanities merge will be really sad.

Yes. Its not playable online, which would be ok if the AI wasnt COMPLETELY
stupid. I really wanted it to be good, but it just isn't. The AI seems to
be especially stupid when you are on a good qualifying lap and they insist
on stopping right in front of you on the racing line, or when they brake
about a mile too late for the last chicane at suzuka and send me flying in
to orbit managing to land on the ferris wheel ;). Ok ok, maybe i exaggerate
a bit.

I took a peak at that forum, and it's quite anti-F1RC, with numerous people

I think that David L. Cook was more talking about "Rally Championship" when
stating the term RC. Anyway, the sentence "RC fell on its ass" can be

So you judge things on their age do you, and not by their quality? If GPL
is poor simply because it's 3 years old, this must make the Spice Girls a

You were claiming there was something wrong with playing GPL and the only
way you chose to back that statement up was by saying it was three years
old. Hence you were claiming F1RC is better than GPL just because it's
newer.
I never compared Mozart to GPL, I compared the Spice Girls to Mozart,
because the Spice Girls are newer, yet Mozart is obviously superior. Hence
your argument is invalid.
....but then you already knew what I meant. I presume you find pretending
to misunderstand me easier than backing up your previous statement.

worse. F1RC is newer than GPL, and worse. Is that hard to follow? DGF was
criticising GPL on the basis of being 3 years old, which is clearly no sane
basis for criticising anything.

Just look at the number of posts here relating to F1RC, RC2000 and GPL. You
really think there's just a handful of people here playing GPL? GPL gets
over ten times the number of posts that F1RC and RC2000 get.

There were almost 30,000 posts about RC2000 at the HG forums (until they
changed), and GPL has only about 4,000.
There are 13,000 posts for F1RC there, and it's only been out a few months.
Depends where you go. This is the GPL fan club headquarters. How many people
in this world do you really think are still playing GPL? It only sold 40,000
to begin with, and who knows how many of them were returned.

Not sure what the point is here, not really been following the thread
but not sure what the number of posts to a forum has got to do
with anything. Most RC posts in HG were problems prior to and
after the numerous patches that have been released to make this
game the mediocre product it is today. Most F1RC posts are moans
about "where is the patch" and the fact that they are all going to
have to buy F1RC2 in a few months.
The relatively few GPL posts are from guys who have finally
discovered that GPL really is the most fun you can have whilst
sitting down. Once they've proclaimed there allegiance they
are then too busy playing GPL to post to forums.

Gee, let's think about this for a minute. It's most likely due to the
fact that these games have many more problems than GPL. Not to hard to
figure...

Is it a gripe against GPL, something you don't like about it or find

Nothing against GPL at all. It's an excellent sim.
Like many people, I find the comments by some GPL fans about other sims to
be ridiculous. By their comments, they are also criticizing the merits of
the people who play them.

You're right, it is strange. Most companies don't support their
products that long (Thanks, Papy!), not do they usually make the quality
high enough for such staying power. You've given the best tribute for

Actually, the GPL forum at High Gear Forums has about 14,000 posts
since it was created, as about 10,000 posts were deleted in a
technical glitch a few months back. Also, the GPL forum at HG is
relatively new (1 year old) versus the RC forum which has been around
a couple years. Given the same amount of time, the GPL forum would
probably have close to 30K posts, if not more.
I just dont want anyone to be misled by misinformation.

Three years from now, F1RC won't be getting the same support because there
will be newer versions due to it's success (GPL failed and the MTM series
was ended when TRI and MS parted).

GPL did not fail. If you think it failed, then F1RC also failed.

It's been going on for three years because that's how long GPL has been at
the top. I haven't bought every racing game/sim in the last three years,
but the ones I have bought have offered little competition to GPL.
For instance - F1 2000 had poor graphics, a slow 3d engine and poor AI. GP3
had iffy physics and poor graphics. TOCA 2 had arcade physics. Rally
championship felt like the cars had no suspension. Rally masters had
dreadful controller setups, meaning it couldn't be played at all on my
wheel.
There were a few decent titles, GP 500, Superbike 2000, MBTR and Sports Car
GT were all solid 8/10 games, but when given the option of playing those
game and playing GPL, they don't get a look-in.
Basically, it all comes down to the sheer thrill of controlling the GPL
cars. The man against machine battle. Trying to put the 400 bhp down on
the track without losing the rear end, catching the spins, keeping cool
enough to avoid locking the brakes at a crucial point. And trying to do all
this better than everyone else on Vroc.
No other game can offer all this for me.

Wrong............again.
I was beta testing MTM2 almost 3 years and 5 months ago. I know because I
have the MTM2beta 1 CD in front of me marked 2-3-98. It was released in the
early summer of 98. My track for it was completed in August '98.

How many posts there are on any particular forum doesn't prove anything.
LegendsCentral have boards for every type of racing game/sim yet their
modern F1 boards, or their N4 boards have virutally no posts, yet GPL has
18,000. That's because GPL players hang out at LegendsCentral, whereas
RC2000 players hang out at HG. r.a.s is not GPL fans headquaters, in fact
most GPL players I know have never heard of it.
Anyway popularity is an extremely poor guide to quality or worth. The worst
albums sell the best, the worst programs on tv get the most viewers, the
worst films gross the most money. Popularity just proves how many idiots we
share this rock with.

HG is not a single game specific web site like Legends Central, yet RC2000
and F1RC have a huge amount of posts compared to other games (GP3,
F12000/CS, N4, GPL).
I was trying to remember how this topic started, and it was your post which
said, "Just look at the number of posts here relating to F1RC, RC2000 and
GPL. You
really think there's just a handful of people here playing GPL? GPL gets
over ten times the number of posts that F1RC and RC2000 get."
I simply pointed out that it depends on the forum (just like your Legends
Central point). If "How many posts there are on any particular forum doesn't
prove anything", then why did you make the comment in the previous
paragraph? :-)

First many [more likely all as they aren't a huge group] who work for
Papy past, present & probably in the future do! go that extra mile to
take work apon themselves at home!
Am I a "Papy lover" as DGF eludes many are here? Not me! I have
many other sim titles from many other publishers! It would matter to
me if Black & Decker had their name on a title as long as its good!
Do I think Papy did a fantastic' thing by working on a patch for a 3
year old sim' to give it many more months and maybe years of play
time? Absolutely!!
[fwiw] The question seems to be: Is it about the heavy posting here
with GPL or someone having an "axe to grind " with those that do?
Odd!! Very Odd!! Thom_j.

It was released in August of 1998. It's false to say 3 years, in my "Price

At least you agree with me that MTM2 is a great game because it's unique and
is a great arcade racing game. It has no relation with the success of a
serious racing simulation.

Yes, it's
good for an older game, but like I pointed out with MTM2 (even bigger
community), it's not unheard of with no sequels available.
F1RC has 13,000 in 5.5 months (just 3 months since the release of the game).
Bet those numbers shoot up after the patch.
GP3 21,000 in 15 months.
F12000/CS 19,000 in 15 months.
F1RC is clearly the dominate F1 sim of today. Honor it and feel blessed.

What was asked of me? He proved the total was 14,000. If you are referring

What were your estimates again? You said mine were ridiculous? Called me
names?
From (at the bottom of the page): http://www.motorsportstv.com/f1.htm
More Formula One TV Details
"RPM 2Night" commentator Robin Miller of The Indianapolis Star gives some
details about the Formula One TV contract:
TV revenue is $350 million annually.
$180 million of the TV revenue is distributed to the teams.
However, the money is distributed to teams based on performance. McLaren and
Ferrari each receive $22 million, while even a team with no points last year
like British American Racing (BAR) received $6 million.
"Television became Ecclestone's main focus, not the paying customers. He
recognized the potential of TV and how little of it was being utilized. 'I
don't care if nobody shows up at the track, it's television that will drive
this sport,' he said nearly 10 years ago when an estimated 50 million people
were watching. Today, 350 million tune in to a Grand Prix 17 times a year."
"The Economist" Takes A Major Shot at F1's Ecclestone; TV Details Given
Britain's leading business magazine, The Economist, takes a major swing at
F1 czar Bernie Ecclestone in its July 15th issue and, in the process, gives
us a peek at F1 TV details:
The 17 races pull in a total of more than 5 billion viewers.
The stated TV revenue for 1999 is $241 million, a number which most people
assume is severely understated.

I wish schools would deviate from cramming formulas and
algebra into students and instead tried to instill some sense of how big big
numbers actually are. Possibly trying to develop some kind of intuition to
guard against organistions, and I don't just mean the FIA, but also
environmental groups, governments and NGO's trying to prove their point with
(doctored) statistics. Stimulate some orginal thought for once, but I guess
that would be very dangerous 'cuz you can't really mark it.
Anyway, let's have a stab at an estimate of the number of people watching
the race live.
5 billion people in the world. Assuming most people sleep 8 hours a day,
1/3rd will be sleeping at the time of the GP. i.e. potential audience
reduced 3.4 billion.
Suppose half of these people have access to a TV (very generous,
irrespective of it showing F1 live or not), i.e. 1.7 billion potential
viewers.
From recent viewing figures (www.humo.be) 197.170 out of a population of 4.5
million watched the Canadian GP in Flanders (early Sunday evening here...
absolutely no competion from anything), that's... <calculator> 4.4%.
Extrapolating to the world audience (irrespective of the distribution of
intereest which does exist) we get: 4.4% out of 1.7billion... <calculator>
74.8 million viewers worldwide.
This is extrapolated from the very generous assumption half the world's
population has access to live F1 broadcasts and taking viewing numbers from
a more than average motorsport minded region of Europe.
350million? -Nah... never, just not possible _at all_.
If you count every scrap of F1 footage shown of a race, ever, perhaps. But
certainly not live.

the one who needs some more education. Eliminating 1 billion people from the
world population is not a good way to begin a lecture on statistics.
Every time there is a "ratings" topic, we always have people who must doubt
them.
Also, do you have any idea whatsoever how popular F1 is in Asia, compared to
the rest of the world? Location of a ratings sample absolutely does matter.
For instance, only about 250,000 people out of 275 million in the U.S. watch
each F1 race.
NBC had 3 million viewers on avg. for their reg. season games in the U.S.
alone. 15 million avg. for each game in the Finals (U.S.).
Any idea how many people world wide watch the NFL's Super Bowl?
350 million world wide for a F1 race is certainly realistic, especially
since it is broadcast in about 80 countries, and has the same type of
popularity as soccer.
Who said anything about "live" viewership anyway? I tape races that come on
at a really inconvenient hour. What really matters to advertisers is how
many people watch the race when it's initially broadcast in a particular
location, live or not.
An individual can always doubt the "numbers". Fact is, advertisers who
invest billions base their investment on ratings. Advertisement contracts
are negotiated based on these ratings (or do they come to Jan V.?) Do you
really think these estimated numbers are given little priority with regard
to accuracy? Do you think Bernie's 12 year old nephew was put in charge of
totalling these viewership numbers? Do you think advertisers don't don't do
a little bit of checking? Come on Jan, F1 is too big for you to believe that
the numbers aren't important enough to all involved to be thoroughly
researched.
F1, even if the number of people who tune in is 335 million per race instead
of 350 million, is still a phemonemally popular sport, dwarfing almost
everything else in comparison, including NASCAR

Did you actually read this?

That many already? -Well, ok, I wasn't aware of that, but it doesn't make
that big an impact on the calculation (88million).

As it should be, certainly when a completely proposterous number is claimed.

Yes, F1 is only mildly popular in the US, so using an US viewing figure
would have been very unfair. That's why I chose a local figure as people
here are fairly F1 minded.
Yes, F1 is very popular in some parts of Asia, but I think that is offset by
the lack of TV sets there. China, India, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan are
part of Asia too and I very much doubt 50% of the population there has
access to a TV (let alone F1). This is why I think I was very generous with
my assumption half the world is in a position to watch F1.

Not a clue... is it broadcast live around the world at all? -I assume
Germany and Japan (both countries with a large US military presence) get it,
but it sure isn't "on" here.
> 350 million world wide for a F1 race is certainly realistic,
> especially since it is broadcast in about 80 countries, and

How many countries are there in total? And what percentage of global
population lives there? How many of those have access to the coverage?
I.e. what is the potential audience? -I have a good feeling my 2 billion was
pretty generous.
> Who said anything about "live" viewership anyway?
I'm talking 'bout live viewership because the person who released that quote
made it sound that way. If it had said 350million people are _exposed_ to
the coverage of each race in some form or other, I'd have no trouble
believing that. Watching implies "wanting to see", IMO.
> <snip>

Ah yes, anything someone on Bernie's staff says is true, because he's
wealthy and important. Anything I say is rubbish, because I'm just an
average Joe.
You come across as such a snob David, it makes the hairs on the back of my
neck stand up.
Not at all, I'm just saying they're presented in their most positive light
and in a slightly misleading way.
> F1, even if the number of people who tune in is 335

"...tune in at some time to watch some part.." rather. ;-)

No question, there aren't many global sports (Nascar is hardly a global
sport, unfair comparison) which can rival it as Olympic meetings or WC
Soccer matches aren't scheduled every two weeks.
But 350million people watching the races together... no.
