Apologies initially for basically nicking a question from the excellent
interview with Maxx (http://jc.simracing.dk/), but I wanted to ask this to
all fellow r.a.s.ers anyway.
Evidently a lot of people are looking forward to this sim, and even planning
the next upgrade around it. Perhaps there is also a perception that it will
become the next GPL for many, in terms of the amount of people's leisure
time it'll take up.
Of course, no-one for sure currently knows if it will be "the next GPL";
that's not what I'm asking. What I'm wondering is, if WSC becomes that big,
do we think GPL will suffer, in terms of the enthusiasm for it?
I like to think I'm becoming more involved in the unique GPL community, and
I'd hate it as just as I'm evolving from pathetic driver to (currently) a
bad driver (see my GPL rank), I'm left wishing WSC had never been released.

Will World Sports Cars draw players away from GPL?
Craig Jones asked whether WSC would hurt the GPL community. Some said they race GPL for its realism and would move to whatever drives better, others that GPL's era and tracks would keep it alive alongside a modern sports car sim; Gregor Veble and Kevin Gavitt noted WSC would be open to editing and was due to include a 1967 Ferrari F1 car, and a claim that WSC lacked online play was corrected.
Automated summary.
WSC will have a 917, if it is as good as GPL it will be bye bye GPL

It's irrelevant. It's not important at all, it's just a game. Do people
mourn still with Nascar Racing 1? No, we have moved to better sims. Like we
will move to a better sim if WSC is superior to GPL. Stop making this like
GPL is essential in our life :-/ It's not, it's just a bloody sim.
Whatever realistic it might be, whatever entertaining it is to us. It
happened with World Circuit, the original Nascar Racing.
They did not suffer, because "suffering" is irrelevant for a racing game.

Guess we started late.
Lets look at the evidence here. (Though there may be something I do not know
about)
1. GPL came to market some time in 1998.
How many new sims since then? Chances are pretty good that WSC will come and
go like the rest.
If there is reason to believe otherwise let the world know.

I beg to differ.
WSC appears to be given the same freedom and care that GPL was given
during production, I suspect that WSC will make at least as much
impact on the community as GPL has.

If it's all it's cracked up to be, then GPL will go the way of all
flesh[1] and WSC will prevail over all things. After all, the
unbelievably-hyped "open architecture" (it had better be) ought to make
it fairly simple to make 1967 F1 cars....
[1] Yeah, I know. But "the way of all CDs, disks or even cassettes

GPL simulates driving a 1967 F1 car, WSC simulates driving modern sports cars.
Why would I want to stop driving those old machines because I can drive the
new ones? I have to split my racing time between modern and old F1 and Nascar
already, so one more sim is just reducing the time for each, but will not
exclude any of them.

better, then I will move to it (and probably play GPL when I get frustrated

rank...the problem with WSC is that it is going to have a ton of cars (lots
of add on cars) and it seems it will be easy to make/modify the tracks...so
issues of equal playing field may come up...Look at SCGT. People just keep
making better cars...You don't hear people talking about racing the original
cars to get good times...they just make a car with more horsepower and more
grip and turn faster times...false sense of improvement. If WSC gets out of
hand in this aspect (it shouldn't be bad online...I think they will have
good cheat detection for online racing) then I might have to go back to GPL
for some even racing.
We will see. In general, though, I think the pack will flock to WSC, but
they won't forget about GPL.

I don't think the issue is the time period...I don't think the majority of
the racers out there race GPL JUST because it is 1967 F1 cars...I think they
are attracted by the challenge of the realistic driving model. The problem
with the "open architecture" is that we will be getting all sorts of cars
and it may become difficult to get an even race (how do I know he hasn't
added 50 more HP to his car or decreased his drag coefficient?). This may
not be an issue for the guys that just tool around the track...but it may
become an issue in league racing and any sort of hotlap sites/WSC rank or
whatnot...Hopefully the wests will be clever enough to implement some system
that can verify the cars (maybe build a result submission system into the
game that automatically sends results and information about the car to an
email address...this way people can't fake the results). Hopefully all of
this stuff is taken into consideration and we will have a great sim for
competition.

checking system that will report any mismatches between the cars. It's
been done in the flight sim world before with Fighter Squadron, and that
one works brilliantly online despite being fully open for modifications.

GPL will only suffer if WSC will be a better sim than GPL is.
And it's about time that someone makes a better sim than 3-year old
GPL..
But before I will uninstall GPL, WSC must have all the cars and tracks
available for GPL, and do it better in every department :)

I don't care, as it will take a LONG time until I can drive a 67 Ferrari

Well I gotta admit that I came very late to GPL, late last year to be
exact, I've had a GPL 'holiday' for about 6 months and have just started
racing again (to be exact I've just started relearning how to drive the
damn thing!) - nothnig else race-sim wise has matched the 'feel' of GPL
(for me at least)
I'll be getting WSC for sure, but GPL will stay, we all need variety.

If this is true, GPL will keep the pole position in racing sims.

much have online racing, check out

I would HOPE that car and track makers NOT waste thier time replicating
GPL in WSC. WHY ??? If GPL if one of the better sims out there...even if
WSC supasses it...then I would hope the focus of WSC are the many other
areas of sim racing that are not up to GPL's level of expertise. Just like
there are seemingly dozens of F1 sims...yet lots of users keep asking for
more F1 sims, or patches for other products like Nascar Heat. Modern F1
has at least 3 fairly serious offerings and several more one-off sims like
Lankor's racer.
So doing another modern f1 is just duplicating what is already available. I
bet TRUSRS85 can tell where I'm going..:)...but with so many tracks and
series not covered, I would once again hope WSC is prodded to provide racing
for DTM or Endurance FIA races, or Aussie Touring Cars. Or ALMS and Grand
Am or Euro Sports cars or Cart or Super Tourers or or or...I could go
on...my point, which I've almost forgotten is...
We don't need WSC to improve GPL, it's fine, the private sector can keep
it fresh for a while longer. We don't need more modern F1 sims. We don't
need another and another Nascar Sim. We need Online Endurance racing where
teams of drivers can share the same car, we need American Open Wheel racing,
we need sedan racing(touring cars). Hopefully the shipped version of WSC
will cover the Sportscars and the private sector can fill in the rest.

Sadly I feel we do not
have one [not one] really good F1 sim to date except GPL and this is a
piece of history that I lived thru! It was a great time for F1racing and so
many other genres of racing but we can't set ourselves into 1967 all the
time!
I love *all* motor racing! Even the Goofy riding lawn'mower races on
SpeedVision crack me up & if I were able I'd probably try it too!...lol
I wish we just had one new-good F1 or open-wheel sim to race! Icr2
was fantastic for me but I do not understand why F1' sims fall short in
one way or another.. I boggles my mind..
I hope WSC is everything it appears it's going to be and much more!
Only the final release will tell...eh? I still wish one of these PC gamer
companies would finally get at least one F1 sim right! It is frustrating
with so many "close but no cigar" F1 sims out now!! Phew!!
Cheers Thom_j.

You have a point there, Dave. However, I think the idea behind
replicating a GPL car and track in WSC is to allow us to compare GPL
and WSC regarding the physics of the sims on a level playing ground.
Nothing more.
I expect the initial release of WSC to feature mainly Le Mans cars
(those are the "sports cars", after all) and I hope to see a historic
GT supplement later on.

Then you will love F1RC. :-P
DGF
I loved F1RS [& I might start running it again??] but as soon as they went
into the "degrade" of that shitty MGPRS & it pissed me off to no end that
it wouldnt run correctly on my system back then! So I called and emailed
Ubi I got NO help from them what so ever! Nothing!!
So when I felt I had been used as just another stupid' consumer that they
cared less about via any support I said F***It & decided never to buy a
Ubi product again! They clearly didnt care about me so I defiantely didnt
need their bullshit! I have never bought one title since and I wont!!
So this is why I trash Ubi and they deserve it!! I decided, If they can not
answer a few minor questions on just one title why should I bother?
Oddly when I first bought F1RS and had any problems I had two great
techs at Ubi that would bust their humps to help me but they were fired
and ever since I saw a "no help" policy from the other techs!
Sad but true! Anyway thats why no more Ubi for me DGF!!
Thom_j.
P.S. Sorry for the pooly structured ro'on sentences but recalling these
events got me POe'd all over again...lol

Especially the automated telephone menus. I wouldn't buy too many things the
rest of my life if tech support/customer service was the highest priority.
The bigger the company, the worse their customer service is usually going to
be.

But if the online stinks then
I'll be forced to play more GPL. The community itself shouldn't suffer. It'll just change
games. I'm also one of the ones you mentioned that is planning an upgrade around it.
