Hi, I developed a problem recently where about 5 minutes into N4 (D3D, Papy patched version 4.1.1, 1024 x 768 - 16), it locks up, playing whatever sound it stopped on, in a constant drone. It has happened during a race, practice and replays. I have reinstalled and the same thing happens. I tried reinstalling without the Papy patch and the same thing happens. I am currently running the latest drivers on my: Radeon DDR 64 Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Other specs are: Athlon 1.2 gz 512 ram Win98SE Thrustmaster Nascar Pro Digital Wheel What's confusing is it works fine for a while, 50-60 fps with everything on, menus, etc. Also, ALL other sims run fine: GPL, N Legends, N3, F1 2000, F1CS2000, N Heat. I suppose one would say "just run the others" but I would like to be way better at N4 and only get about 5 mins. in before I have to shut down and reboot. Would appreciates any comments and/or advice! -Brian
I thought I had this figured out until you said D3D. Are you sure you're not running OpenGL? Because I know that there is only one set of Radeon OpenGL drivers that are known to work with N4, those being the 7041 drivers, and the symptom of having the wrong drivers is exactly as you described. Actually OpenGL is faster than D3D in this situation anyway, so what I would recommend doing is sticking the OpenGL dll from the 7041 drivers into your N4 directory and then switching N4 to OpenGL. The file you are looking for is called atio9xag.dll. That's how I'm running it and I don't have any lockups. Before I did that I had the same problem you described. If you want to try this but can't find a copy of the 7041 drivers let me know and I will e-mail the dll to you. It's only about 1.2 meg. Are you overclocking any of your components? When I ran my AMD 1.2 at 1.4 I would get this. I believe it was a heat issue for me. I added a bigger hs/f and it stopped locking up. Then ambient temps went up with summer and the lockups came back, so I backed off to 1.33 and it's stable as a rock. Try taking off the case and pointing a big house fan at the computers guts. If you can run a race in N4 like that, the computer's cooling system is suspect. AMD's do run kinda hot. -- ============================ elh4jj at hotmail <------------------ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| "Brian Mc" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sDUV6.163386$[email hidden]... > Hi, > I developed a problem recently where about 5 minutes into N4 (D3D, Papy > patched version 4.1.1, 1024 x 768 - 16), it locks up, playing whatever sound > it stopped on, in a constant drone. Yup, sounds like an overheating problem if you can still hear the sound when the video freezes. Especially given the fact it is running for a while before locking up. Stop overcloking anything that you are currently OCing, make sure you have good airflow through the case and then try it. If all else fails, try the previous idea, open your case and try a house fan pointed toward it. Those AMD's (I luv 'em, dont get me wrong) run hot hot hot. Make sure you have the heat sink on the CPU correctly and a fan attached properly as well. I'm not familiar with the Radeon line, I uses GF's, but if the video card just has a heat sink, you may want to try a cooling fan on it too. Thanks for the replys, guys. No, I'm not computer literate enuf to overclock and I'm running the AMD chip fan and two case fans, front one "in", rear one "out" so I don't think It's a heat issue. My VIA System Monitor program reports temps at 80o CPU and 76o case. That sounds pretty cool to me. I've tried to run in OpenGL (without the dll file Haqsau spoke of) and the same thing happens, looping would be the correct term. Perhaps Haqsau will send it to me. Thanks again for the advice, I'll keep working at it! -Brian www.brianmclernon.com "Brian Mc" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sDUV6.163386$[email hidden]... > Hi, > I developed a problem recently where about 5 minutes into N4 (D3D,Papy > patched version 4.1.1, 1024 x 768 - 16), it locks up, playing whateversound > it stopped on, in a constant drone. You didn't mention your motherboard (I think). I had the same problem w/ my old Gigabyte because it didn't have and AGP 2.0 compliant slot and the Hercules MX card I installed required it. I rebuild my system w/ an AGP 2.0 compliant mobo (and a Herc GTS Pro card) and the lockups w/ N4 are gone. -pw

I have had the same problem and I THINK I have it covered now. In my case, the problem was the VIA chipset on the motherboard. I have downloaded the latest Bios (I have an Abit KT7A-RAID) which has a new option called something like "PCI Latency". This was default at 1, I have now set it to 15 and have not seen the locking up anymore. The real test will be on Wednesday in my league race, though. But I'm very hopeful. --- Joeri J.
