I have just started playing N4 online with a 56k modem (connecting @ 45k). I am thinking of switching to cable when its available. What kind of 'pings' are other cable users getting? I am currently getting pings at 139 - 600. When I play now, it is difficult to pass because the opponents are either sliding across the screen or they disappear completely right as I am ready to pass. I assume this has to do with either my connection or the connection at the server side. Just looking for some other users experiences in switching to cable if this will help my situation. Thanks all for your help, Gary

I get pings in the 50s with DSL in N4 and as low as 28 in GPL (VROC) but 139 is very good for a 56K modem. My pings usually range from 40-70. You'll still see cars popping in & out now & then, but it'll no longer be due to your connection, just the other drivers. If you can afford it, I'd say go for it. -- Fester

139 is not the norm. I am lucky to get that. Norm is about 200. Kirk House wrote:

Depends what kind of server you are connecting. I've been able to ping a server like Papy Loop servers at 23ms, while other server I consider good are in the 83-111ms range. So, yes, depending on how full your area is, expect a huge increase in quality of multiplayer game play. -- Sincerely, Mark F. -- SimGoRacing -- http://www.simgoracing.com "GK" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I have just started playing N4 online with a 56k modem (connecting @ > 45k). Gary, I too race with 56k and pings to my own dedicated server range from 190-220 and there is a little wobble like you mention but I find the guys that are blipping in and out generally have connection issues of their own. We race 12-15 guys regularly and I have never had a problem that I would attribute to my connection. That said, you would greatly benefit from a cable or DSL connection for more than just racing. It also would help your racing connection better, but other guys in the races with 56k will continue to blip and wobble even when you have a faster connection. SR

It depends on your Cable provider. Here in Northern Virginia, we have Cox Cable Fairfax, which uses the RoadRunner service. Until recently, racing online was IMPOSSIBLE due to their network problems. It still isn't perfect. During the worse times, we were seeing latencies exceeding 1000ms. For like 4 months, any attempt at online racing was met with disappointment. Recently, I can race _most_of the time. It is definetly a lot better, but still no where what it should be. The morale is just because you have a fat pipe, it may have latency problems that prohibit online racing. -Larry "GK" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
