Right, downloaded DxTweak plus some other utils that I didn't use in the
end... still, loaded up DxTweak and set my deadzone for both x and y
axis to 0 and then booted up GPL.
Reset my linearity just a tad more linear from its current setting of
about 2/3rds non-linear proceeded to Rouen which was the next track that
I had planned to practice on anyway.
Whoa!! Cars a bit wobbly on the straight now coz I don't need to be so
accentuated with the steering wheel, also I'm oversteering into corners
and running up curbs a bit too much. Tell myself not to put so much
input in, smaller is better. Mmm, this is not bad. Hard braking still
in a straight line and first couple of laps aren't too shabby either.
Under 2 mins but not near my PB of 1:57.79 with the wheel.
I hit F3 and think about shifting slightly more linear and then, at the
last possible second decide, 'Oh, Sod it!! Let's shift it right over!'.
Back on track with full linear now and the car is now needing very
little input to get the wheels turning. Once again plenty of
oversteering towards curbs on the inside, but somehow what I'm sure
would have been a big mess under the old settings I managed to grab hold
of each time and keep the car going down the track.
By lap 10 and the laps are getting better with some already in the low
1:58s and high 1:57s and then I manage one just 1/100th off my PB. I'm
still not consistent, and I'm sure that with a lap that I get everything
right on and my old time is going to tumble. By lap 16 I'm starting to
get quite aggressive with my driving as my confidence grows, perhaps too
aggressive as I drift too wide and brake too late on nearly every other
corner all the way up to the back stretch, but I manage to keep the car
going and the last 2 corners are pretty good. My next lap is rather
poor though, but as I come to the end of it what do I see but a 1:57:47
for the previous lap staring back at me from the pit board. Yeah!!
Ok, off to Monza where my best is 1:28.23. Now I'm getting the hang of
this and I'm in the mid 1:28s pretty early, but can't quite put in a lap
better than my current best time with a best of 1:28.37. Still, there
are times when the cars well out of shape and yet I'm now able to
somehow wrestle it all back in line so much easier. And then, on lap
16 a manage a 1:28.05. Great stuff!!
So, all I can say is. "I'm a BELIEVER!!" Less than 35 laps with the
new settings and already 2 new PBs. Now, how about that Ring time? :)

Zero deadzone and full linearity transform GPL driving
Peter Ives reported that setting zero deadzone in DXTweak and more linear steering in GPL improved his control and lap times dramatically. Others tried it with similar results, and the thread became a Nurburgring lap-time discussion with replay swaps and tips on braking, shifting and the throttle 'hack'.

Outstanding! Glad to see how well it worked for you. I can see

I just did the same: 0%/0% deadzone, down from 5%/5% (already at almost
fully linear). Went tooling around the Ring. Oh, much much nicer. It's as if
someone went in and tightened a bunch of loose bolts. I no longer have to
wait for the force feedback to transmit: it's always there. Glad the
weekend's almost here.

Even more so now using my FF race wheel! Really nice! Now I wish

I've just tried moving the linearity bar from about 40% (-----+-------) to
about 20% (---+---------) and the difference was immediate. It felt like I
had a lot more control of the car, particularly in slow corners. I also
tried moving it full left (+------------) but that may take a while to get
used to, since the car is wobbling all over the place.
I'm gonna stick with 20% for now. I also turned off the low-speed
sterring-hack thingy (for getting out of the pits) since I thought it might
be affecting my driving in the slow corners at the ring.
Going well so far, just need some tranquilizers or pot or something to stop
me tensing up in the second half of the lap at the ring ;) Hehe

I know exactly what you mean!
When I know that I am on a good lap, I start to get a *seriously* raised
pulse. By the time I'm rounding the bend before the long straight, the
adrenaline levels in my body would probably constitute a medical emergency!
This program should come with a health warning :-)

<[email hidden]> writes
As a follow-up to my original post, my real, main worry was my ability
to brake in a straight line. I was already having some problems under
braking with my old settings where the car would just veer off
unexpectedly during really hard braking from say top gear down to 2nd,
and I had put this down to 'not enough deadzone' and 'too much
linearity' even though I had it 2/3rds non-linear. So the last thing
that I thought would be ideal was to go full linear with no deadzone.
How wrong I was. If anything my braking in a straight line has become
much improved. I can only put this down to the immediacy of corrections
that I can make if I start to notice the front end drifting off the old
straight and narrow. Still not perfect, but more consistent. :)
One other thing, the Ring looks like becoming my nemesis more so than
ever. On all other tracks with my new settings it has been relatively
easy to improve my PBs. Not so at the Ring. Despite how hard I push in
an attempt to eek out that extra bit of speed through and out of the
corners, my times always end up about the same - 2 seconds off of my
current PB and 15 seconds off of my old joystick time. You know that
feeling when you have had what was definitely a storming lap and you
breath a sigh of relief as you finally make it back to the s/f line,
saying to yourself, 'That's gotta be quicker. I was really on the
limit!'. Only to see the same old time pop up on the pitboard.
Aaargghh!!
After that I think to myself, 'But I can't go any faster. Surely I'm
taking each corner as quickly as I can. It certainly feels that way.'
However, I know that's not true because, what feels like a lap on the
edge, would have been a bit of a cruise for the same laptime with my
joystick and that's plain weird.
And whilst I'm at it, one thing that really, really bugs me at the Ring
is how easy the car spins out if you put even the smallest piece of your
back wheel on the grass. I checked a replay after such an incident and
the merest fraction of the edge of the outside rear tyre made contact
and around I went. Grrrrr!
Anyway, it's now the Ring all the way for me as I don't like to upload a
new GPLrank until all tracks have been improved upon over the previous
upload. Unfortunately that just leaves this one remaining track. Looks
like I'm in for a looonnnggg night. :)

Wow! You mean I finally did do some good here on RAS?
Holy Moly what will happen next? The 2nd coming?...lol
Now, to be honest I thought everybody set there wheels up this way!
These setups were given to me over 2yrs ago by my 'pal' aka mentor
Tim Wheatley [but dont tell him ..ok??.<g>] Oops Alison too! Sorry
my sweet classy race lady!! :-)
For me putting the linear full left & use dxinput dropped my laptimes
2secs a track in only days, 2yrs ago.. Then I using a 14:1-12:1 steer
lock but then came along my Tsw2 wheel! The clean smooth' action
made the 14:1-12:1 steer'lock feel sloppy as "H". So I started using
12:1-10:1 steer lock and my laptimes dropped again 2-3seconds a
track.. More at Spa!!
Finally I got my Ferrari FF wheel & Wow!! Big differnce & now I
could really 'fine tune' my wheel via' core.ini, game controller apps
& more!! So now I can easily use 8:1-10:1 steer lock without any
wheel scrubs & I turn my wheel at Rouen's hairpin less then 3"s to
the right to get all the way around that turn!! I just love it!
For me, less is more! Also it is much easier to try many of the hot
shoes setups i.e. Huttu, Stewart, Pryden, Cote, Moses, RolandE
Wheatley & so on this way! I'm no hotshoe or close [my gplrank
show this..lol] but I can atleast give them a "tussle" for a few laps
online!! :-) Anyway this is what I do.. *fwiw!!*
Cheers Thom_j.

Hoo bloody Ray!! Didn't take that long after all. 8:18.80, only .2
better, but who cares? I don't. :)
All managed from end of long straight near end of lap. Was probably
about a second down on previous best and then made it all up from there.

Fwiw Peter, The Ring, The Ring, The Ring.. phew I avoided this track
like the plague for years.. I just started running it with a vengeance last
month and I was doing a horrible 10:43!! Yea' I know it stinks! But in
3weeks and about 30 laps later I'm down to a 9:02+.. I hope to be in
the 8:35+range in a month.. I did say "hope"?...:-)
The glassy slippery feeling I found was [a] setup & [b] taking turns in
a higher gear rather then a lower gear but try to keep a mental note to
be atleast within the 6k+rpm range. Anyway this is the way I did it &
shooting for the 8+minute range next...lol! Hope this helps a bit...

Hmm... I don't know whether I want to mess with setups yet. I've kinda got
used to the feel of the default setups.
Every time i've tried somone else's setups i've found them a total
undriveable nightmare. Even Alison Hines x-file setups, which are supposed
to be for novice drivers, they just wobble from side to side when putting
the power down, and swerve off line under braking. Same thing with Gregger
Huttus setups. (no offense to those two excellent drivers) They all seemed
to be biassed to turn more, and slide more easily, and that just doesn't
work for me.
I'll see how I get on with the 20% linearity before changing anything else.
Ok, time for a new PB at the ring :)

I've got a theory about this. Occasionally when hotlapping at the ring,
when I'm a bit tried, my mind wanders and my concentration goes, and then
when I finally get my focus back, I realize i've done 50 or so perfect
corners on 'auto-pilot'. Also the driving while I haven't been focussed is
really smooth, natural and fast.
So what I need is something to distract my concentration for a whole 8
minutes. Any ideas?

Ok, which one(s) do you want?
8:18.80 - current best, but a bit ragged at times.
8:19.01 - just been beaten, but was run with old wheel settings.
8:23.11 - felt superb, neat, tidy and quick. Why this time then?
Plus I've got some decently quick joystick laps in the 8:05 range.
The choice is yours. :)

You still stuck in the 8:30s Eldred? Me too. I did a lovely lap there a
few days ago. I was convinced it was going to be a new PB, it felt really
fast, but then I saw the pit board and it was 8:33, a second slower than my
best. Bloody frustrating >:|
...but I think the key to going faster is to attack the course and use more
throttle, to drive round, and not to drift round.
Have you tried setting the steering to more linear, and turning off the
drivers arms, and turning off the low speed steering hack? Also try racing
with headphones on.

I also think that you need to attack to get good time there.
Recently, I've had a lap. At the 1/2 point I knew I was doing
excellent lap, so I decided to make sure that I finish it.
Nice clean smooth driving with no mistakes on the second half
of the lap. Crash in the last corner. Damn! I've never crashed
there before. I've looked at the lap in Replay Analyzer. I was
more than 5 seconds faster than my PB at 50% mark. At 75% mark
it was just a little over 2 second of gap (I lost more than 3
seconds without making mistakes). In the last corner just before
I crashed I was almost a second slower than PB.

The funny thing is, an 8:22 lap doesn't feel much faster than 8:32. Also to
get that time I did somewhere between 5 and 10 laps every day for 4 or 5
days. That's got to make a big difference, having done lots of recent laps.
I'm just downloading your ring Ferrari lap from your website, so I'll see if

Oh I forgot to tell that, I turned the hack off a couple of days ago
and I feel it helps a lot at the ring. The constant switch between
slower and faster corners on the Ring are not really suited for using
the hack. I turn it back on for track like Rouen, Mexico and Monaco
though, easier to take the hairpins then.
Headphones are quite usefull since you don't get disturbed by sounds
from the outside. I also get drawn into a(ny) game much more when I
wear headphones.
Real fun is when I turn the lights out, put on my 3d glasses and wear
my headphones. It's like -being there- :)

The depressing thing is, 8:22 is only 2% faster than 8:32, so it's not
really surprising it doesn't feel any faster.

things you could improve on, but if you've done an 8:32 which is obviously
six seconds faster, you may have already fixed them. Either way this is
meant to be constructive-
First, braking into turn one, I see a huge column of thick smoke coming from
your brakes. I'm sure you've read this before but if the brakes are locked
you are losing braking effeciency and risking a spin. The tyres shouldn't
stop rotating and there shouldn't be any smoke. Gentlty squeeze the brakes.
Having said that, you only locked the brakes a few times really on the rest
of the lap.
Second, up-shifts. You're not getting the best acceleration from your
Ferrari because you are shifting too short of the red-line. The red-line is
11,000 on the Ferrari, and a normal shift should be 10,500 to 10,800.
Between 10,000 and 10,800 the car is still accelerating really well. If you
shift at 10,000, you end up with too low revs in the next gear, which
compromises the cars acceleration. Try to get used to shifting 500+ rpm
higher.
Those are just a few little technical details, the main problem I can see
with your Ring lap is that you don't have really *intimate* track knowledge.
By that I mean your driving style generally seems quite tentative, like you
don't know how fast you should be taking a lot of the corners. Looking at
your other times on GPLRank, there's no way you are a slow driver, most of
your times are every bit as good as mine, so you must a better driver than
that lap shows. There's lots of corners you're not getting the power down
properly out of, and bits where you should be flat out but aren't.
The only way to fix this is to do a lot of laps in a short space of time, so
the laps count. What you gain in terms of track knowledge from driving a
lap soon fades, so you have to do lots of laps together over a week or two.
Also, you could try driving the Cooper. The Ferrari can be a bit wobbly
under braking from time to time, whereas the Cooper is really well behaved.
You should find you are more confident in the Cooper and can attack the
track more. Then when you feel you're pushing the Cooper to it's limits and
getting consistent with it, switch back to the Ferrari and you should beat
your PB.
You're probably thinking I've got a cheek to speak badly of your driving
when I was only 2 seconds faster than you on GPLRank this time last week ;)
I've uploaded my PB lap here -
http://www.sbdev.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/replay.zip if you want to take a look.
Don't worry about the time, and forget it's in a Lotus, just look at the
general 'approach', the amount of throttle I use, particularly in the middle
and exit of corners. I think seeing it should convince you how much better
you need to learn the track to improve.
Good luck :)
Simon.

It's supposed to be threshold braking. If the tires don't lock when I brake,
the car doesn't seem to slow down.
To tell you the truth, I shift purely by sound. When it sounds like the engine
is revving too high, I shift. I couldn't tell you *where*(number-wise) I
shift, because I don't know what the markings on the tach represent. I
couldn't find the gauges explained clearly enough anywhere, and don't even look
at them...
Well, I know where the track goes, meaning I know what the next turn is. But
you're correct, I don't know how fast to take the corners. The only thing I
can know for sure is when it's too fast, because at that point I'm sliding
backwards towards something.
But the thing is, I *already* feel like I'm on the limit(just barely staying on
the track). It's hard for me to see how I can take a particular corner FASTER
than I am now...
We'll see. I've run 15 laps over a weekend before, with no improvement.

is a little higher :) I don't know which Ferrari you've got installed, but
with the one I have, the red-line stops on the figure "11" if you rev the
engine in neutral. In the Ferrari I shift just before this, on about 10.8,
whereas you shift about on the "10". It's not a big deal, but it will mean
you don't quite have optimum acceleration.
Actually, just on sound, what i've done with my copy of GPL is found an
engine sound I liked and copied it for all the cars, so they all sound the
same. I then edited each individual engine sound to change the pitch for
each car so that when they were all at max revs they all produce the same
pitch (or note). Now, whatever car I'm in, I always shift on the same
pitch. This makes switching between cars extremely easy, plus I think it's
helped my driving in general.
On braking, a few months ago, I used to leave a massive trail of black smoke
into every braking zone :) particularly in long braking zones, like before
lesmo 1 and parabolica at Monza. Now I use less brake pedal, brake later
and spin way less. Obviously my Monza time is only 0.01 better than yours
so I'm not claiming to be a Monza expert, but I think most drivers would
advise you to work on this. You'd probably be amazed at how deep into
parabolica a real top driver (Huttu etc) can brake, plus they brake in a
curve and not a straight line, and it's impossible to do these things if the
brakes are locked.
15 laps in a weekend is a lot, you're right. You probably don't have the
free time to bo doing that same amount per day over a whole week, especially
when there's no guarantee it'd help. You need to convince your brain that
you should be going quicker.
Before Christmas I was stuck on 8:48. I also couldn't see how it was
possible to go faster, since it was a really nice clean lap in the Lotus. I
did loads of laps trying to beat it, to the point of total frustration. I
had just about given up and decided to do one last flying lap. I screwed up
my last lap on the first turn!! I was so totally pi**ed off that I drove
the rest of the lap in a minor rage, attacking every corner, not giving a
damn whether I crashed or not. Half way through the lap I noticed how much
faster than usual I was driving, and when I finished the lap it was about
8:50 (IIRC) with about 15 seconds of time lost in spins.
The next day I was able to drive in the same agressive manner, do a clean
lap and got to 8:35, and then 8:32 a few days after that.
Since you seem to be stuck, I think you should try something like this. Do
some laps but not going for a PB, just forget the time, don't worry if you
crash 50 times, just try to take every single corner a lot more agressively
(and quicker) than you usually do. Just go into every corner 15-20% faster
and see if the cars comes out the other end. I've seen from your 8:38 that
you know how to avoid spins and when to correct the car, so I'm convinved
you have the skill to control the car at higher speeds.
:)

Thanks. I'm using the standard cockpit. I never knew what the markings were.
Even if I did, I didn't know where I was *supposed* to shift anyway.
Yeah, I've seen those laps - amazing. When I tried to brake in the same spot,
I slid right off the track. I've had other people tell me I need to brake
earlier, though...

Oh, I know that I *should* be going quicker...<g>
Yeah, I've had the same thing happen. For the longest time, my PB was a lap
that included a spin. I couldn't even get close on a clean lap...
Hehe..."see if the car comes out the other end..." I like that<g>.

You're too old, Eldred :-) The fast guys are 16-25 years old. Those of us
older than 25 probably have had too many scary experiences in real life
driving at public roads to challenge the limits of GPL.
I studied your fast laps about a year ago. I was the one stating that you
drove as you actually had payed for the car.
You drive too cleanly to be really fast :-)
I'll admit that I haven't studied your laps since then, but from your
postings, I'm led to believe that you still are struggling with some simple
facts: Using the whole track improves lap times. You should have a slight
understeer at the entry of almost every turn (because of the high slip
angles in GPL, grip is better when turning the wheel slightly more than what
seems visually sensible).
If driving the Lotus: Accelerate in 2nd or 3rd, even though 1st or 2nd feels
more natural. Higher gears reduces wheelspin, which in he long run improves
lap times.
Good corner exits are *far* more important than braking late. Braking late
is easy. Having good corner exits are hard. You may gain a 10th of a second
by braking late. But you'll probably have a slide, reducing exit speed. The
lack of exit speed will result in lower speed at the following straight.
This lack of speed lasts for a longer period of time than the time gained by
late braking. Naturally, the longer the straights, or the more straights,
the bigger is the time loss by too late braking.
Besides: If your tires are squealing while braking in a straight line,
you're braking too hard. Braking distance will be shortened if you manage to
brake at the edge of squealing (I''l admint that my tires squeals as well;
it's a psychological thing: If the tires don't squeal, I think I can brake
some more).
